1.4 vRS oil usage woes - emission check?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've been reading some of the oil usage topics.

Mine now has 23,000 on the clock and is using 1lt per 900 miles.

I mentioned it at the 10,000 service and they measured it and sent me away for 1,000 miles and checked the usage and said it was within spec! I didn't bother mentioning it again at the 20,000 service.

Has anyone who has high oil usage had an emissions check done?

So on 23,000 miles that's 24 litres of oil ? Is this right ?

lol surely not!

Yep! Costing me a fortune!

Getting a nice regular & constant feed of fresh oil!!

Good thing is that you dont need to do oil changes just drain & change the filter

& refill that oil.

(almost being serious but not quite! that normally applies to Land Rovers)

I think i would be getting the matter resolved while your vehicle is in warranty.

Are you thrashing your motor all the time and from cold,

ie before your oil is up to temperature?

?? What sort of MPG do you get?

If i was getting 50 mpg all the time i might suffer the high oil usage,

but if you get 25, 35 & maximum 42 then stuff that oil usage.

'I am now getting 40 mpg regularly & 50 mpg easily, at 22 months old & 9000 miles & using no oil..

Now running very smooth and getting faster when booted.

That is from an engine that was drinking oil with 5000 miles on the clock.

Probably my engine will give up before yours, who knows.

Thats why i was wondering about emissions - if it fails now then surely Skoda must put it right under warranty.

Its a company car so i'm not too bothered, but i don't want Skoda to get away with it!

As far as MPG goes, i'm very happy with it, easily get 40-44 on my 20 mile commute to work, and have got 52 on longer runs, and down in the 20's when it's used like it's been stolen - which is quite often

Does anyone know if you can just get an emission test done at an MOT station and how much - spose i could ring and ask!!!

Any MOT test station will probably do a MOT type 'Emission test' for you, i personally would not bother with that..

But then so could the Skoda Dealership put it on the 'analyzer'.

Get the Dealership to take it serious or just Sling off a few Emails to Skoda UK.

They know about the problem, they know about this Forum & they know what the dealers are doing or not doing.

'3 blind monkeys'.

You are not talking about wasted 'Fuel Emissions'.

You are getting a good Fuel Consumption, but a high oil consumption.

basically,

Its the vRS throwing 'oil' out the back/exhaust which you are bothered about.

Try,

Run it, Get it hot & then,

Park it safely with the hand brake on and in 'Park' & get someone to rev it hard while you hold a sheet of white paper near the tail pipe.

You will see just what Oil is getting ejected.

You can do something about it with Skoda UK,

otherwise some poor un-suspecting person will get landed with it when it leaves your keeping.

Thanks George

Theres plenty of oil coming out of the exhaust, its white and the rear is constantly covered in it.

I'll book it in and get the ball rolling with skoda.

Cheers

The back of the car is covered in oil spots?? Not good mate, get it booked in.

So that's what that is? The black specs I get every so often?

^ From what I've read typically on the forum, the vRS is clearly a different beast. Our Fab & Felly receive 10k changes and don't need any additional oil added in between and that's with respective mileages of 77 & 102k. I find it hard to comprehend some of the consumption figures quoted but I'm sure the oil companies wouldn't object!

So that's what that is? The black specs I get every so often?

I get them and my car is using the normal amount of oil now. I bought a 5 litre bottle of Mobil 1 ESP from new and it's used 2.5 litres 7800 miles.

Did you try and "run it in" from new? Running gently from new doesn't do modern engines any favours; the problem you get is the bores glazing up if treated too gently and then no longer sealing hence high oil consumption. I drove my Scirocco 1.4 TSI normally from day 1; on Long-life servicing intervals (about 19k services) only once have I had to add about 1.5 litres before the first service; thats it. Not needed a top up since and now got 65k on the clock (in just over 2 years).

Despite the traction control, I still got wheelspin off the Dealers forecourt on day 1...and never looked back.

**Chinese Whispers**.

Thats a Forum Problem.

'Diceman' Said,

"Theres plenty of oil coming out of the exhaust, its white and the rear is constantly covered in it."

next poster,

"the back of the car is covered in oil spots?? not good"

next poster

"So thats's what it is? the black specs i get every so often?

Within a few posts, thats become from other posts,

'black specs',

Well lots of us get 'black sooty specs' i imagine, but we do not all have high oil usage..

?? An idea to let 'Diceman' describe if you get 'oily deposits' or just black specs', lets not 'speculate'!

Just an idea.

Chinese Whispers and stories getting out of hand & 'Urban Myths', & different expectations is why Garages & Mechanics need to learn to ask questions & find out the Persons Experience and symptoms, before even touching a vehicle.

Apprentice Mechanics used to get taught that by their Journeyman in the first day of work,

that is why we need mechanics again and not just Technicians & fitters with all the gear and no ideas!

Story of everything in life really.

black soot spots on the back is normal... I started a thread about it last year. I get them occasionally, my car has 28k and uses no oil at all.

Same here. My oil usage has dropped off but still using a bit and I still get them.

I'm asked at the main dealers and they said these engines run very rich and if you do short runs the unburnt fuel can drain past the pistons taking some oil with it then it gets blown out off the exhaust and sticking to the back of the car when you drive.

I may not have explained this very well but this is how i understand it.

"run it it" what does that mean ???

Its a company car so it didn't get treated gently from day one

I thought some engines were being fitted with new piston rings under warranty to address the issue of excessive oil usage?

I agree. What does this mean ? :giggle:

I thought some engines were being fitted with new piston rings under warranty to address the issue of excessive oil usage?

Yes, my car had the new rings but it even worst. It used 7L of oil in 2200 miles.

Do any cars with excessive oil consumption have any other problems like lack of power.

I've not noticed any lack of power, all good in that dept

Does the grade of oil used affect any of the above?

That is: 5w40 vs 5w30.

Due to the numerous threads about oil consumption on this forum, I've been nervously checking my car for oil usage on a weekly basis. It's done 2000 miles since March and it doesn't appear to have used any oil at all.

On the advice of the dealer, I've driven it 'normally' (for a 49 year old) from day one. I haven't been for a long journey in it yet - I've only really used it for going to work, a 12 mile each-way trip.

For me, 'Normally' = Running it in Drive, 95% of the time and in Manual for the remainder - I've not taken it over 4500rpm. Maybe I should soon??

I tried using Sport mode a couple of days ago, but I got a bit anxious so knocked it straight back into Drive. (middle-aged driver)

I generally appear to be getting between 34 and 38 mpg. I'll be doing a few 200+ mile trips to Cornwall in the next couple of months, so I'll see what that brings in terms of fuel and oil consumption

Overall, I couldn't be happier with the car, sometimes I get the impression I'm in the minority, but I suppose people are more likely to express a complaint or disappointment on a public forum, rather than scream their joy about what a great car they are currently driving.
