Winter tyres to summer tyres

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I'm just wondering when it is recommended to change back to summer tyres?

Thanks

When temperatures are consistently above 5 C, so if you haven't already, do it now :)

Thanks mate. Will change them tomorrow.

That reminds me, better change mine! Thanks!

Did mine about a month ago

did mine today, we got above 7 degrees today. Mind you it has been hovering around zero or just above the last few weeks at night

was 20 degrees here today!!

They must be like driving on jelly at the recent temps !!

I did mine ...em... oh wait "summer" all year round...

I love it how people (not necessarily the OP) preach about winter tyres are the 'must have' in winter but then leave them on when it's well above the temperature for summer tyres..... Bizarre....

The problem is, we are still in March. Iv seen snow in April and May before after having a warm March. I know your post wasn't directed at me, but just imagine how dull I would feel if the weather went very cold just after I take my winter tyres off. Remember the recent weather is very warm for the time of year.

I must be mad but somehow I managed another winter driving on summer tyres without any issues.

A Summer tyre isn't going to make you crash, just 'cos its cold'. It is 'warmer' more than cold at this time of year. If we do get freak weather, just spend 30mins swapping them back. I have had my summers on since the end of Feb now.

Oh FFS..

Evo ran some tests of winters in warmer weather quite recently - a decent winter tyre in warmer weather will still grip better than any cheapo "summer" brand.

Plus I had ice on the car this morning...

:p

I dont know why people are making such a big deal about this. I only wanted to know when it is recommended to change back to summer tyres. If poeple dont want to use winter tyres, thats thier choice. Personally as I live in the middle of the country where gritters dont visit, i felt that it was safer to have winter tyres.

Oh and im not thick, I know im not going to suddenly crash if I put my summer tyres back on and the weather turns cold, but this hot weather is the freak weather.

No gritter campaign for road tax reduction! Its the same where I come from but they do dump a small pile every mile or 10..... simply not good enough why should a person living in a town generally get a better road surface and also gritted boooooooo.

Great read this thread now lol run M&S on all our lease vehicles all year round no problems with grip at -20 or +40 degrees

Just taken my Dunlop Wintersport 4Ds off my Scout.

I was impressed by the improvement in grip on ice, snow and in mud and there was no noticeable increase in noise. The handling was a bit more vague, but I don't exactly drive the car on the limit in bad weather.

They wore to 7mm from 9mm in 5 months and 4,000 miles which is more than I expected - suggests I'll only get 12k out of them if they should be changed at 3mm.

On taking the decision whether to remove winter tyres, or not, you can play with the stats to your heart's content @

Mine were swapped on the 16th of this month having been in place since Dec 1st. I work on the basis that when the temp. creeps steadily towards double figures and there's no sign of a cold snap in the offing then I swap them over. I store the winters in my garage so should the Baltic air suddenly head westwards I can have the winters back on in an hour if needs be.

Pain in the neck, back and elsewhere getting the winters ready for storage however. Takes forever picking all the small stones/grit out of the sipes with the blade of a screwdriver.

Iv been on Matador Nordica 225/40/18. First 50 miles were a nightmare, but after that they were great. Drove them on untreated roads in -4, muddy fields in a show in November and up to 20c recently. They have been great, obviously not as responsive as my sc3 but damn good in my opinion. Wear has also been excellent, will be good for next winter.

Bonkers weather.

Frozen windscreen and 2C this morning

Drove home at 20C - NO noticable difference in grip though.

May need to swap to summers at lunchtime then winters back on when I get home.

Same here, and set off at 0 degrees and drove home at 18 degrees.. Swapped the summer tyres of yesterday

You won't believe this. My tyre guy didn't have time to change my tyres on Monday. I drove to Durham on Monday for a meeting today and when I got to my car at 5.00pm there was an inch of snow on it. I was so glad to have my winter tyres on.

I'm holding on to my winter tyres at the minute due to this freaky weather - plus i don't want to get caught out when i go down to the Black Forest next monday - who have had snow yesterday...

Four inches of snow in Chesterfield today and 'up to the door handles' in the High Peak.

I think I've just about managed with the dizzy low of 5c and a bit of sleet this morning.

I won't be rushing for the jack just yet to swap them back.
