Should I be running my vrs on V Power diesel?

Featured Replies

I get very slight improved fuel economy on v power and also the engine sounds noticeably quieter

I'm a loooong time BP ultimate user.

I've tried V power (for 2 tanks, to let the ECU adapt).. I didn't find it as smooth as BP.

Thing is, at 1st, I found Ultimate a bit odd, almost too smooth, 2nd gear felt drama-less and it took me a little while to work out that was because it was so much smoother, and after that moment I didn't wanna use anything but.

I'm sure people will disagree with me, but I'm convinced it helps with motorway manoeuvres as well!.. just a teeny bit more eager, but it inspires more confidence.

And of course, the cleaning additives they put in keep it smoother for longer. I've run 3 tanks of plain fuel over 3 years and each time I've been itching to get back onto Ultimate due to noticing the rougher acceleration. You get used to the crispness.

+1

I think the only difference is a marginally higher cetaine [sp?] rating and has some detergents to clean the inners of your engine, but someone can correct me here if I'm wrong.

Hate to be the one to do this, but.... You're wrong  , but also partially right

It is a mix of normal, petroleum based 'refined' diesel, some detergents & additives, but most importantly (perhaps) is the inclusion of synthetic diesel in the mix, derived from Gas-To-Liquid (GTL) technology. It's this syntehic bit that increases the cetane rating, also reducing the smoke, makes it smoother, and possibly alters the performance of the engine. Possibly.

Pretty sure BP ultimate does not include GTL in their fuel.

I just use normal diesel from shell and fill up with v power maybe once every 2 months, I find it does run that bit smoother with v power but no gains in power !

There is a bp garage en route to my folks house, guess I may try this next time I need to fill up. See if it cuts the smoke down a bit and runs smoother.

Don't forget it'll take a few miles before you notice and difference, and then it'll take a few more for the ECU to really optimize it!

The car is the daily hack. I put the more expensive fuel in the 2 seater sportscar

Both those have extra "urge" running better fuel.

In fact I ran my previous vRS on BP Ultimate for around a dozen tankfuls but didn't notice any difference in performance or economy either when I switched to it or when I went back to ordinary supermarket fuel.

Standard supermarket fuel here. Put premium in now and then, and it gets a bottle of fuel treatment at each service. Seems ok at almost 119k...

Only ever use Shell ( mainly because of their drivers club card get reward vouchers for fuel :p )

Standard fuel for me so far, next tankful will have about 4-500ml of 2 stroke oil added too :)

Only ever use regular Shell, with a dose of Millers every now and then for mine.

I tried V-Power for 3 tanks and it seemed to make no difference.

Vpower card holder have run vpower diesel over about 60,000....yes 60,000 miles...apart from the fact i will now be flying somewhere for free (thank you airmiles) i wouldnt say it has given me an extra 10 hp :D!!

although for motorway and town driving it does seem smoother which is nice.

i wouldnt say quieter....its hard to get louder than a bacon lettuce tomato vrs diesel ;-) unless of course you own a tractor.

Standard diesel should be fine with it (as in, it's not "required"). Shell's V-Power has extra detergents, and a corrosion inhibitor in it. It might have a cetane-booster in it too - I'm not sure (there's no mention of it in Shell's literature).

I have read on another forum, that the standard 'Fuel Save' actually has more Cetane that V-Power. However V-Power get it's performance by the different additives/detergents it uses.
