Pulsing metal to metal scraping nosie when turning rigth

Featured Replies

Hello again.

I recently noticed that when I make a slow right turn there is pulsating metal grinding sound. Not continuous, but a intermittent/pulsating sound.

I thought is was the brakes but as they where on there way out, so i changed them this weekend.

Just to find it was back this morning.

The car does pull to the left and the steering wheel vibrates at 70mph it is quiet nosie ride but i thought i was only normal as i just bought the car 3 month ago and always been the same.

Would this be a sign of the wheel bearing on the left (passanger) side or can it be the drive shaft which i understand can be a common problem with the fabias and mine has done 128K.

When changing the brakes noticed the outer tie rod rubbers on both left and right was cracked can this have any thing to do with it.

The socks of the CV joint locked fine.

The alloys are really bad and been beaten buy the previous owners with big dents around the rim edge.

Lastly would i need any special tools to replace the the wheel bearing if it is what i think it is?

Kind regards WEyE

P.s Anyone who knows what the average market value is for a Fabia estate 2002 TDI 126K 3 owners.

Up date

couldn't hear the noise last night even though i was going extra hard around the round about.

Start thinking its the brake caliper that's getting a bit tired and not retracting fast enough after breaking hard, Can replacing the break fluid help ??

Going for a normal commute tonight so will see if it back when its truly warmed up.

I used to have something like this, I upgraded to 312's and the noise went :/ have you got standard calipers? But without hearing it I wouldn't quote me on it lol

I had a wheel bearing done recently and it's a dealer only thing, as the tool to do it is about £1000 apparently, cost my £100 to get it changed by the dealer and £56 for the bearing from my local autoparts place :)

have you got standard calipers?

Yeah Got the standard once, However i got the standard brake pads from EuroCarParts and the gap between the 'hooks' on the front pads was 5mm to narrow.

Looked on the box and they for a VW LUPO, the once on had Audi marking. lucky manage to reuse them the disc was so bad they hardly worn the pads at all. Going back to ECP and giving them a hard time on thursday £12 in the bin unless they accept returns with copper grease on.

I use Mintex standards :) I find them awesome for fast road use

UPDATE

OK this i really mind boggling me now! so went for a 60 mile ride yesterday.

No noise the first 10miles.

After breaking hard the the noise started again, But rater of being scraping sound it was more squeaky but still metallic

also i was the in light left hand turn and when going straight.

Can air in the break fluid cause the caliper to retract slower

Interesting... I get the same thing!! Just done a full disc and pad swap and all was ok until the other day. After a spirited drive through the lanes I noticed I was getting a metallic squeaking when turning right. I stopped... pumped the brake a few times and the noise went??

I'd be interested to know what it was if you find out.... but I assumed it was a slightly sticky piston or something!!

Could also be the sliders are clogged up with c*ap, had that problem on my previous car too :(

I have had this in the past, assumed it was small stone caught between disc and back plate, hence screeching and it does go away.

I have reached through the alloy, pressed the back plate back slightly, and noise has disappeared. I have suffered scored disc before due to this!

HTH

Wouldnt be the caliper seizing? And its caused the disc to warp so you get it as a pulstating sound when moving? Had this on my integra :)

found out mine was a problem with the caliper carrier. The rubber boot on the slider pins had split and caused them to seize. fitted new carriers and the noise hasn't come back since.

Did you sort yours after Wolfeye

Like tomgtturbo, I had a similar problem on my Fabia a while ago. The caliper was seizing on causing the noise at 60-70mph you're probably getting, and squeaking at lower speeds and/or when turning.

Definitely worth sorting sooner rather than later to maintain the life of your caliper and pads.

Update: changed disc and pads greased the calipers, Noise still comes back now and then not as often, at least I know its noting serious with my brakes. As it hasn’t got worse only better after another 6000miles I learned to live with it and ruled out any drive train problem.

Still haven’t tried to install springs for retract the hand brake. Did see some possible marks on the rear brake caliper cylinder head that could been a plumbers wrench teeth marks, where someone might tried to push the cylinder back in without knowing you need to twist and push it as the cylinder tool does. So they might have damage something.

Tip: borrow tool from Halfords. if careful when opening and using it you can wipe down ,re- seal the staples and then return it and you saved your save £30 or so. (?15 online + time for delivery)
