WRC Light pod (again....)

Featured Replies

I know I have mentioned this in the past but......

Having recently moved from Birmingham/Bromsgrove area to the countryside where the street lighting is $h!te to say the least I have realised just how poor the OEM lights are on the vRS....

I am currently running uprated H4 100/160w (Headlights) and H3 100w (Fogs) front lights and this is still not really up to scratch.

I am now seriously toying (again) with the idea of getting a WRC style carbon fibre lighting pod with four 8" driving/spot lamps.

Your thoughts/opinions etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Steve :)

why not try and get oe projector xenon lamps?

These light pods are agains the lighting construction and use regulations for use on public roads, the regulations specify a minimum distance between the lights and the maximum number of lights.

Are they really that much better though??

What are my options? Has anyone else done anything like this??

Steve

don't know if they are better, but can;t be much worse than oe halogens.

as a side note recently got some +80% and have to say they are no real improvement on my previous +50% ones :( . Hopefully gonna try some Philips +100% ones soon

Have tried the Philips night breakers +100% and didn't rate them and they kept blowing after only 2-3 months use.

Anyone know if there is a H4 H.I.D kit available?

I remember someone a few years ago sticking some spot lights on their Octy...

How does this look?

For the sake of £90 it might be worth a punt....

Steve

You want between 4 - 5K

The higher frequency becomes increasely blue, which is completely flat when reflecting of green - making judging distance hard.

Cheaper still, how about these:ebay link

Don't put xenons in your headlights you will blind everybody coming other way, am not a critic of them as i had them in my last 2 volvos and my 406, but they were H7 bulbs

I put them in my octy and yeah they were bright but they just blinded everybody coming other way, what about putting them in your foglights then they have to run through a projector and it just takes abit of the glare off them thats what i was going to do but not got round to it yet

Ste,

I have used a few bulbs in mine. Std oe ones were ok but a bit dull. could see better with them than the Ring blue off road things I had in.

Ive had some none descript make really bright ones in that blew pritty fast but were fairly bright.

now I have the Phillips Extreem bulbs in mine and OMG they are really good. They get used every day on both levels and the light is so clear and easy to judge. On main beam they are like driving in day #light I find, really good and have lasted 5 + months already getting used every day.

highly reccomended.

The local cops round here will fine you for having your fog lights on when it's not foggy

the hid kits i have used have all been a 1000% upgrade over standard and uprated bulbs.

you can get ® rated bulbs that apprently have a patch to reduce glare.

It's interesting to note that the first link (the £80 set) clearly states that they are for show and off road (non public road) use.

Does that mean that you stand a high chance of being pulled and/or they maybe won't pass and MOT?

Plus the temp/colour is rubbish for road use too.

i think they state that as there is a whole issue about the legality of fitting retrofit hid kits to your car.

the colour temp 8000k is too high and too blue, this is more likely to get you pulled i would have thought than anything. The further up the light scale the less useable light you get. I have run 4300k in my cars when fitted and this is as near to OE xennon light output as possible, and gives the best possible light without being yellow. (a crips white with just a slight tint)

i run a 8k hid kit on mine with the height adjuster set to 1 instead of 0 and have no problems what so ever

8k is a lot more blue than 4k and more likely to get you noticed i would assume, also there is less useable light, but if you like it

Couple of points.

As said the fitting of a lamp pod would be illegal, because the centre two lights are too close together. That contaveens the C & U Regs. It would also probably annoy your insurance company a lot. Plus those pods are heavy once fitted to the bonnet and would make it very difficult to open it and work under it. That is why rally cars make them removable.

From the New Year the fitment of HID lamps is included in the MOT. If you do not have automatic levelling and headlight washers fitted you will fail.

I have and highly recommend aftermarket HID xenon, only 4300k.I use that for 3 years, the light is very bright white, aimed them very low.Nothing compares with it,not even OEM HID headlight wich are a bit weak in my opinion. Before fitting the aftermarket HID I was looking for the OEM ones, and I tried 2 cars with OEM xenons and I was a bit dissapointed.

4300k temp has the higher value of lumens ,about 3.200 ,6000k HID has 2.800 lumens and the higher temp goes the power is weaker.

HID, will fail MOT's from Jan I think :( so my set is going to have to come out. Must have headlight washers and auto-levelling.

Steve

Don't hide behind the, I can't see at night excuss. You just want a lamp pod stuck on the front of your car so you can go down Sufen init. :giggle:

I hate the lights on the RS. Had Philips extreme. But blew in less than a year.

When I have a few things out of the way going to get HIDs.

I seem to remember Shifty fitted one of these lamp pods to the front of his Fabia, might be worth asking him if he had any problems with the local police?

Incorrect i believe, That's only on new cars when they come as standard. As has been perviously said there are cars that have them already without washers they'll continue to be ok. It's the same as when seatbelts came out, the cars previous to that date that didn't have them fitted were deemed still to be road legal (and still are!)
