New owner with SDHC card problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am a the proud owner of a new Superb Elegance Estate with pretty well every option box ticked. Having owned most of the "premium" brands, it is fair ti say I a blown away by the quality of this car.

I am trying to make the 32GB SDHC card I bought especially to use with car work. I checked in advance that this new car should support both the size and format of this card, but when I insert it (with music copied from my i-Tunes files) it says "loading" but then gives up and reverts to the previous screen. Any suggestions very welcome.

Thanks in advance

There are numerous threads on this forum regarding slow loading of SD (especially SDHC) cards on the Columbus (and Bolero).

Which one do you have?

If it's a Columbus, there are updated firmware files available for free on the internet (e.g. the 'My GTI' website).

If it's a Bolero, then you will need to go back and get the dealer to update the firmware for you.

Once this is done, you should find that files load very quickly (although any changes to the card will most likely result in the card taking longer to load, but only on the first use).

Thanks for the quick response. I have the Columbus unit.

I have read most of the previous replies before I posted, that's how I knew that the latest firmware versions i.e. on my 2012 car could/should support both 32GB and SDHC cards. I can't see the specific problem I have referenced, but may well have missed it.

Do you know what firmware is on your Columbus?

It could just be that it needs updating.

Are the files you 'copied' in MP3 format? (if not the Columbus won't recognize them)

Do you use a Mac computer? (this puts in a lot of '._' files which may be confusing your Columbus).

Did you format your card at FAT32 prior to copying the files across (if not performance will be slow or non-existent).

Have you tried rebooting the Columbus (press <, > & eject at the same time).

Is the card full? (Try with just a few files on it)

Does it have a simple folder structure without too many layers?

These may all sound really obvious, but until it is clear that these basic things are not the issue, then we could look at more complex solutions.

Thanks again, all good questions/suggestions.

I need to check the firmware version, but as the car was only produced some 6 weeks ago, I am assuming it's pretty well the latest available.

I sue a PC and ensure the card is FAT32 formatted.

I have just checked the files, which I copied from the i-Tunes folder and note they are in MPEG 4 format, so that's probably my problem.

I suspect that you have just found the issue in the Mpeg 4 format.

The only files that the Columbus will read from the SD card is MP3 format.

There are numerous free convertors available of the internet, but I suggest that you look at setting iTunes to copy files from CD in MP3 format natively as this will make it easier in the future to just copy them across.

It is possible to make MP3 copies within iTunes, but this duplicates the files (so you have them in two formats), but it is easy enough to 'move' rather than 'copy' the MP3 format files to the SD card.

I'm confident that this is the solution to the problem you are experiencing.

Hello pmeds and welcome along

The good news is the suggested conversion to MP3 format worked!

Now for the tedious part in needing to convert all my files :(

There's a thread on here from another member whose computer took 2.5 days to convert all their music....

Good luck.

Maybe a dumb question, but why not just plug in an ipod?

Maybe a dumb question, but why not just plug in an ipod?

The only way to plug an iPod in is to fit the MDI (Media Device Interface) which runs from the back of the Columbus to a little black magic box and then to the phone.

I just assumed that as the car had been specd. "with pretty well every option box ticked" that would have been one of the options.
