Tips for removing passenger footwell light?

Featured Replies

My last set of ebay lights arrived today and I've made a start on swapping them out. However I've come unstuck and I can't get the passenger light out. The driver side was straightforward and was a case of just putting a finger behind and pushing. The same should work for the passenger side but I can't get behind it due to the footwell vents being in the way. The light is always on with the door open and the metal case is hotter than the sun!

The trim seems to be part of the glovebox and I don't fancy dropping it just for a bulb.

Any tips? Brute force and a screwdriver is just chewing up the trim :(

Try removing the soft trim covering the footwell vents then disconnect cables from the light so it doesn't get hot. Now use brute force, :) keep pushing with fingers from top and use screwdriver from the bottom. I have spent on this particular light 30 minutes, good luck.

30 minutes? :wall:

I'll give that a go and report back. I did have another go after posting my original message and now have a cut finger and a plaster to show for it :)

Get a set of plastic trim removers from eBay at around £8 and you'll find it'll pop out easily. Took me all of 3 mins to replace mine!

mine was properly stuck, I think those trim removers would not stand a chance, I have actually managed to bend the screwdriver

what bulbs are you using and who are you getting them from.

Had a similar issue with my passenger one - although I could get the bulb holder out the plug and cable were very very short. On the drivers side the plug came out of the housing by about 5-10cm, not the case with passenger one.

Ended up having to disconnect and attach some wire to it to stop it going back inside.

thanks for the reply jozisko.did you have any problems with the drl

For the boot and footwells I used these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270925232570?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 as they worked out cheaper. Took a fortnight to arrive though. I also have a couple spare for the wife's Fabia - boot and glovebox.

Didnt get any errors on the interior bulbs at all?

Interior lights are not monitored by canbus, so no errors.

Not quite true, the ones in the door are.

To remove the light place a small flat bladed screwdriver between the short end of the light (IIRC it is the door side) and gently prise it out, the trim tools are a better idea though.

hi gismo is it the same for the estate boot lights do they just lever out.

Yes they all pop out.

Look at the light lens and you will see one side looks different to the other 3 (slightly darker edge) this is the side you need the lever the light out - GENTLY!!

thanks

Finally managed it using the 'BF' (brute force) method. Unplugged the wiring from the back, gently pulled the foam out of the way, held the heater pipes out of the way and tried squeezing in the clip to push it from the back. Much scraping of skin later I gave up on that idea and went back to the screwdriver approach. Managed to get enough purchase under the light to twist and pop it out.

The trim around the light is a bit 'chewed' but only obvious if you stick your head under the glovebox. Something I don't want to repeat :)
