bad power band

Featured Replies

So hhad my car on the rollers today today whith a bit dissapointment

Power is down for what a stage 1 car should be but we put that down to struggling todo a full power run without it kicking dow.

But the power tails off after 5000rpm, surley it should hold the power alot longer?

Someone will need to fix the links as im on my phone

Bit disturbing you can see the torque (and hence power) dropping like a stone!

Lack of charge cooling, perhaps?

  • Author

I asked about the cooling and he pointed out the intake temps were 22degrees and there was a great big fan infront of my car to help with the cooling

Car drives great on the road so im not too worried but would have been nice to know a rough power

Peak torque is about stock, so something appears to be amiss? Did you have a "before" run to compare?

Its practically impossible to RR a car with an auto box, be that DSG or conventional and get accurate power figures. The reason being you cannot use full throttle on the RR as the car will kick down and ruin the power run.

A quick google (inconclusively) suggests that if in manual, you can hold it in the "+" gate (or paddle) and it won't kick down - but I suspect that applies to DSG6? Might go and try it...

Once i have an sps il try a stock and then a mapped run to compare, il try the paddle holding technique later :D

You can definetly feel its got alot more that 178.4bhp on the road so im just taking that with a pinch of salt

178.4 unless your George with 4000whp

have you had it into skoda? have they flashed the orginal map back on?

stock power on a mapped car isn't right.....

  • Author

Naa not been back to skoda since it got mapped again on monday, the guy just couldnt manage to get the full power down without it kicking down

Not worried about the low power reading tbh its just the way the power plummets that im baffled at

maybe try a different RR? I know 2 of the people on here that use TMC boxes have RR printouts.... circa 206 bhp and 211 bhp if I remember correctly....

Going to a rr day on the 29th at extreme motorsport in whitburn...... A rather generous dyno i feel but itl be intresting to see how the graphs compare

Yeah i was hoping for just under 220 with my massive bmc intake, the map is quoted at 218; but thats a revo quote

George has standard BHP and has never claimed anything other than that.

He does however have 2 very different geaboxes.

Now on Saturday i happened to take pictures in S7, but thats nothing special as you can go into 7th gear at quite a speed,

Just be in D7.put on Cruise Control and then shift the stick to 'S',

then it shows 'S 7'.

Really the car is still in D7, not at the revs or the speed of really being in S7.

My other car does actually change up to S7.

But as i said previously not at some hyper speed. 127mph or so,

standard engine, standard map. 'Correct Plugs' & gap, good oil & fuel, standard 178bhp or less.

No heat soak, no dramas, 100 celcius oil or less and 14 celcius ambiant.& that is simple.

Nicer running when down below 6 degrees ambient and dry roads. Speed and Economy.

Pictures to prove or not just when i find a lead.

george

edited.

77 mph, you can be at near to double that and still be in S7,

it does not need be in S6,

shifting up to S7 if the gearbox is moded to, really uses the power you have better IMO.

(obviously if you are someplace where you legally can.

The shifts in 'S' before the shift up to 'S7' are what makes the most of the power band & when you have Super charger & Turbo Charger working. Real roads, real climbs and descents & real road surfaces.

On a RR seems like just a waste of time

& effort, going no place fast with a print out to tell you how fast or how much power you might be able to

produce or go sometime, when your engine is not gubbed or being in getting checked over again.)

Was planning taking my Golf to that rr day, maybe see if I can take it & my furby and give you a stock comparison for the day?

That would be brilliant if you could mate

I did wonder how you go about dyno'ing dsg, I had no end of trouble trying to do my auto Merc

Th intake temp (IT) on the dyno is the temp around the air filter NOT the temp of the air going into the engine after being compressed so it could be high intake temps causing it

Tbf iv always thought it heatsoaked a pig even in standerd form..... Any idea what could be causing it?

Yeah most things heatsoak massively , the best way to be sure is to monitor intake temps you can get a cheap'ish thermometer with probe on eBay and keep an eye on it

I don't really understand why people can't use full-throttle in a DSG-car.

It's very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY simple!

You just put the stick in manual-mode, shift it up to 5 and hit the throttle.

Ofc you don't push it past the kickdown, you feel it very clearly when your down there ;)!

Fairly easy to do full throttle in mine too without kickdown - justpush the throttle all the way down but just don't click on the kickdown switch.

Actually a mate of mine has just pointed out that firstly the scaling is all over the place on the dyno , the graphs should cross at 5250rpm and that something is happening at 3500rpm like timing being pulled or a jump in the timing on the map

My first point of call would be to a dyno place that can set it up properly , a good operator should be able to tell you why things are the way they are , do you have the cable and software to log a dyno run as well ?

  • Author

Its going on a rr day on the 29th so it will be good to compare....especially if it comes up fine on the other dyno

The dip at 3500 is the turbo/supercharger switch over, can feel it while driving

looks about right to me, it is Revo isn't it :p

But as said above if the operator was any good he would be telling you what's wrong, as for the kickdown it can be done, I'm sure that at 75% throttle position is 100% open so if you keep the pedal away from the kickdown you should still be getting full throttle. Don't quote me on that though but I'm sure that's how the throttle peddle works on these as they don't have a linear throttle

Disable kickdown? Can't that be done on the vcds?

Disable kickdown? Can't that be done on the vcds?

Eeeh? Where have you seen that? I don't think there is any DSG-related option than can be adjusted through VCDS... Never seen anything here anyway...
