Black Betty has arrived

Featured Replies

After much polava yesterday with the dealers I finally picked her up last night. Shes a black vRS with mats, tempo red interior, arm rest, cruise control, black wheels and flappy paddle thingys

There was a problem coding the retro fit cruise so that isnt working yet, its booked in next week to get the issue resolved. The weather hasnt helped much either as its been chicking it down ever since I got handed the keys. Also wont see her in daylight till the weekend, but first impression on the looks is that she maybe a bit too black, but I suppose thats my own fault for having impatientitis and not being able to wait 3 months longer for my factory ordered red estate.

The car feels solid, Im very impressed with the instrument cluster, very crisp and adds to the feel of quality inside. Not booted her yet, had her up to 4k revs a few times using the flappie things to change down a cog or 2 or 3, and what a noise. If the low down acceleration is anything to go by that is one rapid little car. Also, on a 30 mile trip to work this morning I averaged 44.1mpg, which Im very pleased with, seeing its a new engine and had no cruise control.

Overall, she reminds me of my 2 Mk1 vRS's, all about the thrill of the drive. The smile factors definately there, as is the vRS magic. I just cant wait till shes got a few more miles on the clock so I can open her up fully.

One thing I noticed in the Maxidot was Oil Temperature, is there an optimum temperature I should wait till the engine reaches before hard use? No doubt I'll be back on with more questions as I notice new things, and I'll get plenty of pics up at the weekend, when I see daylight. :giggle:

Oh, and did I mention the noise of the engine, ooooooaft

Look forward to seeing the pictures.

I was wondering the same about oil temp - seems to settle about 80 on mine, so I wait till it hits that before giving it any serious beans.

Glad you got it at last. Look forward to seeing some pics.

glad you're happy, when the oil temp starts showing a figure its warm enough to muller, and I'd honestly drive it as normal from day one, general consensus has been the ones like mine (I was red lining it at 14 miles!) use less oil and bed in better, to much "babying" and you can not get it bedding in properly, and end up needing new pistons and rings! I don't mean ring its neck all the time, just drive it normally, full throttle when needed, revs when needed....

oh, and keep a good check on your oil levels in the first few thousand miles ;)

have fun!

edit: and get some pictures up! :)

What no pictures!!!!????? :)

Glad its put a smile on your face.

Congratulations on your new motor, another gangster for the road!

Seriously though...I've had mine for just over a year now, and despite comments from the dealers that you should just drive it normally from the minute you get it, no need to bed in etc. etc., I chose to take the sensible approach and it's done me no harm at all.

Simply wait until the engine temperature reaches 'normal' before giving it any welly ,and you can't go too far wrong. Oil temperature on mine seems to hover around 90 degrees once fully warmed up.

Hope that helps :)

Get the oil hot - 80 - 90 is best, I always let mine get hot before allowing the beans out! I built my revs up slowly over a period of months, rather than 3000rpm for 1000 miles etc. Spread the rev range for 1000 miles and build it up. I would rag it from new as don't think its clever but hey ho

Get the Kodak out !!

It maybe a figment of his imagination :)

I'll be round shortly for viewing and a wee spin! Probably when it stops :rain::D

B) No probs Bryan, anytime, and Im looking forward to the rain stopping too.

Forgot to mention my thoughts on the DSG. At first, especially when reversing, me and my daughter were nearly through the windscreen a few times :giggle: . Have learned though that you have to be very gentle with the peddles when manouvering in tight spaces and reversing. After a few embarrasments its now a doddle to do. I also find myself pottering around alot slower in town as well, I think cause Im not constantly changing up and down gear so dont feel the need to speed up to get into 4th etc, the DSG does it all for you and I find it nice and relaxing just to cruise around knowing theres a can of whoop ass under the bonnet if the need arises :D . I have one question though, I stopped on a hill last night with the gearbox in D and expected it to roll either backward or edge forward when I took my foot of the brake pedal but it stayed still, is this something to do with the hill hold control thing Ive read about but never actually asked what it does?

