4 new tyres needed - budget or performance?

Featured Replies

A vote for Hankook if you can get them for the right price, superb all rounder. Very close is the Matador MP42 (owned by Conti), I have these all round on my Mondeo and i've pushed it hard, they seem excellent for the money.

Ideal tyres made of Velcro with Velcro roads.

  • Falken FK 452 are less than £100 a corner. If you're buying 4 ask about a discount as you regularly can get it down to 4 tyres for the price of three. That goes for all tyres, not just the above.

Hankooks on both my cars and cannot fault them.

Just replaced my Goodyear Efficigrip with Kumho KU37's, TBH they feel better on a roundabout, where the Goodyears seemed to be folding under themselves thus creating understeer far to quickly. The Kumhos have a slightly wider footprint and a more vertical sidewall (the Goodyears have a rounder cross section).

The wet levels of grip are fine and at least as good if not better than the Goodyears, I found them for £76.50 each, fitted at my place of work included, this was only £6 more (total for 2) than ordering them from Camskill

+1 for the Matadors, have them on my Scout and they perform very well for under £70 a corner.

I have been a big fan of Yokohama since the boy racer days of the A008 on 10" rims on a Mini.....

They are a decent price, grip well in the wet and dry, and seem to have a decent wear rate as well. Not the sportiest but a good all rounder. I'm running C-Drive 2's at the moment and like them.

I do around 40K a year and always buy budget because they are cheaper and seem to last longer maybe due to the harder compound, I dont fly around like nigel onecell but do put the car through its paces at times and ive never had a problem and I dare say you could throw it into a corner at speed and it would be fine provided you know how to handle it and your ESP works lol. MY point being that budget tyres are not at all 'unsafe'. Im currently running on Accelera at £65 a corner.

Try http://www.mytyres.co.uk/

They are mail order and the prices are delivered. They have arrangements with local fitters or you can take it to your local garage.

Good prices.

Whenever I'm in the market for new tyres I Se what my local tyre shops are offering, and then check tyre reviews online from people who are actually running them. Falkens normally for me. Good price and seem to get good reviews. Never had any loss of grip, but then again i guess its the way I drive. Smoothly and not erratic. If you want to go hooning round corners then get pricey sticky tyres. If not then with most tyres you won't notice a difference.

There are only four small patches of rubber keeping you in contact with the road. They are all that lies between you and a ditch.

Any idea that a cheap tyre is always going to put you in a ditch is false, however at the same time, in extreme conditions a premium tyre will serve you better - it is not all about the price but the research and technology that goes into tyre design.

For that reason I will only buy premium tyres.

On my old Octy I favoured Bridgestone's, they seemed to do the job extremely well, only fault was that they were fast wearers.

On my current Octy I hae Continental SC2's and they are working extremely well and they are oh so quiet, so when I need new ones I will go for SC5's. These orginal SC2's are currently destined to see 30k miles before requireing replacement. Wirth every bit of their £100+ a corner.

I found my conti 2's were quite noisy, they also had a tendancy to aquaplane more than the goodyears. I drive from brum to cov and back every day along the a45, on 3 patches the drainage is rubbish (nr landrover dealer, and exit for stonebridge and onto a452 past melbicks) these points really push home the difference in aquaplaning at 60mph+. The contis were poor once they were down to 3mm and so I changed to Goodyear efficigrip (got 1.5mpg extra), better for aquaplaning but horrid shoulder design made them poor round corners.

The biggest thing for safety is braking distance, especially wet braking. A cheaper tyre with more tread depth will out perform an expensive 3/4 worn tyre everyday, but you'd have to replace tyres every 3 months if safety was that important to everyone!, as long as you are not driving like a complete kn0b most tyres of a decent brand will be o.k for U.K speed limits.

Goodyear,Pirelli,Conti's,Michelins will always be more expensive than Hankooks,Falkens,Kumhos etc. are they are worth the extra on a Warmish hatch is another matter? I can understand if the car we we're talking about was a 300bhp+ RWD car.

Interesting thoughts on the P6000's, I don't consider them premium but better than budget. I'll certainly try something a little different in the same price range given the poor reception on here.

OP, let us know what you go for!

Buy the best you can afford, one day you will need them

Barum Bravuris 2. Made by Continental. Around the £90 mark. I found mine through Tyre Shopper who sent them to my local National Tyres for fitting. A few quid cheaper than buying direct from National. Can't fault them and they are considerably cheaper than the OE Michelins.

Now those A008's were poor when it was slightly damp. If Yoko's are not the sportiest, what do you consider to be a sport tyre?

I found that in the wet, if I drove up anything greater then the slightest hill then they'd lose grip - and not under particularly high load either. Also in the wet, pootling round roundabouts you could feel them scrabbling.

As I say, I've used them loads and thought they were fairly good tyres, but on the front of my VRS they were terrible. Admittedly it had a little extra gogo (220bhp) but the REO40s it came with, and reo40s + s001s I replaced them with, were ten times better.

Had some Mabors on the back which my dealer fitted and they were pretty good, surprisingly. Lasted about 40k too!

Okay just had a phone around and can get the P6000 for £106 per corner. Guess thats the way to go then?

Thanks guys

They no longer make the P6000, so they have quoted old stock. .

Kumho KU37 £75 each from my local Kumho tyre centre give em a try.

how are you finding the kumho's matey. im due to replace 2 tyres shortly and currently looking at ps3's or ultrac vorti's possibly the goodyear eagle f1's. i had ps3's on my last vrs and they were ok but might try something different now

I just bought a set of Lassa Phenoma. I bought them based on recommendations from many others and have been more than pleased so far. I've had them on for about 3 months now. The tires provide great traction (especially in the rain) and are much quieter than expected.

I've also read / heard good things about Uniroyal Rainsports.

Have just bought 4 of those - being fitted on Saturday :)

Another vote for the Hankook. I have Ventus evo 2's. Sufficiently grippy, not noticibly noisy, decent feel. Better life than the brother in laws khumo. Currently 20000+ on front, expect another 5000+ before replacement.

Last time I got 2 Bridgestone Potenza 255/40 R18 95Y for my vRS, really good price £260 fitted. They don't hold any stock and have good buying power so can give you the best price

They're not best for fuel economy (but I wouldn't have a Petrol vRS if I was worried about that), and they are better than average in the rain. These are good for over 20K miles on the front and the rears have done over 30K

Excellent actually less wooly than the Rainsports when giving it a bit of stick, picking up another two end of the month for the front well swapping rears to front and new ones on the rear.

How about ride and noise? (Ride is a difficult one with the existing low-profiles on the VRS).

Cheers

Ride will be harsh on a vRS at the best of times, I have 18" wheels on mine, 17" might be better. My tyres are not too bad with noise though. I do recommend them but only at the right price =)
