Winter Tyres & Maxidot.

Featured Replies

Ladies & Gents.

Just need a bit of advice before I put the winter tyres on.

I've found a setting in Maxidot for Winter tyres. I haven't activated it as yet as I haven't put them on but what precisely does it do?

Also as my "stock" wheels are 17" Pallas ones, it has two speed boxes, +5 mph & - 5mph.

Which box do I tick? So my speedo registers correctly for the 16" ones that I'm about to put on. :wonder:

Its just a speed reminder bing, think its if your winters are lower speed rating you can set a limit as a reminder :giggle:

and generally the wheel circumference is the same (or not far off) between 16 and 17 as the tyre profile is bigger 55 on 16 but 45 on 17 which gives almost the same rolling circumference

There are two things here, the first is a speed warning setting which can be set to warn you when you exceed a certain speed and which could be used for winter wheels if one felt it necessary (I have mine set to 85mph in case I become overly enthusiastic). The other is an adjustment for the rolling circumference should non standard wheel/tyre combinations be used and on mine this can be set in increments up to a maximum of +5% or minimum of -5%. I believe the adjustment is then used for all the speed and distance related stuff on the car i.e. speedo, odometer etc (which would make sense) although some posts have alleged that this is not true.

So useless then if you have the correct tyres

Its only a speed warning. It doesnt affect the accuracy of the speedo. Its all explained in the owners manual.

Weird thing - I was going to post a question on this same subject today.. :smirk:

Its just a speed warning then? Nothing else?

My Goodyear winters are V rated which equates to 149mph max.. so for me there isn't really a need to set the warning in that I'm never going to get up to that speed? Am I right?

149mph... in winter?

I do have to wonder why they make tyres with those ratings on for Winter use...

.. for days like today, when the temp is 13+ degrees, and you might be on the autobahn?

Do you visit the autobahn much? especially during winter?

How did you manage to get ultragrip 2s, I couldn't get ultragrip 7s as they have been superseded by ultragrip 8s so went for tinse? When were they manufactured?

Apparently so. Not many have actaully read them it would seem!

I think the majority of people say " I've read the Handbook " when in fact that don't even know where the handbook is.

Disclaimer:- I have a Handbook emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

They also make winter tyres with a 270km/h rating emoticon-0100-smile.gif

Driving in Germany is different, I used to have a set that was rated up to 210km/h and hated the bling everytime I went past that speed.

Therefore my second set was V rated (up to 240) and I didnt have that much problems with the bing anymore emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

That was with my VRS TDI, nowadays I still get an occasional bling with V rated winter tyres emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif

(but not that often, because even in Germany those speeds arent easily achievable anymore)

Yeah - it's a fair point - tyre makers will want to make one tyre for both markets...

Actually yes.

Not going this year, but I've done several ski trips in the past driving across european motorways in cold weather.. plus my job takes me to europe a lot. Not using the car much for those trips now but in the past I have many times, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland etc. I currently have a project in Poland but that's just a little to far for driving.

Sorry Jonno - mine are Ultragrip Performance 2's.

Goodyear also do a tyre called Ultragrip 7 and now Ultragrip 8 which are only in sizes up to 16" according to their web site.

Mine are 18"s.

It still amazes me how many people think that the Winter tyres +/-5mph on Maxidot is an adjustment! This comes up every winter doesn't it?

Try it - all it does is go boing and a Winter Tyres warning message shows up in Maxidot if you exceed the speed you set it to.

Incredibly you are right, I thought it might have been something useful. I only use the normal speed warning in the MFD so never noticed.

Yep - about as useful as a chocolate tea pot!

According to the speed rating of my winter tyres I should set it at 130mph. I have more things to worry about than my Maxidot boinging away at me if I am doing 130mph on snow or ice emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Funny, we were just discussing this yesterday, weren't we Andy? I'd no idea -- then again I haven't got a handbook with mine. I obtained the car over 3 years ago as a bereavement sale, and I think it was the owners son-in-law that was selling it. He didn't know where the handbook was, even though all other books, including service book, were there. He did promise to forward it on if he ever found it, but I'm still waiting...........

I've got a set of 15 inch steels and winters for my Elegance, but not putting them on until the temperature drops significantly. (I've even got a set of genuine Skoda wheel trims -- wheels and trims have come off an Octavia Classic). Very interested to see what difference they make -- these will be my first experience of winter tyres.

Mike

I have my winter tyres on now. I think the first thing you will notice is that the steering feels a lot more imprecise and the turn-in slower. If you can avoid fidgety steering though then it's fine. I also find that with the lighter 16" wheels the handling over rough roads is immeasurably better.

Well I thought it was to allow the computer to compensate for differing tyre/wheel sizes. That's why I asked about it!

So will my speedo read over or under the actual speed when the 16" wheels are fitted?

Because I suspect that my speedo was calibrated for 17" wheels.

If the tyre size is as Skoda approves, ie 205/55 16, 225/45 17 or 225/40 18, there shouldnt be too much difference.

All within 1 or maybe 2 percent (also depending on thread depth).
