4 new tyres needed - budget or performance?

Featured Replies

Would never of said that the ride on vRS was harsh. Slightly jittery yes on standard suspension. Even with the koni fsds and eibach springs it's still not harsh.

I put eibachs on a Golf V5 once and that was a bit harsh but it cornered flat with virtually no body roll so it's all a compromise.

  • A vote for Hankook if you can get them for the right price, superb all rounder. Very close is the Matador MP42 (owned by Conti), I have these all round on my Mondeo and i've pushed it hard, they seem

Ideal tyres made of Velcro with Velcro roads.

  • Falken FK 452 are less than £100 a corner. If you're buying 4 ask about a discount as you regularly can get it down to 4 tyres for the price of three. That goes for all tyres, not just the above.

I bought my last VRS diesel 2nd hand and it came with new Nexen N1000's fitted. I was underwhelmed when I saw them but they actually turned out to be pretty good and I would recommend them as a medium budget type tyre.

So how about 17" rims, and a higher aspect ratio tyre? Someone on here had something similar with his winter tyre/ rim set, he had posted some pictures. What he didn't say was if it made the ride quieter, although surely it should make an improvement. Could it be that I just don't really like low aspect ratio tyres!

Cheers

The time has arrived for 2 new tyres on the front of my vRS , the Goodyear excellence have done 22k and they have been very good, not too noisy and have worn very well, I paid just over 100 quid each for them.

I would stick with them but they are hard to get hold of them, think they have been replaced by the f1's which I can get for around 120 a corner. Anybody rate the f1's ? Do they wear ok ? I've always had goodyears but I am thinking of the cheaper brands like falken, hankooks and kuhmo.

If I can get some decent kuhmo's, say for less than £100 a corner I would buy some. They have some pretty good reviews, would I get the same mileage out of them as the goodyears ? Am looking to get between 15k and 20k out of a set with my style of driving.

Or can anyone recommend a good tyre for less than £100 a corner ?

Thanks guys !

Price Hankooks

Guys, any Views on the yokohama C. drive 2's? They seem to get good reviews and are available for around £115 each for the 225/50/17 fitment i require.

Personally I think they are over-rated. This discussion could go on for weeks, I still stand by my opinion that Hankooks offer the best value for money, grip and wear rate as well as comfort.

Are you referring to the yoko's? If so, why did you feel they were overated? Thanks

Just my opinion! Always found them soft, not very long lasting and average all round.

Falken 452's as a mid range tyre wipes the floor with all the more expensive ones. Tried them all on all performance cars I have had. Falkens lasted longest and served my purpose well. Which yearly my tyres do 10k road use, two Nurburgring trips a year on average 25-30laps plus the odd trackday if its wet!

Yoko's are just too soft and quickly wear, I have even delaminated a set within 15mins of driving on track. Shocking to see.

The Falken Zei9x are also decent but only a tenner cheaper.....hence always plumping for the 452's

It'll be good to see Falken's ratings on the label's, hopefully soon.

Out of interest which model Yoko were they?

See my Vredenstein thread! Very impressed, mid range price £75 each fitted. Much nicer than cheapie Sunny I got before which is now on my spare.

Have had Falken 452s before and they were good but not a lot cheaper.

Just had an email advert from National Tyres.

Those Barum Bravuris 2 are now £65 fully fitted for 225/45/17. I paid ~£90 a few months ago.

225 40 18 Kenda's fitted yesterday £59.50 each fully fitted.

It's on there website in that size and currently buy one get one free too ;)

Like others, I have been happy with the Hankook V12 in 225.45.17 flavour. Fitted on the front by the suppling car supermarket. Found them nice and quiet, tracked and self centred well, which the contis on my previous car hadn't. Satisfied, so got another pair when the rears needed changing. Was I glad to get rid of those old Bridgestones! Done about 22000 on the front now, and about 3 mm left to the wear bars. Have never lost grip, spun the wheels or felt like it was going to. My usage is mostly belting up German autobahns or hooning about in the alps and other French twisty roads, so they are given some work to do. Very happy.

Looked about a week ago for my brother in law, cost now, fitted, was about £104.

The Barums are very good. Barum is owned by Continental and they are on a par with Conti of a couple of years ago.

Would not use them on the VRSs as they are not traction rating AA but very fine on the non-VRS spec, or diesel VRS, I imagine, models.

At the moment you'd be brave to purchase Mich or Conti due to there recall issue's, Michelin approx 84000, BF Goodridge and Uniroyal around 841000. .

What are the recalls on Michelin and Conti if you don'\t mind me asking.

Know cars with both brands on.

Rapid air loss through tread separation, although it appears it's only affecting tyre's in the USA. .
