What Wheel cleaner do I use on painted, unlacquered wheels?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have painted wheels with no lacquer on them. Can anyone reccomend me a wheel cleaner that is safe to use on them?

I spent about 15 mins in Halfords earlier reading the back of wheel cleaners, but didn't have much success. they all say unsuitable for unlacquered wheels.

Thanks

Joe

Soap and water and a good wax i would have thought.

That's what I use. Good stuff and won't hurt the lacquer or finish at all. Not acid based

like many others.

Bilberry as above then polish them and wheel sealant eithe something like nattys paste wax or a nano sealant like gtechniq. Then after that for the next 12 months soap and water

Very Cherry you need something that is non acidic, once they are spotless give them a good couple of coats of (hard) wax, something like FK1000P and you will only need the Very Cherry once or twice a year (just before the wheels need another coat of wax) as normal shampoo will wash off all the brake dust easily.

+1 for Valet Pro Bilberry.

Another mild cleaner that might be worth checking out is this one from AngelWax:

Once you have got your wheels nicely sealed then all you will need is a mild shampoo solution to clean them. I'm with Gizmo in that I only use a dedicated wheel cleaner (even a mild one) a handful of times a year.

Angelwax is the original maker of Bilberry,

The valetpro version is dilutable, whereas the Angelwax version is ready to use.

Used that seller a few times before. Very quick delivery and

very courteous. I'd recommend him to anybody.

Buy a chemical resistant trigger bottle from him as well and dilute

the wheel cleaner with water 50/50. That's still plenty strong enough to do the job

and then you have twice as much. The 5L containers are the best value IMO.

The trigger nozzles screw on to the bottle it came in as well ;)

I use Traffic Film Remover with wax from my local diy shop, £2.25 for a 5 liter tub, put some in a spayer diluted with water it last forever

Still don't get the need for a wheel cleaner. What's wrong with the shampoo you use on the rest of the car?

just doing that wont get my wheels clean even rubbing like mad with sponge

Weird. Has it been a long time since you sealed your wheels / are you leaving it months between washes? I just lightly go over mine with a microfibre wash mitt and the last of the bucket of shampoo I used for the rest of the car, obviously still observing the 2BM. I get ridiculous amounts of brake dust from the porsche brakes on the front too, but it all just comes right off with no real effort.

I use the bilberry as a pre treatment really. Just to loosen and start to break down

the brake dust. I spray a goodly amount onto each wheel before I start washing

the car. By the time I get to the wheels with the last of the shampoo water a gentle wipe

is all it takes to shift it. I suppose how easy your wheels are to seal has some bearing on this.

I suppose it's easier to clean complicated/intricate wheels if you use a wheel cleaner

and a brush. My old saab multi spoke alloys were a mare to clean without wheel cleaner.
