Try the inside of the screen in the middle, just by your interior mirror.

I got a result on the fake memory cards - raised a return with Ebay just to annoy the seller after they tried to blackmail me to change feedback in exchange for a partial refund. They asked for photos

  • Can you actually see where you are going?!?!?!

  • OK, so if you remember, I ordered a cheap 720p dashcam from China, I saw several reviews that praised its video clarity, even at night, and with GPS included for £31 I couldnt really go wrong. Sadly,

Is the best place at the top of the windscreen or the bottom where it meets the dash??

At the top of the screen I have a 'sunscreen' strip thingy to stop glare.

Cut a section out.

As I may be PXing it in the next 2/3 years, I'd rather not go taking a craft knife to it. :(

If I do it, it will look messy and other bits still on the screen may start to peel off.

Good clip Jayneyyyy.  :)

I got mine today and the car charger doesn't work!! :( no light comes on when plugged in! Comes on when you plug the USB cable though. The destructions are a bit weird though!! Plus the default language is Spanish!!!!

I found the Russian word for language then scrolled the menu until I found that word! Maybe you can try the same?

Good idea batman (women)  :)  I'll give that a bash :)

I have the SmartWitness installed in my A4 (soon to be transferred to the vRS) not the best quality, but good enough to see detail, and scare people into backing down when they are at fault and you point at it, like a couple of occasions in the past.

  • 1 month later...

I picked up a new cheap (<£40), Full HD dashcam and fitted it yesterday, first impressions are "not bad at all", decent video image in most light conditions, although bright sunlight seems to be effecting resolution slightly, I have trouble reading the number plates of oncoming cars when the camera is in bright light and the car plate is in partial shadow. With camera and oncoming car in the same lighting, the plates are easily read.

I am going to wait a few days to see if the picture gets any better - as my last camera improved after a few days usage; and to make sure the camera is stable - it locked up for no apparent reason about 6 hours after I fitted it, so I dont have a night time video to post. Stability problems have been reported, but supposedly fixed with a firmware update, so I need to check and see if this unit came with the new firmware.

It doesnt have GPS, but it does save in standard avi format, making it easier to view the videos, and supposedly has seamless file saves. (Not been able to confirm that yet, none of my trips have been long enough to span 2 files).

Re the cheapo "X3000" I reviewed about 6 months ago, about 2 months ago it suddenly started randomly taking 20-40 seconds to save a file - making it extremely unuseful if there is an incident. (I didnt notice for a while, because I dont review the files every week - only when an incident occurs).

Ok.

I needed to replace the X3000 but am broke, so thought I'd try the DR32 which has received decent reviews and only costs about £60 (I got the price wrong above I was thinking of something else I had ordered).

The unit is a lot smaller than the X3000, having only one (Full HD) camera lens - 66x60x33mm - and in a dullish black plastic case, so not too noticeable. It comes with both a suction and a 3M sticky pad mount and can be used either way up (180 degree flip in menu). The micro USB power input it a bit awkward, being on the "top" next to the mount screw, but getting the microSD card in and out is easy.

Out of the box, the picture quality is very good, you can easily read number plates in front, and most oncoming vehicles depending on the light angle - except at night, where there is a noticeable fuzziness to the picture - however the night vision IS pretty good, even deep twilight shows as well as day, and full night is pretty good, you can easily read road signs, cars in front and slow moving traffic approaching.

The camera adjusts to different light conditions quickly, and even facing into the sun, the glare wasnt bad enough to stop it recording the road ahead; although again, the readability of oncoming number plates varied; it handles oncoming headlights really well and never gets washed out by a badly adjusted light.

It saves "seamless" video files in .avi format, so no special programs needed, and you can view/delete files via a PC, Mac etc. It can "lock" up to 5 files, after that it starts to recycle and deletes the oldest when a new "locked" file is created, likewise, it deletes the oldest recording once it runs out of space on the microSD card.

BTW, a card is an optional extra, but mine at least came with a microSD/USB thumb drive adapter. Also supplied was a decent length cable for charging the unit from your cigar lighter.

The big problem is stability, the original model had sound issues, but the firmware fix for that introduced random lock-ups that still havent been addressed by the makers. Out of the box, mine locked up at least once per day for the first week, often only minutes after starting; I tried installing an alternative firmware, but things got no better - on the worst day it locked up 3 times in no more than 2 hours worth of recording. Luckily the reset is nice and easy to get to, and the thing reboots very quickly.

HOWEVER

(Touch wood), since Monday afternoon it has not locked up, even on the 3 hour drive up from London, so it may be a case of letting the electronics "burn in" for a while.

All in all I think that as long as the stability issues are dealt with, this is a fantastic camera for the money.

This is a late evening run through Tewkesbury; a "Day" and "Night" video link to follow. Sorry for the dirty windscreen, it was the end of a long drive up from Guildford.
