VRS Burning oil

Featured Replies

My dear Seb, it is not that everybody slates you because "you have an opinion" as you say. It is the fact that in the past (thank God you switched brands, I really feel sorry for the Polo GTI owners in the VAG forum you must be attending now!) you literally spammed every vRS thread anybody ever started, and some not vRS related ones also just to say "hey, dont forget stay away from a vRS", stating things which you had never experienced yourself, only repeating what you've heard from others, with an astonishing certainty as if you had owned endless 1.4 vRSs in 30 years. Up to now, I have not found an explanation for such fanatism...

Let me put it this way: we may be 3 people discussing own experiences of the same car. One's is good, the other's is bad and the 3rd one's is medium. Now somebody just hears our conversation and for his own reasons decides to go with the story of the bad one, and is starting to repeat what the actual guy with the bad car was saying to everybody that he meets. Now there are 2 people saying the car is bad although one of them has not filled this car with fuel once... Multiply that by how information typically circulates around and you got it...

  • I will ask about the oil breather system before they do any major mechanical works, I will post tomorrow afternoon when I am back from the dealer.

  • Actually there was an amusing (and shocking for me!) confession some time ago when I was repeatedly asking how come you post so much cr@p about the vRS if you've never had one? At least us, we're shar

Arnt diesels the modern ones less polluting than petrol ? Not sure tho ;)

On a different note,my vRs is confirmed as a week 42 build.I have taken the precaution of opting for a 5 year warranty and I look forward to 50k miles and 5 years of happy motoring.

Welcome to the club - my one will probably be on the same boat as yours, Week 42 as well! and with 5 years warranty and 3 years servicing B)

*hides in shame as not owning the car yet and mercilessly spamming the thread*

Strangely enough I've not put down the polo

I have to agree i am concerned that emissions will be effected by oil usage, I even have it recorded on the file for my car at Mitchells that on a satisfactory resolution to the oil burning issue the CAT should be replaced by SUK.

In the big scheme of things though, my fabia doing less than 4000 miles a year compared to a 16 litre V8 Scania doing 6 miles per gallon, am I really going to kill the planet?

I take nothing personal on a forum, after all it is a place for all to have there say, be that right or wrong.

For the record, I will keep this car for a long time, after three years it will have about 10K on the clock, I have a Yeti that is 14 months old with 57K on it and I will have that for another 22 months, so mileage isn't an issue to sell. SUK will replace the engine when I show the breather fix did not work.

In the US diesel cars(not pick-ups/commercials etc)are almost unknown but, because of the far higher average mileages covered, they would be snapped-up by average buyers if available.

I believed that this non-availability of diesels on the US market was because of them not being able to pass more strict emission tests, where obviously petrol cars can pass.

My Dad has a VW Passat wagon in Phoenix, it is diesel PD with auto box, he bought it in 2009 for $24,000 and was offered $18,000 in 2011 for it, to try and get a tdi golf is nigh on impossible, even longer waiting list than a Yeti!

Here it is in Monument valley Utah.

Seems like I have missed a lot during holiday time! Will be getting mine back tomorrow with new engine fitted. After oil breather system changed it was still using 0.562l/1000km which was more than the 0.5l limit thankfully, as it was real close to being just under the limit and not getting new engine.

As regards getting the cat tested, they tested it when it came in and it was fine apparantly, so it seems mine wasnt really combusting oil during normal running, only when off throttle. Will see how it goes with oil usage while running in. Any suggestions?

Suggestions for what?

Removed pcv valve and running a breather so far no blue clouds of smoke like before.

Been like this for a week further testing will be needed.

I have tried giving it the conditions as to when i was getting clouds of blue smoke.

Havent been able to test if oil consumption dropped will be starting this today.

Anyone that gets blue smoke! does supercharger clutch tick lyk buggery i.e 5/6 times before engaging then puff of blue smoke???

Sounds like you have supercharger clutch problem. Engine expects more air but since it is getting none due to clutch not engaging it overfuels and when it finally gets it smoking occurs. Take one plug out and see how it looks and you will know.

What pcv have you put a breather on dude?? Big or small one??

Small one on right hand side of engine

Careful dude I had a breather filter on that side and when held at constant throttle it squirted oil out of there like nobody's buisness. I've blocked mine off and run the other side to a catch can.

Do you get a lot of oil in the catch can?

I had a call from the dealer today after the weighing process. The crankcase breather is being fitted tomorrow then i have to run the car, If that doesn't work then the next step is a bottom end rebuild. Anybody know what this entails? Is this just piston rings or something more... Also some sort of ECU update is required too.

Not really dude but it does breath extremely heavy in terms of vapour.

Just a subjective observation but since my vRS was serviced and filled with Shell Helix 5w/30 it seems to have used less oil i.e. around 1/2 litre over 2k miles. When it had Castrol Edge 5w/30 it used more. Odd.

Maybe Helix has higher Sheer Stress factor?

They will probably do the piston rings if it hasnt been done already, or may go for whole sub-assembly like they did on mine. I got told it wasnt possible to order the short block and pistons/crank etc so I had a whole new engine. ECU update as far as I know is to help with excess boost on overrun to reduce high crankcase pressure and help assist the new breather system. Could be wrong though...

Jabozuma... I was looking for suggestions on running it in :)

I had the new breather system fitted and they also re mapped the car or updated the software, I like the way the car drives now as it gets up the gears a bit quicker and feels much torquier than before.

I just need to get it on a good run now to see how much oil is used, going away next week so it will be parked up all week.

As for running in PaddyVRS, a mate of mine has one and he drove it hard from new on a variety of roads, his car has used 1.5 litres in 7,000 miles.
