  • It's funny. Before I found this site, I would never have dreamt of doing mods or even considered buying a dash cam! A bad influence you lot are!!

  • This picture should sum up what I got around to today and what element to this task went wrong after I returned from an extended test drive for a comparison video v the Blackvue.........     chrisw

  • Because you'll have a dead phone after a while from it constantly writing to the flash memory, unless you use a replaceable card.   Because you can leave the camera in the car when parked up to catc

Just been having a little look around and came across this....

http://www.expansys....erproof-223533/

Suction screen mount and cycle helmet mounts available

Its ok Brimma but its not the best action cam going tbh and its over priced for the little it does. I run a similar type on bike (they all come with all mounts generally speaking) Better and cheaper action/bullet cams than the contour out there. Youtube some direct comparison reviews for that camera along side the rivals. Drift models especially are outstanding.

Love my DR400G :) Wired in to switched live to it comes on recording and I usually forget about it as its hidden behind the rearview mirror.

I would be wary of buying anything off the bay of e,coming direct from the far east. I would say from personal experience the majority of stuff coming from the far east on the bay of e are very cheap clones/copies, will work for a short period of time before dying on you. They all claim 12 month warranty, but try claiming after 6 months and see what response you get......

I would recommend the Blackvue DR300G, came across this: http://www.hids4u.co.uk/D3-group-buy-Blackvue-Black-Box-Recorder-In-Car-SD-Video-and-Audio-Recorder-DR300G-DR300.html

A very good price of £151.24 delivered from a UK authorised retailer.

This in no way replaces a dash cam, but just thought I'd experiment attaching my Samsung WB600 to a Joby Gorilla Grip wrapped around the passenger headrest supports (obviously not a good idea if you've got a front seat passenger)

In a similar alternative theme here is a Go Pro Hero HD attached to passenger front window obviously a problem if you wanted to open window but it was for a test thing you can see one of my old cameras a semi cheapo one which was ok but nothing compared to the current one and a lot more visible problem being also that it looks like a radar detector etc which is illegal in most EU countries now so not ideal. Id go for a BlackVue for you brimma its really tip top and the prices they have come down to now I would have had one and still might just get one anyway and have one forward one rear.

Installed this one today. Didnt fancy cluttering up the windscreen so velcroed it to the bottom of the dash instead of using the suction mount. You can see the video quality in the ebay ad. Very impressed for the money.

My one of these arrived today (was ordered yesterday). Will probably mount it in the same place as RichieH.

We'll see how this gets on :)

Get it in and share us a video good to have something these days might as well try to protect yourself as much as possible. I had a parking nazi decide to block me from driving off by standing in front of car and refusing to move as he did his ticket I asked him to please move as he was obstructing me he refused then I pointed at camera and he shifted! Didn't stop him throwing ticket in window hitting me in face as I was driving away.... Very lucky man that the car park had its own CCTV tbh he would not have got away with that in an alley that day! :@

After a few days using mine I still am very happy with it. It's wired to a switched live so powers on and off with the ignition so you never have to touch it. And the video quality is good enough for me. I have yet to try night driving but from the review I posted earlier it looks to be acceptable. It probably does not have the refinement of the more expensive units but for me its good value for money.

As on the previous page, the SmartCam ones are supposed to be good for the price. However, if you search YouTube Tony's Dashcam he uses the MiniDVR HD Cam that is sold by dogcamsport.

Let us know, I'm considering one of these but don't know how will it will stay in position there. Is there a sticky back to go with it?

No it does not come with any sticky back, just the suction mouint. I just used some sticky backed velcro strips and it holds it on place fine.

4 things immediately, all are observational though:

1) Blimey! The suction bracket is huge! The camera is well below the interior mirror - with the bracket as far up the screen as possible. Will experiment with different bracket orientations

2) No memory card supplied. No biggie as I already had a spare 8GB, this gives about 95 minutes. That'll do :). Might drop it back to 4GB (45 minutes)

3) RichieH: have you mounted yours upside-down?

4) Where RichieH's mouted his, I seem to recall someone mentioning that that's a light-sensor for the HVAC (although no-one seems to know what is does). but there was uncertainty. Can someone clarify what that is please?

Will play with the mounting to see if it can be better hidden from driver's eye view...........

I have to go out later today, so will see how the footage goes. Will be a trip in daylight and back at night starting on an unlit country lane and then a lit motorway (A2/M2)

One small issue (but not with the unit) my 12v socket is always live. :S Is this common for Octy's?

(Is not a problem as I know where the switched lives are in the fuse-box)

Yes mine is mounted upside down. You can flip the display in the settings.

I dont have the HVAC sensor as my car does not have climate control. So it might not be as easy for you to put it here. This sensor senses the direct sunlight coming into the car and adjusts the climate accordingly. Might not be a good idea to mount over the top of it.

Ok, for now, it's mounted a few inches above the tax disc with the suction bracket. I did try top left corner, but being outside the swept area, wasn't sure how it would perform during this "drought" weather we're having. I'll look for a smaller, more adjustable bracket later as I would idealy like it up behind the mirror.

I'll try and post the videos tomorrow when I get back, but so far they are every bit as good as the ones shown on youtube (if not better).

I really like the BlackVue always seen it as the best available car cam. My only worry was if I wanted to remove it and use in another vehicle how is it fixed to windscreen, looks like its a self adhesive thing?

suction cup.

I have been asked to upload a video to show the field of view when mounted low on the dash so here it is! Dont judge the cam quality from this clip as I didnt have time to upload in higher detail.

I wonder who the psycho nutter was who overtook contravening the solid white line system...........mental!

Yeah. You can hear me back off the throttle because he was heading over a blind crest and I was fearing the worst. It was seeing this kind of bad driving every day that made me get a cam like this.

Cheers for that Richie, doesn't look bad at all.

Uploading can take forever on youtube biggest pain of sharing it cheers. How do you upload in lower detail to save time? I don't see those options it just asks me for the file and then uploads that :( did you convert it first, if so what software do you use as all mine take flippin ages too?

Rich, when the footage is in original quality, can you read reg plates coming the other way? (if they're not going too fast?)

I saw that on the 1080p dash cam from the above thread, you can see reg plates pretty good, even on youtube footage.

If that's worked (in Microsoft we pray).....there's a folder with 2 files, a day and a night. (The night one: it's raining and I think the windscreen needs a cut&cleaning session)

(Note: no settings get manually changed between day and night.)

As you can see, it's still in the lower-left corner, I think I'll move it up an inch or so to avoid the tax-disc.

The files were edited with Windows Movie thingy. The originals run at about 100Mb per minute and appear to be somewhat compressed, so no expectations of Blu-Ray quality HD, but more than usable.

Personally I think it's £50 well spent. Probably better than the dodgy £20 exploding ones and better value than the ones with GPS and accelerometers built in. My only gripes is the mounting bracket being so big, but if, like RichieH, you mount it on the dash, then that's not an issue.

EDIT:

Have uploaded a third file that was taken on an unlit road at night. (My Octy is running +120% Ring Xenons, on both dip and main beams)
