Struggling to justify keeping the Fabia...

Featured Replies

I'm really struggling here to justify keeping my Fabia mkI.

Not sure why I'm posting here, probably just because it's on my mind. :'(

Problem is, I really like it. It's a fantastic car.

Probably the last ever registered mkI VRS, plus an SE with serious modification and low milage. So I couldn't replace it if I wanted to.

But with the new toy it's just not getting used much at all.

I took it home from work for one evening just to give it a run. Only time it's been used in a month!

Oh what to do...

Please please please don't sell it.....at least not until I can afford to buy it off you anyway!

Possibly a daft question, but, Could you not garage the skoda for a while until (if) you get sick of the GTR you have something reliable and diesel to go back to?

It's too much of a special car to sell!

I'm no suggesting you will get sick of the GTR or that's it's unreliable btw :)

If you do sell, please don't sell it to some youngster with a bank loan not really knowing what they're about to purchase.

Got point made above though about storing it. It's quite a special car being the last one etc.

Serious question, I`v wondered this before, with a new much quicker, much more "special" car, does the fabia still make you grin like a kid when you prod the accelerator and feel the surge of torque pull you along? Is flying past (at the legal limit of course) much more expensive supposedly quicker cars still enjoyable?

I`v always thought, to make it worth getting another car for me, it`d have to be more than just another "Hot hatch", but then I think what will the fabia be doing? Will I still enjoy it when I have a M3 or something to drive too, will it loose its charm and just become a modded shopping trolley. :'(

I'll run it around for you if you want, keep it running ;)

Yes I could and that was always the plan.

Right now the VRS lives in the depot at work, so it's stored under cover with high security. But the problem is that every day I go to work I see it sitting there... and it just doesn't seem fair to the vehicle to leave it collecting dust.

I guess it's the classic phrase you see on for sale adverts "For sale due to lack of use, time to let someone else enjoy it".

It really is a great car. But it seems a waste. Maybe I'm being to sentimental about it...

Yes, the Fabia is still a blast and very enjoyable. It'll still beat most things out there and do so while looking like a fairly standard Fabia, which is one of the things I like about it. It's subtle. With the new car it can get a bit waring with everyone staring at you all the time. And nobody wants to play, they all just give up.

Also being a more low tech performance car, there is more of a raw feeling that I like in the Fabia. You actually feel like you have the grab hold and wring the best out of it, which was why I got it instead of a mkII Fabia VRS with the DSG that made driving feel a bit boring. It's more fun at slower speed than the other car, because that only comes alive when you are giving it the beans. The problem is they sit next to each other and I struggle not to take the Nissan for the weekend. So the Fabia just waits... while wanting to play. (while being much better value for a public road)

Maybe I should think about storing it out of sight so I don't keep looking at it and feeling sorry for it.

Just use it once a month until the weather improves next year.

Noted. You're very kind. ;)

I would keep it, but I know you have your new toy to drive around in. As good as the Fabia is, you can't really compare it with a GTR.

Your Fabia is probably the nicest one on here IMO, and you have spent a fair amount on it! - just think carefully if you do decide to put her up for sale....

I'm lucky enough to be able to drive my Dad's 1997 Aston V8 Coupe whenever he takes it out for a run. In my eyes it really is special as only 101 were made, and every panel was hand beaten, engine built by one man etc. It's obviously completely different from my Fabia, massive road presence, thumping 5.3L V8 and it makes you 'tingle'.

Even after driving that though, I still get in my little Skoda and feel good, it does everything I would want a daily driver to do, and then I can take it to a track day and have some fun! Thus 5 years down the line, I still couldn't replace it with something else.

AS has been said before..........if you still like so much then keep it in good nick/store properly and use as a special occasion car....it will only go up in value..........keep it almost as the "toy" .......keep your driving skills honest with it....great alternative/counterpoint to the GTR!!! B)

Right, I'm gonna swim against the current here....

I personally think that you feel the way you do because you've obviously reached a point where, sub consciously at least, you've realised your probably not really gonna ever use it again. Every time you look at it you think...

"Oh man, :( look at it sitting there, all un used.. it's so sad"...

Where as you could have been thinking

"Oh man, :) there's my lil Furby, that's gonna be awesome when I get back into more regular use of it"..

Truth is, it's a spotless and special (as far as a Fabia can be special) example of the breed.... And it's the kind of thing that if you put it in to full on storage will give you endless fun and pride in the future, and if kept as it is, will be something epicly awesome in say 10 - 15 years. Mines 7 years old, and is nothing special.. but when yours hits 10 the model will have been out of production for 12 years, it'll start to look like something different on the road.. Kinda like when you see an absolutely perfect mk3 Golf GTI now, The reduction in numbers, and tat that's still about makes them look so pretty, especially the last ones in that inky metallic blue.

