Could injectors be worn

Featured Replies

Over the last month I have only been getting around 380 miles to a tank normally 450 to 480, car has had full service, serviced every 10,000, and I do tend to pull on the taxi rank and keep it idling nearly all the time, like I have done since I have had the car 55 plate, 3.5 years and 181,000 miles

So with this sudden drop in mpg could the injectors need servicing or the fuel pump.

Car still pulls like a train when driving, and routine has not changed

It does not smoke except for when I floor it to overtake and the turbo kicks in

Change in weather ?

sent from my dribble bus using ketchup !

Its not been cold enough up here yet, not had any frost, even in the midst of last years snow storms when the temp was minus 14 or lower, it has never been that bad

Every filter was changed last week, have done 1500 miles since, fuel cons was heavy before the service and still is???????????

I did manage to get it to 430 miles but that was doing 140 mile airport runs

When I went on holiday in October I managed 625 before filling, did 480 to Plymouth and ran around the area

If you idle a lot and are getting poor MPG, I'd suggest you get the EGR and inlet manifold cleaned out.

These fill up with an oily sludge that can be really bad for performance and economy.

Wouldn't hurt to get the inter-cooler and all the other pipework and possibly even the turbo cleaned out, plus the oil breather pipe cleaned out too.

Next would be clean air filter (you say you've already done it), a double dose of millers (or another engine cleaner additive) and an Italian tune up.

If it's still bad after that I'd look at replacing the MAF sensor.

+1, I'd be willing to put money on it!

Lots of idling will cause the build up of soot / sludge over time. Clouds of black smoke on hard acceleration supports this.

Check out this thread, slightly different engine but same symptoms...

Hi

It could also be that the tyre pressures are too low or like we had with out VRS a while ago, the tracking was done at the dealers and suddenly the miles per tank dropped from 480 to 400. Got the tracking checked and done again at the same dealers and it was still 400.

I took the car to a specialist in Edinburgh (CLCM) and its now 480 - 500 miles per tank and that is mostly in town driving.

You could also try putting some diesel injector cleaner in and give it a good run up the motorway to see if that clears the injctors a bit.

Cheers

Dave

Give Forte diesel treatment a bash, I run it every 10k after a service. I'm also a taxi driver, weekend past I only got 450 out of a full tank.

I'm actually considering a remap for mines, for better mpg.

I bunged in a full bottle of millers diesel clean in this afternoon, even though the instructions where 50 mil at a time, and took it for a run up to Edinburgh, and tonight it will get a good run to Newcastle airport, hopefully that should clean it out a bit

Any suggestions for cleaning EGR and manifold without dismantling???

Can I get a blanking plate for mine and would I need to get the EGR dialed out once done???

I have noticed that when the diesel changes to the winter mix I get less per gallon, but not as much as you experience.

That much Millers in one go should be good for the octane rating!!!!

Newcastle Airport? That's a no bad hire..... Into some of that ;-)

The EGR and inlet have to come off to do it properly and that much sludge going into the engine would be really bad for it anyway.

A good garage, you'd be able to have it done in a couple of hours.

A blanking plate will cause an EGR fault to come on (at least on the 2.0 and I think also the newer 1.9), although I have seen smaller holed gaskets which would reduce the flow. I've heard mixed reports on these working well or the CEL still coming on.

I guess you could blank it out, then get the CEL mapped out by a friendly mapper.

Can you imagine pushing this through the engine:

Well thats me back a 140 mile round trip, 70 miles there in just over an hour B) A68 very quiet at night

Lets not forget we are now on Winter diesel which seems every year to cause posts on here to crop up regarding reduced MPG.

Winter derv causes a small drop, but not 20%. It's not that cold that we have to have it 20% diluted.

By removing, cleaning it and then refitting will it throw up any dash lights or is it quite straight forward?? I'm a novice at engine bits but I have a friendly spannar man up the road who could do it

Before I left for the airport last night I put £20 in as the fuel light came on just before passing the garage, so £20 gets me 14.65 litres at 140.9 at **** Turpin's,(at least he had the decency to wear a mask) gave it another good shot of Millers, done 170 miles so far on that fuel, light will be back on soon, so will put another 20 in and see how it goes on local runs

I am on winter tyres and they are at the correct pressure, 32psi all round so they might have a bearing on the consumption

If you take it off, clean, refit and clean the gaskets, you could end up needing to reset the position sensor for the flap (I believe). This should be easily done with VCDS.

If you have VCDS or somebody close who does then I'd say go for it.

Just don't forget to get the gaskets for the manifold to engine, the EGR and the pipe that comes into the side of the EGR.

This is innacurate, brim the tank, drive around and then brim again, then cauculate the MPG from that.

I always run my car full to 1/4 then refuel, normally £60/70. I find it a nightmare nipping to the garage to stick in £20 only to return a few hours later, people always say the weight of the fuel is like carrying an extra person, but you then don't have the nightmare of worrying about fuel levels. Keep it full

For winter tyres, you could try putting the tyre pressures up 2PSI above those you'd use for summer tyres and see if it helps.

I seem to remember a tyre manufacturer suggesting this for it's winter tyres.

IMHO it's still likely to be the EGR.

Skoda does too. The Owner''s Manual states that the inflation pressures for winter tyres are 20kPa (0.2bar) higher than those for summer tyres. 0.2bar = 2.9psi.

Did you get the EGR off, or put the pressures up or has this now been 'fixed'?
