4x4 stuck up snowden

And there was me going to say well done for doing it... :D

...and BTW, you need to improve your English - their not there, off not of - etc. - and FYI the RAF Rescue service is not funded exclusively by the Welsh!

Among a whole host of other mistakes, God should really be spelt with a capital letter too. ;) (unless you are not refering to the God)

Who called in the forum police! :o

Give it a rest. :dull:

Even the name of the mountain is misspelt in the Topic heading (and that's the English version  )

Why cycle up 'n' down what would have happened if one of your team came of and god forbid broken a limb!, a send out the rescue team and risk there lives just so that you can have a jolly, absolute silliness and the cost of helicopter would have come from the pockets of us people who live in the principality bad enough in summer but in winter , someone's got too much time on there handsemoticon-0112-wondering.gifemoticon-0112-wondering.gif

Someone's got too much time on their hands....:giggle:

Now, now children!

Play nicely or you'll be sent to your rooms :dull:

Sorry!! but hearing what Edinburgh university intends to charge English students while scottish and other european undergraduates are free or cheaper has upset my ordinarily equable temperament and made me anti devolved legislation. I should keep my current anti celt prejudices out of my posts.

Well said seboni121, here in N Yorks we have the idiots in the winter on the moors ill prepared and needing to be rescued when things go wrong, and the idiots in the summer falling down cliffs, floating out to sea on their inflatables, or getting cut off by the tide because they don't know about or can't read tide tables. Even the best laid plans turn to **** it's called sod's law, "If anything can go wrong, it will" or words to that effect.

I should keep my current anti celt prejudices out of my posts.
Don't suppose you know a guy called Hadrian do you. :D

Back to subject........we have the same bunch of mostly visiting lemmings who seem to gravitate towards Ben Nevis. As regards the  Frontera  just make the guy pay for what it costs to bring down.........NOT by driving.

Maybe we should let them (Scotland & Wales) be independent then we wouldn't have to keep giving them money somebody told me recently. I don't know enough to comment. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Back on topic.....use the Clarkson method...explosives - blow it up! & charge the guy for the cleanup emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

RAF - paid for by the taxpayer & they would see such a rescue as practice. Generally folk who don't go up mountains know FA about it. Yes there are idiots who aren't prepared but speak to the rescue teams, pilots & winch-men & they don't begrudge rescuing folk who know what they are doing & have an accident. The majority of them go into the mountains for leisure too.

Happy to confirm this statement.

Additional points:-

1) For "RAF" read "RAF and RN".

2) Other than the few mountain rescue teams who are specifically "RAF MR", MR teams are civiiian volunteers funded by charitable donations, and who volunteer to do this at least in part (quote, possibly paraphrased, from Hamish MacInnes. If you don't know who he is, please find out before replying) "because someone else was always prepared to be there for us when we went out".

If you don't like this attitude, please move to the USA where they will charge you to let you onto the hills, and then charge you like a herd of elephants if you get into trouble.

Just to close this off, the car is now down. It was brought down by the Mountain Railway. According to reports it took them about 3 hours to get it to the rail line, load it onto a flat bed and then get it down. I don't know how far it was from the line but I suspect that was the challenging bit. Check out the BBC News website for details.

Glad they got it down.

I understand why he did it, I'd love to drive up a mountain one day that would be a great challenge. But Snowdon... I don't think he could have found a busier mountain if he had tried, should have found somewhere a little less touristy and that way if things went wrong as then normally do with offroading and Vauxhalls leave it there until either

a-) he decides to fix it and drive it down

b-) until it errodes/rusts away

I think it's a cool idea to drive up a mountain, you lot need to chill out a bit.

Fine if there's a right of way for vehicles up it- rare. If not - selfish and stupid . We had a rash of idiots in 4x4s on the drovers road above my village a few years ago- result ?3' deep ruts and everybody elses enjoyment of the countryside ruined.Cool? I dont think so.

I am a very keen off road driver. As with a lot of things the stupid minority spoil it for the rest. However there is no way a bunch of 4x4s caused 3' deep ruts. This would mean they had 6' diameter tyres! If the ruts were 3' it was either a tractor, horses, walkers or running water. Chances are the ruts were closer to 18".

I was going to say the same.

Done a lot of responsible offroading myself and seen the damage idiots do.

But deep ruts are usualy from tractors or motorbikes. Even on a Land Rover Defender after about 12" or so the axle starts to belly out. Unless they have huge challenge style tyres, then you may get up to a maximum of 18".

Depends on the soil & angle. An 18" rut can easily get washed out by running water after rain & end up much deeper.

3 foot ruts must be a tractor surely? I've never seen anything like that.

I understand that the "car(??)" is now sitting in the Railway's yard awaiting the owner's collection, together with a LARGE bill.

Question to the mountain biker; which track did you use, as some up Snowdon are only footpaths and therefore illegal to use on a bike?

And to those that made racial slurs against us Welsh, even in jest; they aren't always funny and can upset some people. Even I thought some of you went too far, and I've got a thick skin.

If that is me I'm sorry no racial slur was intended. My (off topic) thoughts are political and not intended to make any point about the world's most enthusiastic singers, rugby players and romantics they are tough and doughty people and the mountain rescue guys-some of whom I've met are on a par with the RNLI as volunteer heroes.

Does that mean some are fine to cycle on?

If you like downhill mountain biking check out the Nevis Ranges Centre in Scotland.

They have a cable car to the top, equipped with secure hangers for bikes, and 3 or 4 purpose made tracks to come down on which look challenging, to say the least!

Nevis Range website

Now you're talking, all the fun of the descent without the hard work of the ascent.

Gets my vote!

If they are designated as a Bridleway, then yes.

Cycles cannot use footpaths.

I only ride legally there, Graham - up/down the Llanberis BW in fact - on Snowdon there is a voluntary restriction on cycling during summer between 10am and 5pm which is complied with by responsible cyclists.

http://lyxus.net/ihva - which also details the other Snowdon BW's

Riding on public footpaths however is not illegal, although it may be an act of tresspass if you do not have the landowners permission.

Happy to clear this up for you
