4 new tyres needed - budget or performance?

Featured Replies

What would people here recommend for an octy 1.4TSI? I notice the bulk of replies here are from owners of Vrs octys and 1.9 diesels and I imagine theres a fair difference in performance between my car and the others mentioned here. I came back from Gatwick to west london the other day and my tyres, Dunlop sport 01 205/60/15, were very noisy (depending on road surface), not particularly comfortable and lacked feel through the steering wheel. I'm contemplating replacing all four with summat that are quiet in all/ most conditions, comfortable, allow better steering feel than the dunlops, track better at motorway speeds and tend not to wander and give acceptable wet and dry grip levels for driving and braking. They're not going to pushed anywhere near the limit as I'm quite a sedate driver (I get me kicks on a motorbike, a Fazer 600). I'm also not too concerned about tyre wear as I barely do 5000mls a year but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on 'em though. The other thing I'm I'd like to know is what are the advantages/ disadvantages of going for a slightly different tyre size, 225 as opposed to 205 'frinstance.

  • A vote for Hankook if you can get them for the right price, superb all rounder. Very close is the Matador MP42 (owned by Conti), I have these all round on my Mondeo and i've pushed it hard, they seem

Ideal tyres made of Velcro with Velcro roads.

  • Falken FK 452 are less than £100 a corner. If you're buying 4 ask about a discount as you regularly can get it down to 4 tyres for the price of three. That goes for all tyres, not just the above.

There is always a trade off. Sport tyres will generally have better steering feel and may have better grip but this can be at the expense of noise and ride comfort. From what you have said I would go for a toruing tyre rather than a sports tyre.

I went for OEM size (205/50/17) because it matches the spare and people on here have said they noticed a drop in fuel economy from running 225/45/17.

I've been quite pleased with the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons I had fitted on my Scout 1.8TSi. They were put on at 27,000 miles and now at 48,000 miles I can't believe the small amount of wear on the fronts. Service coming up soon so I'll get them to swap front and back wheels at the same time, so hopefully be good for another 20K+ miles all round before I need to change them.

Found them to be good and grippy in both the wet and dry and were pretty good in the snow last winter too. Quieter than the Pirelli P-Zero Rossos that were the original fit and harder wearing.

Original cost was £150 each fitted (about the same price still) but not complaining if I get 40K+ miles a set.

Had a set of Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 2's fitted a few day ago for £500. Had conti sc3's before that. The f1's are a clear step up, the most noticeable being in the wet. There is no noticeable loss of grip in the wet at all. You can really feel them biting down. Very impressed.

Have to admit these are going to be my next choice for the ST220, the Matadors I had were fine as a normal road tyre, even good in the wet but as an all out performance tyre not quite good enough, but then it is about £50 a tyre less than say a PS3.

I recently got 4x Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110 for £317.14 fully fitted via Tyretraders. They were for my Fabia though, so only in 205 45 R16 size.

Pleased with them so far. I was running Toyo T1R previously and these seem quieter and grip just as well.

That's a cracking price. Particularly with tyres is when I really wish I still had my Fabia :)

The cost increase between 205/45/16 and 225/40/18 doesn't go unnoticed....

I could hardly believe it myself - £79.28 per tyre fitted. Only the previous day they were about £89 on the same site.

They also had Toyo T1R for about £67 inc fitting!!

Due to replace my rear's and gonna switch from conti premium contact to Michelin Primacy HP, which I can get for £72 each delivered from mytyres, and the same for the fronts when they're ready.

Very disappointed in the expense (£140 ish for my size) and wear rate of Michelin Primacy HP. That's why I switched to Barum Bravuris 2 (at £90 ish).

about 2 weeks ago I put 4 Toyo T1R 255/40/18 92y

So far I am really pleased, less road noise and very grippy. Haven't had a chance to put them to the test on A roads yet but will this weekend. Together with the Hunter alignment and new front console bushes it's a different car to drive =)

Just got 2x Barum Bravuris 2's fitted to the rears. Very impressed with them. Done abour 2k miles in all sorts of weather and loads and have inspired confidence every time.

How good would you say the Goodyear 4seasons were in the winter? Just I'm looking at a set of 17 audi alloys with these fitted part used, but not much size is 225/50/17. I know winter tyres will perform better but I could swap when they are worn through.

Just bought four brand new model Dunlop Sport Maxx RTs to replace my OE Conti 2s. £130 per corner all in.

Wheels in Motion, Chesham

Very impressed so far! Early days though.

I second that...they are by far the best tyres I have ever had on my octavia vrs Mk1!!

Had 4 Hankook Ventus Prime 2 fitted today. £71 per corner, fully fitted. Not sure if the best price out there, but the reviews seem good, so went for it!

What have you fitted them to - and in what size?

You need to put some car details into car profile and/or signature :)

I cannot speak for the Octavia Chassis just yet but would like to offer the following tyre option. I run on my current vx Neuton NT5000 bought from Neo Brothers online as do many of the Vectra drivers I know online, I also ran these on my previous car a Saab 9-5 Aero which I showed almost no Mercy at all.

The Neutons were far quieter than the Conti's Dunlops and Michelin's and a fraction of the cost, wet grip is on a par with Falkens Dry grip easily with Yokohama.

Ahh,,,, but how did they last? well I got 22K out of the Saab running over 250Hp driving on very twisty B and roads 30 miles per day on my commute to get to the trunk road I needed etc.

They are not the cheapest but they are not ditch finders either. I have no connection to Neo's other than over 40K using these myself.

Apologies: 205/55 R16 91V's for a 2007 Octavia 1.9 TDI....replaced Mohawk which had only done approx 12000 miles, and were very close to the tread markers.
