Dash Cams

Nice to see more people getting dash cams now. How many leave them in permanently and how long would it last before running the battery down?

  • It's funny. Before I found this site, I would never have dreamt of doing mods or even considered buying a dash cam! A bad influence you lot are!!

  • This picture should sum up what I got around to today and what element to this task went wrong after I returned from an extended test drive for a comparison video v the Blackvue.........     chrisw

  • Because you'll have a dead phone after a while from it constantly writing to the flash memory, unless you use a replaceable card.   Because you can leave the camera in the car when parked up to catc

xreyuk, brilliant camera and the files are massive. Was hoping to get away with a 1GB, but no chance, lol. Done a few tests and tweaked the settings, but like you say it's really easy to use. So far very impressed.

Going to try it out on the way home, but stupidly had the suction mount delivered to home and the camera to work  :wall:

I have thought about it for a while driving for at least 2 hours a day through Reading. Part of me wonders if I post the idiots on You Tube can I get back some of the cost of the camera through advertising

No worries, glad to help, it really is great quality, and it's nice and small too.

You can configure it to make smaller files by changing the bit rate quality (I think it's low, medium and high). By default it's set to medium which is around 15Mbps average rate, where as high (which is what I use) is 18Mbps. At 18Mbps with a 32GB card, you can expect roughly 4 hours of recording.

If you read the manual though (http://www.mytempfiles.info/mobius/index.html) I believe by pressing the mode button during recording will lock the current file, meaning it can't be overwritten (in case you're on a long journey and want to keep it.)

I have got a couple of 8GB cards at home so have stuck one in with the 5 min loop and like you say, press the M button to lock the recording. My journey is an hour so hopefully that will be enough.

I tried wedging the camera in the sun visor but the results were a little jumpy. Also bagged a USB extension from work found in my drawer, result! Come on postie, deliver the windscreen holder tomorrow please

Yeah 59.9 minutes you're looking at on an 8GB card :)

If I'm wiring straight into the fuse box, is there a need to 'earth' the camera?

Best to earth the connection mate. Why not hard wire a cigarette attachment so you have spare?

Twice yesterday I had another driver turn right from the left hand lane on a roudabout and cut me up. They just make so much sense.

and arrived, wow it is small. Hopefully I'll get to fit it at the weekend

Did you get stung for a customs charge?

I would never use it. Don't ever charge my phone and don't have sat nav.

Its a very popular concept in Russia......i suspect this will be one of my first major mods for the car......cannot wait....:D

I didn't. The seller I linked to marked it up as only being worth about $15 I think. Probably the price he buys em at.

Same here, no charge but still waiting on the windscreen mount :(

my two came today. Will fit them at the weekend. Blackvue 500 for the front and a 380 for the rear, going to use Fubars guide to install them.

Still waiting for the windscreen mount, weird how the camera arrived so quickly and I ordered that second

Blackvue seem to really have cool camera's but i do agree with fubar about not being able to fully remove it....but then would you really want to park a vrs in an area where the car is likely to be broken into.....again there is the other thought of people thinking the vehicle looks like a police car especially if you have one like mine which is white, an estate and is a vrs......

But i return back to the concern about not being able to remove it. In the end i am looking for something which can be remove like a gps, has good storage which can be extended, gps tracker, night vision and good quality.....

Buying one of the Mobius ones today (too much money / time my colleagues say) - looks like a cracking bit of kit and wish it was out when I got the DR32 as I wasn't bothered about having a screen. Then again, the screen was ideal to play back footage at the road side to a copper

You can remove the Blackvue unit itself as it just clips into the  mount and the power lead unplugs too, but the mount is stuck to the screen with double sided tape rather than a suction pad so you can't take that out.

Not tried this yet, but I've download the APP for my smart phone and both the blackvue and phone use the micro SD card so should I need to I should be able to just take the micro SD card out of the blackvue and use my smart phone t play back the footage at the roadside?

I've done this in practise and it works, though the app is not as good as the desktop one. You can just play the video with a normal media player too.

Fitted a RoadHawk.

Bought off dogcamsport (I think)

Left in-situ up behind the mirror, permenantly plugged in, first direct to the ciggy lighter socket.

Then after I bought my first satnav last week, plugged in via a £10.00 Halfords splitter/battery protector, which gives me the choice of 2 ciggy sockets and one USB or 1 ciggy and 2 USB, even better the TomTom lead lets me charge mini USB stuff.

The Halfords unit was a perfect snug interference fit for the wee cubby in front of the gear selector.

I SHOULD have bought it at Christmas like I had intended.

Blimey, these Mobius cams come quick - ordered last Sunday and came on Friday.

Item marked as being 5 dollars so no customs.

Came with a cradle (which can be used for the car mount - I have yet to purchase this yet), a 1m USB cable, and a Audio / Video / power cable for connecting to TV.

Also came with a velcro pad which can be used to attach the cam and an allen key (for adjusting focus)

Yet to read up on it but good to see the software is just 'run' as opposed to something else I need to install on my PC.

Currently got the unit charging up - liking the look of it and software config... just a shame:

1) I don't have my vRS at the moment ;) :(

2) it doesn't have the option for the lens to operate at 90 / 270 degree's

Now off to order the blade fuse 'piggy back' adapter and I should be sorted until I can figure out how best to mount it :)

Cant see passed a blackvue my self, i can get a Dr500 and power magic for £220 delivered.

This is a blackvue recording at 720p (it does 1080 but i cant see the difference)

Looks a bit low for you to be driving a truck in that video? :p

Google around for BlackVue DR500GW issues they do not seem to be as good as the 380/400's very hit and miss (I missed twice in a row :( ) and BlackVue's attitude on it is denial of any fault.
