Front door "spy" camera

Featured Replies

I have just re-vanished my front door and removed the old "spy" hole (which has previously been varnished over by a former owner).

As I already have a CCTV system around the house, I am thinking about adding a camera to replace the old spy hole, such as one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-Door-Eye-Spy-Hole-Security-CCTV-Camera-1-4-CCD-PAL-Color-Surveilance-18mm-9V?item=160728330455

and coupling it up with a small display, such as: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-3-5-TFT-LCD-Car-Rearview-Reverse-Monitor-car-camera-UK-fast-shipping-/110784158706

I was going to split the video feed signal and send it up to my DVR unit, and use my doorbell as a trigger event (instead of motion), so that when the doorbell is pressed the DVR starts recording, thus capturing the face of the person ringing my front door bell.

I realise that at night without an IR source it might not be great, but there is already a camera with a 30m IR range for the front path, so I am hoping some of the light from that might spill down to the front door....

Any thoughts?

It isn't that bad here... I was just thinking of a cheap techie solution to the spy hole.

Could also be handy to see if delivery companies actually attempt to deliver things or not!

Seems like a good idea :)

The IR from the camera should be alright.

I have a couple of spare channels on my DVR so I might as well put them to good use :-)

Not I just need to fabricate a return switch/mechanism so I can use my old Victorian door pull rather than the modern electric door bell push button.

Surely the DVR can be setup to recognise certain 'hot zones' and trigger recordings if these are 'violated'?

After all, what if the burglar delivery man decided to knock instead of ringing?

True, the DVR can do zones.... but I figured that looking down a garden path might trigger rather a lot from people on the road, but fair point. Maybe I could double up with the door dell (I fancy testing out some new features of the DVR...)

Or I can could add my big brass knocker into the trigger circuit too...... ooohhhh, errrr!

What if a guest leans on the fireplace??, does the bookcase revolve sending them down a slide to the batcave?

Shhh, that only happens when you lean against the fireplace in the guest bedoom..... I'll have to remember to work that into my next round of DIY - a secret sliding tunnel to the garage. Now that could make going to work fun!

try a place called Globetek.

i got all 6 CCTV cams from them. i have domes and mini bullets all with 50m IR. as you say, if you have cams out front near yout door the IRs my give enough light to make night viewing from the spy cam better. i love CCTV, had it for years as its just another toy in my eyes. Get ya Dvr to upload image snaps per trigger to a cyber cloud and email too, that way, if you get burgled and they steal your DVR you still have hard evadence.

Cool - thanks, I have used cctvdirect in the past. I have 4 external cameras and 2 more external dome type.

cctv is a nice toy for me, although I did realise it might make the house harder to sell!

I would be gutted if they stole my dvr unit.... I really should secure it, and make sure the final camera is near to it, so the last image uploaded to the internet is that of the toerags face :-)

Should that be Globeteck? ;)

Hmmmmm!

As you were trying to be helpful in mentioning a place to get CCTV items from, I don't think it helps when Google can't even find the shop from your spelling!

I guess it was just a mistake but it doesn't help any other person who'd like to benefit from your suggestion does it?

shame my post was deleted.

sorry john999boy if my spelling was not up to your standards. we cant all be perfect.

Maybe you mean www.gtecsecurity.co.uk ?

no i mean Globeteck. im sorry they are not on google for some reason.

It's a shame people keep digging when they're in a hole! :swear:

As I mentioned earlier, people will not be able to find who you meant as you didn't spell it correctly - it wasn't the spelling police who pounced but the helpful police.

Now that you have got it right but state for some reason that Google can't find it!

Anyway, here's what I see when I do a search:-

Wrong spelling - nothing to do with cctv found

Google-Globetek.jpg

Right spelling - click here to go direct to the site

Google-Globeteck.jpg

Hopefully this can be the end of it?

People. Chillax :D

Just checked, searching for "Globetek cctv" (as any sensible person would) then it brings up the company at the top of the results
