Hi all,

I have a 2006 Octavia VRS and am thinking about replacing the standard 6cd player for the 6cd bolero unit. I like the look of the Bolero unit and it looks a lot more modern than the standard one and i dont like the cheap looking aftermarket stereos.

I realise that this issue has been discussed a lot on the forum, and i am aware that as i have a 2006 car, i will need to update the can gateway (whatever it may be ) with the a newer version to avoid battery drain issue.

What i would like to know is would a skoda dealer fit the new version of the can gateway and if so how much would it cost, i would have no problems with fitting the bolero itself but i would not be sure about the can gateway and the coding.

If this is not an option, does anyone know of a good place to buy the newer can gateway i need from and how much it costs to be fitted and coded?

For something like that, I'd avoid the dealer and do it yourself.

CAN Gateway will be about £80-100 new, fitting about 10 mins (if behind the glovebox where it should be; if not about 30 mins going the odd but easy way) and coding about 30 mins tops with VCDS.

Eddie_NL on this forum sold me mine (an up to date one), but you could pick up a second hand one on eBay (anything after a K revision).

The newer ones have less options for customisation than the older ones.

If you are anywhere near Hereford or Worcester, I'll be happy to do it all for you (I'm on my mobile so can't see locations of people).

I think item number 130706862010 on eBay is his listing for a pre-coded latest version. Coding is really easy with VCDS though...

Do you have Skoda parking sensors? You might be able to get these to display on the Bolero with a newer CAN gateway.

When I can get back on my laptop, I'll check part numbers and revisions and see if there is a used one around or a cheaper (older) new one.

If they are, I'd go for a newer gateway so you can get OPS to work as well.

You still won't get the parking display on the head unit. To do that you will need to update the park sensor controller.

I have a bang-up-to-date CAN gateway in one of mine, but have not upgraded the park controller and the park and climate displays do not show on the Bolero, and did not show on the Columbus.

The Columbus is now in the other car, and even that doesn't show the displays -- and I'm not forking out for new park controllers when they aren't really needed. The bleeps still work, it's only the display you'll lose, and you shouldn't be looking at the radio when going backwards anyway! I haven't once missed the display on either car I've got.

Is the bolero a direct fit for the standard Octavia stereo, or do you need different trim surrounds?

I put a new CAN gateway in with the standard (retro fit) PDC controller and I got OPS to work on mine.

Sometimes telling the CAN that the car is not what it actually is can make it work. Just like getting the MPH display on Maxidot can be achieved by telling the car it is Australian!

So I can't say it will or won't work for certain until the relevant controllers and Bolero version (HW & SW) are known.

Having the display available and actually looking at it are two seperate issues.

Just as having 200bhp available in a Vrs and actually using them are two seperate issues!

Can the MFSW from a 2006 Octavia be made to work with a Bolero if one of these gateways is fitted ??

Without knowing which steering wheel controller you have it's not possible to say.

However, if the MFSW was factory installed or was working with the previous HU, then it is likely that it will work with the Bolero.

I have ross tech's HEX+CAN VCDS lead and program and I am still in the dark about using it to code/recode a can gateway in one of my Octi's, I fitted a Bolero unit and had someone who was supposed to be a VW expert to code it for me, he charged me £20 for the coding, but it is set to a left hand drive vehicle, so heating controls are set to the passenger side being the main temperature control and also the rear fog lamp illuminates on the n/s instead of the o/s. I have since bought another Octi, same year, spec everything for the wife and as a new tow car, and have bought another Bolero unit and want to fit that to hers too, and also if I can, fix some bugs in mine, also if I can get the parking sensors to show on the display that would be a bonus for the wife, but not a big deal.

 

Is there anyone that could tell me what to do with VCDS to help me get these cars sorted? I am worried that I will mess it up if I start playing on my own. I have contacted ross tech and they were very helpful and quick with a reply, but they expected me to be a pro with the VCDS progam, which I am not, I am not stupid when it comes to diagnostics but we don't go this deep into issues with electronics in the garage where I work.

What is the part number of the CAN gateway you have fitted?

open address 19 Can Gateway > Coding > Long Coding > look through for RHD and tick the box > come out ESC key and click "Do it"

That's sound, I'll try that after work! Is coding a whole new gateway a similar job? Need to do the brides' octi too from scratch!

Unfortunately there is no 'long coding' button, only a 'long coding helper' which isn't much help. I will try and attach some screen shots of what I am looking at.

Can't upload any more pictures. But by clicking on the long coding helper I am greeted with the long coding screen with a drop down box containing:

 

00 Control module NOT coded

35 Vehicle platform PQ35/PQ36 (already selected)

46 Vehicle platform PQ46

 

I have tried selecting the 46 but nothing changed, so I changed it back to 35.

 

I also went through the 'Installation list' but no mention of RHD and all the boxes are ticked for what my car has installed.

 

Any thoughts?

35 is correct for byte 0, you should check byte 1 and 2

you need to get to the other bytes in the long coding, using the down arrow on the keyboard

 

you will have

 

Byte zero = Vehicle Platform

Byte one = vehicle make and body type

byte Two = LHD / RHD and number of doors

Many thanks Langers2k, that did the trick! Well happy! Still getting the fault code of CAN gateway incorrectly coded, but I suppose it is because it is not the one that is supposed to be in the car??

 

Now can anyone help with recoding a gateway from scratch? As I said I am looking to do this myself in the car I bought for the bride, exactly the same vehicle.

I have done it now, but I realised what you were getting at when it became clear from the video after a few seconds in, as soon as they clicked on the other bytes I realised where I was going wrong! I just didn't think I could click on them! Idiot I am!!

Knowing what I know now, could I successfully code another GW provided I search through the old one first using this kind of coding?
