Dash Cams

Awesome - thanks for the update - can't wait to hear how you get on 'on the road' :)

Incidently, on a different note, I was re-reading the thread for inspiration ;) it appears that one of the picture hosting sites of an ebay seller that was used by one of the first posters in this thread has been hacked - made me chuckle anyways... ;)

Installed in her car tonight. Slightly crap angle unfortunately and as her car is a bit of a skip I've just used duct tape to route the wiring

Initial footage on the driveway in the dark is ok. Just ok.

Flickering probably due to a dirty 12v feed (this was fine in the house on a specialist 12v supply), so the cars fault on that.

Audio clearer for some reason?

You'd have a hard time getting a reg plate at night from this but should be ok for insurance to get a general gist of what happened in a claim.

  • It's funny. Before I found this site, I would never have dreamt of doing mods or even considered buying a dash cam! A bad influence you lot are!!

  • This picture should sum up what I got around to today and what element to this task went wrong after I returned from an extended test drive for a comparison video v the Blackvue.........     chrisw

  • Because you'll have a dead phone after a while from it constantly writing to the flash memory, unless you use a replaceable card.   Because you can leave the camera in the car when parked up to catc

Day quality is quite good, night quality is woeful. Still impressive though. Audio on clip is muted for privacy.

Thinking of buying the genuine 720p one for my rear window as a test.

Footage from a DR32 camera:

https://vimeo.com/68392935

Have not tested in low light / twilight / night time yet but I'm very pleased with the footage I have so far.

Make sure you go for the adhesive mount as the suction mount is bulky. Wiring is plenty long enough. Interface is simple.

Downside: No GPS, Shape is a bit awkward, chrome ring (I used permanant marker to hide chrome) around lens

Bought from eBay and arrived in good time. I didn't want to spend £200+ on a BlackVue straight off without trying the cheaper alternatives. I'm not going to bother with the BlackVue now.

Thanks for that... Please let us know how it performs in low light (etc) :) I've still not sorted myself out so I'd be most interested. Like the look of this one as removable power source / unit is something i'd be most interested in.

How easy is it to remove it from the adhesive mount and 'hide' the device (in the glovebox for example)? :) - just a case of unscrewing it?

Oh... and who did you buy it from? :)

edit: one last question - do you have to mount it 'hanging down' like that? or can you flip it and mount it on the dash?

To remove from the adhesive mount simply disconnect USB lead and unscrew the unit by rotating it. Ensure when you stick the adhesive that you leave enough room for the rotation of the DR32 to remove. The footprint of the adhesive mount once unit is removed is tiny. I remove mine in "questionable" areas, such as when leaving the car unattended in an area not normally in public view. The rest of time (supermarket, driveway, workplace etc) it stays attached. When detached, it fits nicely in the sunglasses holder (or what ever it is for) just above the airvents in the centre of the dash.

I've now wired mine up using the fuse hijack trick.

Camera may be cheaper elsewhere but this seller was recommened to me by a reviewer "TechMoan". Camera arrived with the branding missing that says "Full HD Drive Recorder dr32" across the top of the unit, exposing the two screws. Also camera came without instructions. I suspected this to be a returned unit at first however it has not presented me with any issues. It also appears to be running the latest firmware which addresses some audio clipping and flipping of video (which I'd not be bothered about either personally).

You can mount either way around - I tried it on the dash and while the installation looked ok while driving, the unit would be very obvious if left in the car, hence why I moved mine to just behind the rear view mirror on the passenger side for better clearance. Unit is then obscured by the mirror making it more stealthy.

I need to tidy the wire routing so I'll get some pics tomorrow if you want.

Excellent cheers for that - any thoughts on low light yet? :)

Still nothing on low light yet as I'm never out and about in the dark. I can vouch that the unit still works despite the unusually warm temperatures and is happily mounted to the window still.

On a side note, I had someone threaten to ram me the other week and while the audio was crystal clear of the threats the fact the person was behind meant I could have struggled to prove anything concrete from the video.   I'm now looking to get a cheap (and I mean cheap £20 naff one off eBay) camera for the rear. What would be great is if I could use the reversing camera I already have linked up to some kind of DVR box. Any ideas?

I've just bought a Mobius Action Cam as my second dashcam, for around £48 delivered. If you want to download some samples from Techmoan you can see the quality of this camera is awesome. It uses the same CMOS as the DR32 I believe, but a slightly modified version.

If anyone wants any information on it, let me know. I'm not sure whether this will be my front or rear yet, as my current front one (DoD F520) has a polarising filter on the front of it to reduce windscreen reflections.

I have a budget of between £40 and £50, what would be everyones recommendation please? Just been looking on ebay and can get a dual camera for that, but are they any good?

A friend just got a £25 one and it works a treat, but it is quite big and ideally I would like to leave it in the car, but fear I will have to take it out everyday while I am at work as it is just parked on the street

You want a Mobius Action Cam. Easily the best around for the money.

Total Price: £53.60 (all prices are todays exchange rate)

Only very slightly over your budget, but easily the best camera around for the price, and it's only about the size of a car key. Doesn't have GPS though, but great picture quality. Click Here to Download Samples and choose the one titled '1080p30 day drive' for use a dashcam. There is also a night sample there as well.

You will need a MicroSD card for recording though.

awesome, thanks for taking time to reply in soo much depth. Will get one ordered

I want to get a dash cam but am a bit confused about the fuses and how to wire.

Any tips?

I fancy a mobius as will also come in handy mountain biking, I dont however want wires trailing all over the car. Anyone did a proper install on an octavia and have a guide/pictures of where to take power from etc?

I have 2 BlackVues (front & rear), wiring is simply a piggyback fuse into the dashboard fuse box.

Excellent results, day & night. Pleased

So did you cut the cigarette lighter end off? Which fuse is best to use?

Really easy. You do need a Windows computer though. You download the software from here and just plug the camera in via the small USB cable that's supplied with it (you use the longer one I linked to in the car). You then just open up the program and you can change all of the settings, and it also has a built in firmware update check. You can use the program to update the firmware, it will tell you on the main screen what version you have, and what the latest one is.

If you have an android phone, you can buy an OTG USB adapter (here is one for Samsung Galaxy S3), connect it to the USB cable and you can download the android app (search for therau2000 in the store, and download the mobius app), you can then re-configure the camera from your app instead of connecting to the computer.

Thanks for the info, i'll see about getting one orderd :)

That sounds pretty cool. Could do with a USB port in the head lining and it would be really neat :)

Ordered :)

So did you cut the cigarette lighter end off? Which fuse is best to use?

Yes, & used 7.5A fuse 19 labelled as "control unit for trailer detection" (though from posts elsewhere there seems to be some discrepancy about fuse numbering).

Apparently a dash cam doesn't reduce your insurance premium?

Think I'm going to order the Blackvue DR400HD 2. Just seems small and less noticable.

and arrived, wow it is small. Hopefully I'll get to fit it at the weekend
