Fitting aux in to 2005 Stream (NOT MP3 version)

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm a newbie and about to take delivery of a 55 plate 2.0PDI Laurin and Klement  .

I've spent the last few hours(!) looking at various threads on this and would be great to recieve a conclusive 'yes' to whether I can fit an Aux input.

I have found these products on the web, which is supposed to work with the Stream - can anybody confirm it does/which is the right way to go?

I'm really up for a plug and play solution rather than getting dirty with a soldering iron.

Also - how tricky is it to feed the cable into the centre arm rest box, as I think this is a better location for any MP3 player than the glove box?

Thanks all

both of those will work, but in connecting you will lose the use of the CD changer.

Running the cable is quiet straight forward, but you will have to drill a suitable size hole in the jumbo box to fit the 3.5mm connector through.

You would be better off getting a stream mp3 from eBay, they have the pins at the rear for an aux in, you get to keep the cd changer and the head unit will play mp3s from cd as well (not the ones in the CDC though).

Not exactly plug and play though, as you will have to make the leads up for the aux in socket to connect in to the multiplug at the rear of the head unit.

If you do go down this route the earth pin for the CDC needs moving in the multiplug.

I've fitted a Connects2, same as the one in your second link, it's very straight forward to fit, about as plug-and-play as you'll get. Sound quality is very good. As mannyo says you'll lose your CD-changer but frankly it's obsolete when you can plug an mp3 player in anyway. If you search this sub-forum and the ICE section you should find quite a few threads with some pics on fitting one.

I routed the cable to the top storage box, much much more straight forward than getting it into an in-situ jumbo box.

If you want to get an idea of the work involved in removing your jumbo box/centre console/arm-rest you can see from the link in my sig, I retro-fitted one and it's not trivial.

Edit:

Here's some pics from mine:

Edit 2: If you can get away with running the cable down the side of the centre console under the trim, and then only removing the rear section where the air vents are to give you enough access to fit it to a hole inside the storage area it'll be much simpler.

Thanks, all, most informative.

Interesting solution, the top oddments tray one as I'd kinda got to that as the best place for an MP3 player (I intend to use my HTC which aslo doubles as a sat nav), does anybody have experience of wiring in a 12v power socket there so that there are no unsightly wires around the dash?

The other option is the stream MP3 which I like as I'd quite like to keep the CD changer functionality as well as the Mp3 (yes, I want it all!! )

Andy - could you give me any more details on the changing of the CDC earth pin (sounds complicated) and on a slighly seperate note - I see you have pretty much the same car as mine - what was the costs/benefits of your re-map? (I've been wondering about trying to get similar spec as the TDi 170 as fitted to golf GT TDi later models/Passat)

All help much appreciated, regards to all.

If you can face doing a bit of soldering, you can keep your original unit, CDC functionality and add an Aux input. Just put in a 3 way On/On switch (from Maplin or RSC) and a 3.5mm stereo jack socket (maplin). Locate the Left, Right and Ground wires from the back of the unit (look for the sticker on the unit showing what all the outputs are) snip them and solder to the switch terminals. (i decided where i wanted to mount the switch first, and spliced in the correct length of cable) One side of the switch to the CDC and the other to the 3.5mm . Then you can toggle the switch to choose between CDC or MP3. It's quite easy to do and will cost about £10 for the parts. Can draw you a wiring diagram if you need - there was a 'how to guide' up here, but I don't see it now?

Just put in a 3 way On/On switch (from Maplin or RSC)

Would you mind putting a link or two up for this switch please? Have searched for a triple pole rocker switch but seem to be going round in circles on the maplin, CPC and RS-Components websites :wall:

A photo would be great, I think I know what I'm doing but would be good to see it done by a pro first!

The switch I used was actually a 4 pole on/on type (not 3 as I said- sorry if that led you down the wrong search path) but you will only need to use 3 of the terminals leaving one spare... I'll get a wiring diagram done and post it when I can.

4PDT Toggle switch:

And the stereo 3.5mm jack:

Hope that helps.

One other thing to mention about how it will work once its done. Because you are using the CDC signal path to the Stream, when you throw your switch to the AUX position the Stream doesn't know you are running off the Aux line. You will experience an audio 'silence' for a few seconds when the changer skips to the next disc. It's a small glitch in the mod which I hadn't thought about until I'd done it. I can put up with a couple of seconds of silence every so often :)

Does anyone know if you can put a CD on loop in the CDC? That might be a fix...

here is a wiring diagram for the switch. the wires you need to cut (blue block plugs into HU) are labelled CDC L, R and earth. There is a sticker on the top of the HU which you will see when you pull it out...

Aux Input mod

cheers for the wiring diagram mudgery. i went into maplin for the parts and came out with an epiphany and picked up a 4 pole jack with the idea of connecting a lavalier microphone as a DIY handsfree kit. As I was driving today i used the voice control function of my normal handsfree kit and wondered if i could attach a "siri" style button next to the switch as an extra. will be looking into it when work is so manic

Hi everybody!

Can anyone confirm if this works without the CDC connected? The pin-outs of the non-mp3 stream also have two additional connections for the CDC - are these used?

I'm just wondering if the head unit requires a constant voltage from the CDC unit to confirm that it is present, so that the CD mode can be selected, otherwise defaulting to the in dash player.

Thanks

Does this definitely work as I've tried today using wires 1,2,7 with no joy??

I know this is an old thread but.....

Is tyhis possible, have the Stream (not MKP3) in an 05 Oct II with CDC selectable in the menu although not installed, can I convert this to an AUX in, are the pinouts above relevant?

Thanks in advance

TomC

Be worth PMing Mk2Cliffy above who looked into this in detail.  He hadn't succeeded last time I spoke to him and it seemed to be related to a non-working CDC (which would be similar to not having one present like you).  You can probably pick up a Stream MP3 quite cheaply on eBay these days though.

I tried so many different ways of wiring in an aux lead but the stream just wouldn't recognise it, I think your probably better off buying a stream mp3 which are pretty cheap

Bought a Stream MP3 for about £45 late last year. With a code and via a 'Wanted' on this forum.

Yes, I have it working. Skoda Stream (non mp3) Octavia mk2 2005.

Simply replace CDC L, CDC R & CDC GND with the corresponding strands of your AUX cable. Put a CD in your cd changer and play it.

Audio ONLY works from the aux cable when a cd is playing in the changer. for continuous play without interruption use a DJ mix cd so that it is one long track.
