Dog crate needed quick

Featured Replies

Picking my female border collie pup up next Wednesday/Thursday a week and I'm having major problems finding a dog crate. Don't want the guard as I want to keep the inside of the car as clean as possible (!) and to be able to shove a couple of boots down the side. I have a rubber boot mat in there at the moment. I have discovered the problem is the boot lip (have no spare tyre) and that the kids like the seats reclined which, to my reckoning makes the depth of the boot from 72cm at the base to around 48cm at the base of the headrest. Any dog owners out there with a crate in the back of their yeti please help!

Don't forget that the two outer seats can be pulled forward, so if the children don't need too much leg room (or you can chop their legs off) that will give you more room.

Don't forget you can alter the angle of recline on the backrest of the rear seats, getting them more upright.

We are very happy with our Lintran DB3 Tracker - they are expensive but hold their value well and, being fibreglass, contain dirt better than a mesh crate. They keep some models in stock but as you don't have a spare wheel, you will need the modified "hatchback" option. http://www.lintran.co.uk/db3-tracker-128.html

Alternatively you could use a soft kennel - we have a Maelson on the back seat of the XF - it has access from the side or the end, and all sorts of straps to attach it to the car. Again a bit expensive but worth it in terms of quality. http://www.easyanimal.co.uk/maelson-soft-kennel.html?gclid=CLC-k8qV7bECFVJ3fAodgD0AOg

Thanks mbrock - I hope you would reply as I searched 'dog crate' in this forum. I like the look of the Lintran DB3 you have (though husband will not be amused at the price) but there are some on ebay. Please could you tell me if you can recline the back seats when the dog box is in?

Husband drives my father's classic XK8 and the dog will not only be banished from the car but banished from the garage that we emptied to house the car.

Thanks everyone for the tips on adjusting seats - will be trying this out in the morning.

Are you looking to buy one for long term use, or just borrow one for the collection journey?

We have one similar to this;- http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4aabab82f2 that we might be able to help out with, but you'd have to collect from us.

Ours is probably a 'large'; it was a perfect size for our previous Rough Collies but too small for our current Greyhound.

I can take a photo or two plus take measurements and send them to you tomorrow; plus check that it fits in the boot of a Yeti.

Of help?

You would only be able to recline the seats with the DB3 by any significant amount by moving them forward - I don't know if there is a slightly shallower Lintran which would still be big enough for a Border Collie. We've had ours (who is about Collie size) and a chunky Chocolate Lab in it - the lab whinged a bit but he's not used to crates, there was enough room for them. The DB2 is slightly smaller and would give you another inch to play with. The problem I suspect would be finding one with the "hatchback doors" - ours has the standard full-height doors as we have the spare wheel option. If you are buying used, note that the more recent models have key-locking doors, earlier models had sliding bolts.

I'll tell Piper how privileged he is being allowed to ride in a Jaguar, and that other dogs are not so lucky! Although you might encounter Don Baldry and his Lynx Eventer if you go to any Jaguar shows - along with perhaps an Afghan or Golden Retriever in the back!

Ah thanks bahnstormer - you're a bit too far away from us but that was a kind offer. When it stops chucking down with rain I'm off to check out the dimensions of the boot with differing combinations of seats reclining. Didn't realise how shallow the boot depth was with the kids in recline mode!

Tell them to sit up straight! Ours are currently at about the same angle as those in the back of the XF, so hardly bolt upright - and like most cars, the Jag's back seats don't recline anyway.

I also have a border collie (and a skoda yeti) and bought a wire dog crate from www.doggiesolutions.co.uk .

The product code is VCC12HT - its a 3 door medium dog crate which fits perfectly in the yeti boot. I also got the rubber mat from the same people.

I do have the spare wheel option but I think the crate would fit without any problem on the lower floor (probably even better)

The crate also has a sloping back and front so no problem with the rear seats.

I did try but failed to attach a photo of the crate (and my dog) in the yeti

We have had this one http://www.zooplus.co.uk/. Search for sloping dog cages.

It doesn't fit in our Octavia though because of the lip - I don't know if this is the same problem that the Yeti has. It might fit. It's a bit of a lottery finding a dog crate that fits.

Hi Snowdog - I have a big favour to ask - if the crate is in your car at the moment, could you guestimate if a 19cm lip would prevent the door from being open to let the dog in or out!? At this rate I'm going to have to see if I can get a spare tyre kit retrofitted to create a flat floor for a dog crate!

I've just measured and its very close.

If you can hold on for a couple of hours I'll see if I can easily remove the spare wheel bits and see how the cage fits on the lower floor.

Are you anywhere near St Albans. I have a galvanised wire folding dog crate that's sitting in my garage looking for a new home. If you are interested I'll assemble it and see if it fits. If you look on ebay and search for folding dog crates you'll see the style.

Ok, I removed the spare wheel bits and fitted the dog cage on the lower floor with no problems.

Luckily the larger cage door can lift as it opens which means it just clears the rear door sill and opens ok.

I'll try to send a couple of photos via personal messenger if i can.

Usual disclaimers apply ; I can't guarantee that the dog cage you get will be exactly the same size as mine so may not fit or open as mine does.

btw, doggiesolutions processed my order very quickly and I received the cage the next day.

Also if you do order, you may want to get the rubber mat as well (part number RM1004) as the cage floor is just a slippery metal tray.

I don't think he is. I made a similar offer yesterday and am not far from St Albans, but it was declined as I was "a bit too far away".

Wow 2 offers of a crate and people prepared to put crates together to see if they would fit and others taking apart their car boots to see if crates fit! Us Yetians are a kind bunch! I am in Nottingham btw where Yetis are starting to be so common my husband gets strange looks when he waves at people that pass in other Yetis!

Snowdog - I'm ordering the same crate tonight (I won't hold it against you if it doesn't fit- honest). THANK YOU. I hope this thread will help other Yetians so they don't have to spend hours searching and measuring for a dog crate....

Is there a consensus on the best crate to use for 1 dog which only takes up half of the boot (tops) and plays nicely in a Yeti without the spare wheel?

I have a old wire cage for our small Springer and it fits end on in the boot behind 1 1/2 rear seats which are slightly reclined forward. The cage that we have in the house also fits in the boot boot length ways.

Because we have the Greenline with no spare wheel I have rasied the cage up on some polystrene blocks and it is 'locked' to the car via the hooks on the rail, as it clips into the wires

The cage only takes up 50% of the boot and leaves space for boots coats etc

I'll try and take some photos.

I'm going to replace the cage that we use in the car with a smaller version of the large one as it has 3 doors. These are recommended for usein cars as it give multiple escape routes should you be involved in an accident and the boot gets jammed.

I already have this very same crate as I bought it for a qashqai. It sounds like it could fit the yeti which would be excellent as I've not been able to use it in my current car.

I have the medium sized crate with divider (for separating two dogs).

Hi I can recommend the Ferplast Atlas Car Crate, comes in 3 sizes. We have the medium size which fits in the back of the Yeti fine, just need to remove, or slide back and down the 'boot' cover (I have a spare wheel so have the false boot floor). Great for keeping the car clean and storage compartments for the dogs things.

For those with dogs and who don't need a dog crate can I recommend a Hatchbag - we've had them on all our previous cars for years.

I chose not to fit the pieces above the load bars as I didn't think it was necessary - a dog bed goes on top for comfort.

Wooster the younger dog did not like the look of the Yeti, but eventually jumped in and was fine the second time !
