How to say Skoda ?

Featured Replies

In TV adverts on the Continant of Euro they say "scodder". I say "Scoader". My local VW place say Scoader as well.

What say you? Which is correct?

Didn't know there was another way of saying it!

On the advert, they confusingly say "Skoda" as in SSk o-dah

The bloke at the end says "Sh k-oda" simply clever...

I believe in Czech it's "Show-duh"

I saw that advert too - daft I call it, over here everyone knows the brand as Sko - der. Rhyming with loader.

But I noticed a lot of dealers and salesmen call our model Oct-arvia.(And Farbia) I've always thought of it as Oct-ay-via and Fay-bia. So which of those is right?

Sausage Soda

In the accent of Sean Connery

SHHHHHKKODDA

slowda

The salesman is right. It sounds posh like. Another one which got me is apparently the maker of roof based accessories, Thule, is pronounced too-lay.

we have a customer called Thales, pronounced tar-les(i think)

In the manner of Shir Shawn. And he is from the same city as me.

Why insert an R that's not there?

A school teacher mocked the softy southerners for calling a 'pillow' a 'pillar'.

Correct pronounciation is Sh-Cod-Ah. Founded by Emil Skoda the word means Harm or damage in Czech and Polish.

Cod's a fish

Definately a Shk at the start I gather. Staff at MK are told they must pronounce correctly. Came back from Praha a few month ago and they all pronounce the

Š as a Sh.

similar to a lot of German then.

Words like stark (strong) are pronounced shtark

my wife pronounces skoda this way "that bluddy car again huff".

Then we get into the pronunciation of model names. Is it Octavia (as in hay) or Octavia (as in far). Likewise Fabia (ahh or ay). I've always gone down the hay/ay route personally, but am happy to stand corrected :-).

My mate's Slovakian girlfriend said that in her language it translates as 'Shame'... and the google translator backs that up!

"škoda - damage, loss, pity, shame, harm, injury"

Oh the shame of owning a Skoda. Lol

Skoda, pronounced "too tight to buy a VW or Audi" :giggle:

When I left two VW Golf GTI's standing at some traffic lights, it was (well if my lip reading was right) Skoda had an 'F' in it.

F*****ing Skoda.

Shkodda ... but I have pronounced it Skoada for over 4 decades so it's dificult to get out of the habit!

Being from London I regularly get a wrist slap from MK lecturers with the pronounciation.

Skoda - Shkoda

Octavia - Octarvia

Fabia - Farbia

Are apparently the correct ways! We all know what we are talking about, unless you have a customer who asks "do you have one of the those Citi60's in yet"? Citigo? Yes..... Citisixty?

Blackspaven I have heard that from a few people about the Skoda meaning shame.

There is an eastern European (not sure which country :p) in the place i get tyres, and he says it like this

Taxi!

It's probably the proper way to say it like Sir Sean but I say Sko-dah coz otherwise I'll get looked at like I'm stranger than normal.