Maybe that's the answer? Perhaps having it sat there, ready to go is the issue? What's the situation with putting it into full on deep sleep? So you don't feel like your keeping a drivable car.. but more preserving it as a gleaming example to be enjoyed at a later date.. if ya catch my drift? That way it won't be so much "someone else should enjoy it" but "Everyone can enjoy it in the future as a good example".. If you sell it on it'll get used, and then it won't be as special..

HA! I talked myself around! lol! :giggle:

In another direction, i would have kept every car i've had as they were all special to me. But i had to sell up to be able to afford the next one, granted i've never spent that much money modifying and usually made most of my money back. But my next car i'd love an edition 30 golf and i'll plan on keeping that a verry long time, if i'm able to get a company car for a cheap daily run around.

My opinion is if your in a position to keep hold of it then do it! The car is obviously very special to you and no one else will ever feel like that. At the end of the day if anything like another recession hit and something had to give it's going to be the GTR, how would you feel if that went and there was no VRS to fall back on?

I'm just thinking of worst case scenario here but it might make you think twice before giving up one, if not the best VRS on here! ;)

If you feel like this then sell it- what's the point in having a car and not driving it?

Or sell it for parts and then sell the unmodified car with low milage but this is a ball ache!

Sell the GTR  with fuel prices only ever going in one direction, the Fabia VRS has to be the cleverest warm hatch EVER.

Good thought that man. By this time next year anything thats fun running on petrol is gonna drain the bank balance.

Seems a bit stupid to have two cheap cars

Why not sell both and get a quality car Say a Lexus, then you can really enjoy the Skoda Fabia vrs zooming past you

Or is one a car you own and the other a company reps car

If so then sell the SKODA to someone who can enjoy it , Then when you no longer have a comany car, dream of what you could of had

as you drive your zetec fiesta about

LOL I'd hardly call Richard's SE a cheap car. It's cost him more than I'm planning on putting down as a deposit on a house.... :o

Thanks for the comments all.

And National's rather amusing post. :giggle:

The VRS is not due for it's first MOT until March, so I'm thinking to pack it away for the winter and bring it out when the MOT is due.

Any (helpful) suggestions about laying a car up for five months would be handy. :)

At least keeping it packed away over the winters will keep it in good condition.

Maybe it could become a car you just MOT on 1st April, tax for 6 months, wrap up at the end of September? :) I would just leave it on axle stands, keep tyres inflated, obviously SORN it, stick a cover over it if in a working depot. No worries.

To add to the above post.....put on a constant charge using one of these...they are the best!... I have one for my car

http://www.ctekchargers.co.uk/ctek-xs3600.php

Or just remove the battery. B)

If I had somewhere to keep mine then it would be repainted and stored.

(although I freely admit it's far from as impressive as yours)

I have more vehicles than I can drive too and I'm really enjoying

the MX5 at the moment. I'd like to dust down the vRS in 10 years

after most of them are gone and get back out there in it.

As yours is the newest one out there you should deffo keep and store

particularly as you have somewhere to keep it.

If you sell I'm coming to swap rear discs with you :p

How much if you do sell it ?

How much if you do sell it ?

I'd like to think 12k, but everyone will tell me that's bonkers and it's only worth about 10k.

Warwick's was similar, being a Stage3 Jabbasport one, but a red 56 plate with a bit less spent on it. Don't know price of course, but it was advertised for 9.2k.

When you think I've spent more than twice that it seems daft to sell if I don't need to. Modifying cars eh? money pit! :D

That's why I've decided to mothball it for winters from now on.

And as had been pointed out, if I did sell... I could never find another like it.

Not even another like it to modify because of the odd 09 plate, milage and condition...

It's booked in to be detailed next week, then it'll be going undercover once it's immaculate again.

I've been in your exact situation with my VRS for almost 18 months now - And I still have the VRS! I used the VRS daily originally - then replaced it with a VW Touran. The VRS then sat over last winter which did it no good as the door seals started leaking and the interior went mouldy. So replaced the battery (as i didnt put it on a trickle charger) and had to replace the whole interior. But it still puts a smile on my face - so its staying around this year again. It passed its MOT a month or so ago. It wouldnt get back all the money I spent on it - so I may as well get the benefit of it! I'm not upto 3 cars - all are MOT'd taxed and insured! expensive habit! (Drinking and smoking would be cheaper!)

Booked in to be detailed again?!....