The MDI interface is a joy to behold too, using my iPod just now and Ive figured it out now how to navigate my way through. Getting the USB cable from the dealers as well as Im fitting a hard disk of some sort to it, well that was the plan but with the iPod working so well Im starting to ask myself if I need to. Oh, another question. When I leave my iPod plugged into the MDI cable at overnight, its not going to drain the car battery in any way is it, I assume the iPod will just power off automatically when the stereo or car engine is turned off.

Also glad I chose the tempo red seats, not saw them in daylight yet, but they certainly add a bit of colour to the cabin. The cabin sort of takes me back to the eighties hot hatches like the XR2s and Pug GTis as its got the basic, stripped out feel to it, which IMO suits hot hatches nicely.

Also :D:D:D , overtook for the first time this morning (once my Oil Temp was in the 80's) using the kickdown function, I'm not saying it scared me but I had to lift off the go pedal to slow down a bit at the other end ;)

Ive had Celicas, MR2's, Furby n Octy vRS's, R19 16v's, fast(ish) Rovers, Lexuses, and prob a few others that I cant remember, but this car beats them all.

What a car B)

Yes, this is the Hill Hold Control. When you're on an inclined road and you release the brake, the car will stay still for 2 seconds in order to facilitate the transition of your foot from the brake to the gas pedal without the car rolling back/forwards. (Of course 2 seconds are a huge time for such a move!). After 2 seconds It will start to roll as normal. It's a very handy feature I'd say.

This is probably also, the reason that you experienced this strange behaviour when going backwards. If the HHC is engaged, (it gets engaged from quite small angles) you need to very very gently push the gas pedal until the HHC function is off (2 seconds) and then operate as normal. Otherwise, by applying more throttle you are trying to overcome the hold function, and when this comes off you found yourself shooted back. Takes 2-3 tries, but then you'll see that no road will ever be a problem to start from again...

Good fun, isn't it, blair? ;) (But what is "the kickdown function", and what is a Fabia VRS SE?)

Anyway, I was wondering this morning re the HHC why it doesn't work when the car is pointing downhill.

I don't know if it's a function or a capability. He refers to the case when you slam the gas pedal and the DSG instantly shifts down 3 gears, and you're off... I'd say it's a capability rather than a function but considering the kickdown sensor on the very end of the gas pedal's working path, It could also be a "function".

Anyway, the good thing is its there!!

PS. Don't tell me you haven't tried this yet?

Jesus this is the worst thread ever.

'oooo look at me i have a new car'

well lets see it then Blair.

@ Newbie: Well yeah, I have noticed that the gears drop a few cogs if you floor it... but as far as I know every automatic gearbox ever made does that.

As an aside, I really need to play a bit more with the paddles. I've cosseted myself too much in full auto mode for the last few days.

Yes, I didn't mean DSG-specific, but Generic Semi Auto box-specific function. It's just been given this name that's all.

You should use the paddles more. They do a great job reminding you what car you're driving, it's a much more pleasant experience. The Drive-Auto mode makes me sleep, and makes me forget why I chose this car. Nowdays, I only use it in heavy traffic.

the paddles are great, I use them on all the "twisties" in manual :) fantastic to blip it down through the cogs on approach to a corner when braking, then having the instant response you want when accelerating out the other side, then being able to change up at 6k (the power just drops between 6-7k if you check the graph)

I also use to ovveride when overtaking on A-roads  again, I like the instant throttle response, rather than waiting for the kickdown :)

Yip, the most fun you can have with your clothes on

I just meant when the gearbox drops down 2 or 3 gears to give you a sudden burst of ooomph, like other automatics.

The Fabia vRS SE was the limited edition race blue Mk1 vRS that came with the leather, cruise, autochagnger etc as standard. I suppose I should really update my cars.

Oh, and photographs you say? :giggle:

Saturday morning folks I'm afraid :(
