MK1 vRS - Stage 2 R-Tech Tuned

Featured Replies

I forgot to add that I recently removed the tow bar that was on when I bought the car.  I was never going to use it and now it's gone, the rear looks a lot better.  It was a relatively simple job to do and I'm sure it'll be a bit faster now without that great lump of metal stuck out back.😁

It's not a massive difference but the block hanging down below the bumper has really being bugging me for a while.  Here's a couple of photos for comparison.

Nice looking car, red ones are the best 😀

I'd recommend a black spoiler to compliment the red and black theme.

I agree, the red is a good colour and a lot easier to keep clean than my old black one.

As for the spoiler, I keep toying with the idea of the WRC version.  I don't know if it'd be a step too far but if I'm going for the full chav look, maybe it's the next logical step? The other thing to consider is that finding one might prove to be difficult as they're not exactly common.

I'll have a think about the black spoiler as it hadn't crossed mind until you mentioned it.

👍

Mine sort of happened by accident. The paint on the spoiler had faded. I tried to polish it back to life but it was too far gone so I had a rummage in the garage and found a tin of matt black paint. Figured I had nothing to lose so sprayed it up, put it back on and rather liked it

Sometimes the best things come out of an error or necessity.  I'll mull the black spoiler over for a bit - do you have any other photos?

Not brilliant angles, but all I've got on the computer at the mo.

It was that last photo that spurred me onto looking for another Mk1.  After I sold my blue MK2 I missed having a vRS so looked through the threads and saw yours.  I then got a bee in my bonnet about getting a red MK1.  In theory I can blame you when the Mrs wonders why I'm spending money on the car again. 😁

No problem, I accept full responsibility 🤣

Did a nice simple job today.

The nearside indicator lamp had gone cloudy due to water getting in.  Rather than faff around trying to fix it, I bought an ebay special for £10.  It was so easy to sort but it's the little things that make a difference.

Yep, got one on order. Hopefully it'll be here sometime this week.👍

Another update.

For some reason, the car developed a crack in the windscreen.  I have no idea how as it's been sat on the drive for a couple of weeks so it's a bit of a mystery.  Anyway, a call to Autoglass sorted it out and the car is now sporting a very shiny windscreen.  It's a bit of a novelty looking our through a brand new windscreen in a 17 year old car. 😁

Today's job was to change the pollen filter and swap over the scuttle panel that I got from DeanVRS20VT.

All went well and the replacement panel looks a lot better with the blanking plates and rubber seal in place.  Towards the end I briefly considered the de-wipered look on the front as it looked very streamlined.😁

I'm sure I won't notice a difference in the cabin with the new pollen filter but at least it's done for a couple of years now.

Looks soooooo much better!

Not to make you spend more money 😄, but have you considered the MK4 Golf aero wiper arms? They look a lot neater and much easier process of changing blades due to using a single spindle for the connection.

I have considered it. Do you have it on either of your cars?

Ahem, *Cough* ^^

Both cars have them.

Just a small update.

The original aerial had seen better days so I bought an eBay special for less than £5.  It's neatened things up a bit and surprisingly for the money, it actually works!  I don't really need the AM/FM aerial as the car has a digital head unit but it's good to know that it still picks up a signal if needed  I've attached a couple of photos of the new and old so you can see why I wanted to replace the original.

After owning the car for a good few months, I decided to take the engine cover off for the first time.  It wasn't pretty under there and by the looks of it, hadn't been given too much attention over the years in terms of keeping it clean.  I was wondering where the misting of oil on the right hand side of the engine was coming from and found a small split in the Creations Motorsport breather hose.  This might be the cause of the misting, I'll have to see if it clears up when the new one turns up this week.

I also discovered that there's been a lot of gunk building up in the pipes which took a bit of clearing out.  I wasn't sure if a catch can would be a good idea or not for the future seeing as this is quite a lot of build up.

I've put it all back together for now as I need the car for work next week and will mull over the catch can idea.

Also, thanks to DeanVRS20VT for some behind the scenes advice on this.👍

Another day, another mod.

Years ago when I had my Mk1 from new, I added a Polo cup holder below the stereo and found it a really useful mod.

Now that I have the Mk1 again, I've been using the cup holder near the gearstick but I keep knocking the cup when changing gear or trying to use the handbrake.  I decided to do the same mod but was surprised to see how much they cost nowadays.  I guess I'm going back to when I bought one new for £34 direct from VW but at the time of typing this the cheapest on ebay is £80 used.

Luckily for me I can't spell and when searching for one, I misspelled Seat Arosa and found one for less than half that price as the seller made the same error.  It arrived today and I've done a preliminary fit.  This time I moved the stereo down and after a fair bit of whittling and trimming of the external mouldings on the cup holder, it all went in.  I can't quite get the trim on to go round the stereo yet as it stops the holders retracting fully but I ran out of light.  I'll have another look tomorrow.

I tried this and unfortunately I ended up giving up. Tried all the ways I could think of, I even trimmed it down, tried making the rear lug go into the back off the dash, and finally I cut it off to make it fit...

Then one day I got it to fit perfectly (on top of the radio) and I put a nice big McDonalds drink in the holder and it tipped up. So be careful haha! As there is nothing to hold the holders in place due to the openness of the dash. It looks like it tipped and hit the center vents, but of course by that time the drink had already decided to leave. 🤣 Oh, and like you said, I too kept hitting my hand on the cup holders when driving, so that annoyed me to no end.

These actually sit under my bed currently so they’re safe as I never know if I’d use them again.

I now use the cup in the center part and it works very well, and then decided to go double din unit to use up the space.

That's fine, it all adds to the story.

I'll see how I go with the holders as I may change my mind and put it back to standard in a few days.

I'll bear in mind what you said and watch out for things tipping over.

👍

After a bit more fiddling and cutting of knuckles, I managed to rehouse everything again including the stereo surround.

The replacement breather hose arrived today from Creations Motorsport.  It was a five minute job to replace and hopefully it'll make the car a bit happier even though it doesn't look any different.

I've put a few photos on to compare new to old and to show where it was split.

I finally got round to cleaning the car.  It's not had much attention for a good month or so and was desperately in need of a good clean.  It's had the two bucket method and a dose of Gyeon Q2M WetCoat, which is my latest discovery.  It's really easy to use and leaves the car with a lovely wet look.  Another bonus is that the car is really easy to dry afterwards.
