Dual Mass Flywheel Question

Featured Replies

I've noticed that when holding the car at biting point ,or when pulling away on a slight slope or a hill , the clutch is making a metallic knocking sound. Im thinking most likely this is the DMF. Do they normally make this sound on the MK2? I dont remember my MK1 doing this when it still had the DMF fitted. The car is covered by the used approved warranty. Does this mean that I have to wait for the clutch and flywheel to fail before they will do anything?

Just to add, car has only done 37k miles.

Are you having trouble getting gears to engage or is the car stalling when pulling away or in traffic?

Given that you have the warranty (and the fact that you've done relatively few miles) it might be sensible to mention it to your friendly local Skoda dealer & ask their opinion before you run out of cover..

I know that a number of people with the 1.9pdi Octavia have experienced major problems with DMFs :

Good luck anyway.

Thank Ethel. No problem with the gear selection and no stalling. Just a slight judder and fairly loud knock. Car has about 9 or 10 months warranty left. Have dropped Meadens an email.

Now I come to think of it, my previous car - a 2.0 pdi Octy - occasionally made an odd noise when pulling away from cold in 1st or 2nd but then it went away after about 5 minutes of driving. Very intermittent too. I just put it down to clutch wear (it was on about 70k miles at the time) and then I traded it in anyway(!)

Hope your dealer can shed some light on it anyway - maybe it's the clutch release bearing or similar? 37k miles does sound like quite a low mileage for the DMF to be falling apart from what little I understand about them & their foibles.

Cheers,

David.

If it is get them to fit the single system and you will have no more problems

Not seen a SMF for the TFSi apart from the upgraded Sachs one (£1000!!!!)

I presume the judder is felt through the clutch pedal.

I would say by the time you are at the metalic knocking sound the DMF is in a fairly advanced stage of breakdown.

Next stage could well be bits of it coming through the bellhousing to meet you.

I would let Meadens look at it they are a great dealer. They are also my dealer and converted mine to SMF under warranty at 35K without any trouble at all but mine is a diesel though and there is no OEM SMF for the 2.0 petrol and as you state there is only the Sachs which is megabucks :(

Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for the replies. FH Winters is my local dealer. Meadens would mean catching the boat over to Lymington. (Meadens was where I purchased the car from) Im going to pop in and see them .

I've got the same issue mate, Going in tomorrow at my local benfield dealer to let them have a look at it. Mine sounds like a knocking noise when setting off in 1st and there is some vibrations through the clutch pedal, hopefully if it needs replacing the 12 months used car warranty will cover it

Im hoping if it is clutch or flywheel that they dont insist on waiting for it to fail first, as Im sure that I have read some people were having trouble in this way. Let me know how you get on tomorrow Banzaiman. :)

On a TFSI you'll be lucky to get it replaced, 3 dealers didnt wanna know round my way, Skoda uk, Mark Fox and his useless crew arent interested either.

Mines has been rumbling for over a year, had bearings and needles replaced under warranty to cure it which to me is an admission of a fault, new starter motor as the DMF chews them when its failing and again my starter motor stays on!.

I've spoke to Darkside Developments about a Sachs uprated one and i think that will be my next purchase after timing belt, water pump, two front tyres and road tax!!

How much do darkside developments charge for the uprated Sachs one? If its not going to be replaced under warranty i'll have to shell out to get it fixed myself

having just recived my used approved warranty docs through the post, The clutch components aren't covered because they are classed as wear and tear :(

So how did you get on banzaiman ?

Well suprise suprise, I dropped the car off at the garage and they took it out. Got a phone call 3 hours later saying they couldnt hear any noise. I told them its most audible when setting off up a hill. They took the car out again and said the only sound they could hear was the fuel pump because it was "the vRS model" I'll just have to keep a check on it and if it gets worse it will be going back

Typical!!

A sachs uprated clutch and flywheel is £1,090!!

banzaiman, any change on your clutch? Has it got any worse?

Nope, No change to the feel of the clutch or flywheel. It still has abit of a knocking noise when setting away but it hasn't got any louder. I find if i give it more gas it doesnt seem too bad

Sounds identical to mine.

Have you tried changing the brake fluid and getting the clutch bled until new fluid comes through?

This can cause a pretty rubbish gear change and other symptoms.

I had my brake and clutch fluid changed about 2 months ago. Made no difference TBH. The gearchange is fine though. Its only the bite point thats not great.

Did they just change the fluid, or change the fluid and specifically bleed the clutch.

Every dealer I've spoken to, doesn't bleed the clutch as standard, and charges extra if pushed.

The usual line is "doesn't need doing" even though it too will suffer from old wet fluid.

Ah now that I dont know. May have just been the brakes.
