Wow that looks bad! Luck you're alright.

I've seen one on here from a while ago where a stone was caught between the calliper and the inside of the rim, scoring it. It broke clean in two, and looked like a split rim.

That looks a lot more rough though and doesn't look like the same thing.

Are you sure this was caused by the alloy fracturing? Such an accident would have put severe stress on that wheel and hence could have been initiated otherwise destroying the wheel in the process? e.g. a blowout as suggested?

If you look at the photos there is severe scoring on both parts of the wheel which would suggest that the wheel was in one piece when the scoring took place. If the wheel had fractured prior to the accident it would have split apart and the scoring from the accident would not be consistent across the wheel. Easily checked by matching the parts of the wheel and the scoring. I suspect that the fracturing was as a result of the accident.

Looks like kerb or pothole damage.

Glad your ok mate. Could you raise it with Skoda UK as a safety issue? The car's 4-5 years old so surely you wouldn't expect anything like that to happen..

I see your tire is still attached and inflated. Would this rule out pot hole damage? as you'd expect the tire to puncture and possibly have a dent in the wheel??

Personally I think something breaking in the steering linkage may have caused this, from the "suddenly veered off" comment - but we're not going to know for definite unless a specialist examines the car.
