Be interesting to see how they perform.

I don't know what engine mounts the white VRS has but under 1500rpm it's harsh, like the engine shakes the body.

Over that it's fine.

It might just have a solid dog mount? Or the mounts could just be worn..

Still haven't actually been for a test drive yet Lee.

I'd imagine they'll be quite firm until they're bedded in, but I'll be heading out to pick up my replacement wheel bearings tomorrow. So will have a good old test :)

Ok been for a bit of a run through various types of driving to meet up with Pete (group1rs) to pick up my new wheel bearings and bolts.

Now on to the mounts. On first start up the vibration was a little more noticeable than the dog mount alone, but by far still acceptable.

Pulling away the engine feels a lot steadier as expected. There was some vibration that I could feel at 30 mph, but still acceptable.

The 30 then opens to a stretch of 60mph. Nice chance to give it some beans.

Hugely impressed with this. The engine note seems to have changed, more purposeful and eager. It pulled well and the gear change felt nice and sharp.

I have had a slight knock from the front for a while, which became more pronounced when pulling away and through to accelerating in 2nd. After that it's fine. It could be the top mounts as the captive nuts just spin..

Also did some motorway cruising. Again some noticeable cabin noise, but some of it will be from the knackered wheel bearing/(s)!

After I pulled up to Maidstone services I pulled up next to Pete, put the car into neutral and there was a very noticeable vibration through the gear lever. It could be from the exhaust expanding where it was hot. But I will need to look into it further.

Now turning the car off is the most drastic change. It has a violent shudder, which actually made me laugh. Not sure how long that will last.

I'll keep this updated as the settle in

They will settle mate. Gradually so.

Yes mate, on the road they're great. Will be great once they've settled some more. Sorry to see what happened to your car. Glad your ok though.

Be nice to see this back on amd's rollers as a direct comparison before and after.

The stock cars shake at idle a bit - how do you know when the mounts have gone?

tools used to removed top mounts that broke preventing us from undoing the blots

Hammer heat and a grinder! The correct way :)

Got a bit extreme for a couple of top mounts. All seems good now though. Hopefully the annoying knocks are fixed :)

Starter motor appears to be kaput! Just going to get a replacement when my lift arrives.

Noticed someone has scratched the whole passenger side which is really annoying.

Will have a little go with my d/a to see if it helps

Double whammy :(

Double whammy :(

I know mate, pretty sh!t tbh. At least the worst of the scratches have come out with the d/a. Not bad as it's the first time I've used it :D

Changed the starter motor, just got the battery to refit and hopefully jobs a good'un

Good man

Glad you got it sorted and was a simple fix :) Sorry to hear some scr*te has keyed your car! probably some jealous tool. How are you finding the engine mounts now? Made a big differance? And have they settled down a bit now?

Exactly! I'm glad that the worst of it has come out! I wasn't so lucky when my fabia was done things like the glass were repairable but the whole side would need a respray to get it decent on mine :(

They're really good, virtually no engine movement. It feels really positive. Still got a couple of long journeys coming up so will see how they are then :)

Looks good! what machine polisher is that? want to get one for mine, has loads of little scratches and swirls:(

Loving the car, very nice!

I'm looking to do similar and design some honeycomb mesh out of aluminum at work for the grille and widemouth.

Just a quick question.

Did you remove the whole verticle slat peice on the standard grille so you could tiger seal the mesh in or did you just cut the verticle slats out?

  • Author

Thanks very much :)

I cut out the vertical slats out to begin with, but I wasn't overly happen with the finish around the edges, so then cut away more of the backing so it could be bonded to the chrome/ carbon fibre grille part
