Mg Zr 160

Featured Replies

had a play with one of these tonight, didn't get a chance to use the 4x4 as all pretty much on the move acceleration. i was actually surprised by it, we were pretty much even whatever speed on the move, so if it was a shoot out from the lights he would have lost out where i launched.

when i got home i looked at the stats and they might only be 158bhp and fairly low torque but the thing only weighs about 1100Kg so had about 1/2 a ton on me which is probably where i lost out :( (the car had me, pandy, all my ICE(twin 10's, 3 amps, false floor, power cap) and a boot full of crap in it and the car is about 400Kg heavier to start with  )

need more power!

l remember driving a buddies Rover 214, and thinking WOW, for a 1.4 super mini,, this thing can move,, so am guessing that with some extra power these Rover's would be nice little mover's :thumbup:

little bugger, slightly disapointed i didn't trounce him but the pure concentration he was putting in and the slight air of confusion about him made up for that :D

the best bit was when he had to pull in because of another car and was sat behind me looking at my tow bar

:D:D

rover???? didnt they used to make cars?????? lol

Don't be surprised re the MG !

Before I got the parents the 2.0 Fabia and I had a 4x4 Octavia, I got them a 200Vi Rover which was basically the same vvc engine as the ZR160 (143ps and the ZR added some induction/exhaust changes for the extra 10% power).

I've drove it a fair bit and the engine was terrific - great when the second /vvc cam set up came in to play from 5000 to 7000 + rpm.

The best acceleration comparison I can remember was the day I drove it north for them. On the A50 from Derby to Stoke (long dual with occasional roundabouts if you know it) , I kept being hassled by a Volvo V40 T4 with 200bhp in traffic. Every time the traffic cleared or we left a roundabout, the Volvo pushed then gap was level pegging and then the Rover pulled away.

Very little in it, great fun and as a cheap hot hatch (even cheaper now!) if you can find a well maintained one (vvc is not DIY friendly !) I'd have one.

I drove a ZS at Thruxton and was really impressed with both performance and handlign - just let down by the interior.

i was thinking about a ZS 180 when we were looking at changing from the Renault but the interior didnt sell it to me at all, i liked the styling though and the engine is apparently very good... 2.5 quad cam in the 180 ZS.

Octy had all that and more though so here i am.

Interesting to see how these sell.Really they should be a cracking bargain but presume demand for these will in a funny way be quite high.

Really odd situation and I wonder whether they will all end up in the hands of the wrong kind of buyer.

Hope not.I was wrong the the chinese getting the MG bit (I think,I still don't understand who owns what after the debacle :o )

Auto express were suggesting the MG will be a stand alone specialist company like Aston Martin (in the loosest possible sense!).They should have done that before.Maybe it will be a really good thing and proper use could be made of the MG name. They can obviously produce quick cars.Be nice if some real crackers were produced.A proper car, nice engine, nice interior etc and I mean top quality Audi / merc etc.No corner cutting because it won't work

If it happened and they got it right,I would consider an MG.Honest :)

i remember a few years back MG made a v8 roadster... cant remember the exact name now but by all accounts it was a good car, nicely made, good strong engine and quality interior.

you have to wonder if the recent down size and misfortune have caused the problems they are having now due to lack of quality in the products.

B***o*** sitting here having my lunch reading my new autocar. They have a rescue package suggestion and an artists impression of a cracking looking but 'fantasy 'Austin Healey V8.

Seems to me everyone has the same ideas about what could and should be done.Don't really think any of the current line up should wear an MG badge.Think it was a very cheap way of trying to sell the cars with the tarting up.Sorry to MG owners, but it all seems so blatently obvious what they could have done :(

Sorry to correct you there mate, but Aston isnt a standalone company.

MG were trying to cut it with the big boys.

None of you aware of the SVR??

Trouble is even this is not their own design. Another re badge. Notice the fiat punto front light assemblies?

and the ford light switch's

and as said the fact that it is a re-model'd car from another band

erm, parts from another brand, with a different label stuck on the front of the car...pot, kettle, black???

that's very true...mate's missus had a zt sommatorother, the "sports" suspension just meant that it shook the interior loose even faster than usual :D

In standard, unmodified form I would say that a ZR160(157) or previous Vi200 (143) would have the legs of a standard vRS. Autocar tested the original to 60 in 7.1 seconds and no, it wasn't modified like their vRS was :);)

Must be something wrong if a 160bhp NA car even stayed with a remapped 1.8T.

I can pretty easily pull away from Clio 182 which weighs less and have quite a bit more power.

CLio 172's kick my ass round sprint tracks...handling! The mg's have the same bonus.

Don't forget handling can equate to a lot of horsepower. Straight lines there should I agree be little doubt. But these events normally involve at least one bend.

Would be much fairer now I've made some big steps on the handling front. for one I down pitch like a boeing entering corners anymore.

mate, not being funny but i may have (allegadly(forgive spolling but i am just back from a stag doo :o ) 240bhp and he only 158bhp but he also has around 500Kg less wieght and when he only weighs around 1.1 ton thats a fooking lot to account for. as said on the move he only gained on gear changes and that was only about a foot per change. i think most of that was due to lag but tbh it was a laugh anyway :D

Bengie I pulled away from VX220 turbo, 200bhp and alot less weight than the 4x4. I have to agree the ZR should have been no competition at all. That was obviously on a straight road, twisities would have been very different.
