Has my VRs been remapped?

Featured Replies

Hi all, new to the forums having purchased my first Fabia VRs a few weeks back! been browsing for a while though!

Really enjoying the fabia, even if a few niggles annoy me from time to time (creaks and rattles mostly)

Loving the power too.... and thats where my question lies.

Ive owned a few 200bhp (ish) petrol cars, and a couple of TDi's before, but I'm finding it hard to judge if the fabia has been remapped or not. I bought it from a dealer, and he said he asked the previous owner if it had been remapped, and his reply

Ive owned a few 200bhp (ish) petrol cars, and a couple of TDi's before, but I'm finding it hard to judge if the fabia has been remapped or not. I bought it from a dealer, and he said he asked the previous owner if it had been remapped, and his reply was no, however there are a couple of little tell tale signs that the car was modified in the part (smoked headlights, screw holes where a cupraR splitter obviously once was)

SO I wonder if it is remapped but he didnt tell the dealer as he was worried it might affect the trade in value? who knows!

The car pulls like a train and is very quick thru the gears, and whilst it feels faster than my last diesel (120bhp saab) I'm not sure if it feels as quick as my old golf GTi 25th Anni petrol.... I'm just not sure.

I Dont have VCDS or anything, so is there any other way of knowing, short of going to Jabba or somewhere and getting them to plug the old girl in?

Alex

The standard map has a awful power spike just under 2000rpm, then stops dead at 4,000rpm. If it does this then i`d say it isnt mapped. If there is no big spike that early on and it still pulls past 4,000rpm then i`d say it is mapped.

Wouldn't the dealer be able to tell???

Similar predicament, mine has been remapped by previous to previous owner, but no one knows what to. Annoys me a bit that i don't know

So the dealer cant tell and upon noticing reload whatever firmware has been changed back?

As Matt said, horrible torque spike at 1500k and out of puff by 3k... That's standard.

As matt says - early surge of power that dies almost instantly will probably signify a standard map.

I always notice that Mrs Pasty's standard black car runs out of puff when my remapped red one just keep on pulling.

Why? Does it really matter? Numbers are just for pub talk anyway.

It's pretty safe to say that unless it's got other work which you'd be able to spot (FMIC, diff turbo, etc) it'll have a plug and play map around 160-170bhp or maybe have had a custom map to around 170-175bhp

If it bothers you that much get yourself to a rolling road day or toa local garage with a rolling road and get it figured. Should only cost you like £35 to set your mind at ease.

it's like not knowing your IQ, it makes no difference, but I would like to know still

I still stand by my original comment - Why?

What if you found out you had a particularly low IQ? ;)

Besides; this route of conversation will quickly get into the "differnt rolling roads give different results so it's all pointless" argument if your not careful.

If it drives well and your happy that's really all that matters.

well actually....

at least I would know and perhaps do something about it :)

well actually.....I don't really like the way it drives that much...too aggressive for my liking

different strokes for different folks I guess

ooops, perhaps I do have a low IQ as I managed to bugger up that quote

lol Not getting at you - was only a light hearted comment.

I can see what you're saying.

I had a PD130 Ibiza before my Fabia and I had a plug and play map from Forge (nearest tuner to me at the time)

It was good for "about 165bhp" but i reckon all that power arrived in one massive spike which resulted in loads of wheels spin and then it ran out of puff.

It was like the standard map had been turned up to 11 rather than the complete job my Jabba map on the Fabia is.

That said knowing the bhp figure won't change the way it drives.....

I know you weren't, that's the thing with writing, you don't really get tone, like you do in conversation.

I can't base my car on any other fabia vrs as the others were standard I've had. It just seems jerky like it wants to rip your head off your neck when you give it some. Maybe its the clutch or something else. My car knowledge is up there with my quoting ability lol

If your passing by down here let me know and you're more than happy to pop in for a comparison against my two

Very nice of you, thank you. Where are you?

Do some logs and post it up

Gloucester

Guys,

Cant Dealers notice the re-map on the computers they use?? They often say re-map would void the warranty so surly they can tell??

Apparently if you have vagcom you can tell with vagscope connected whilst you drive and log the results....not exactly sure how it works but something to do with boost levels logged in there, not sure exactly what you are looking for.

Its easy get a cheap ebay vagcom cable, vscd lite and log channel 3,8 and 11 and look at the requested/actual boost levels you'll be able to see straight away if it has for ~£8

It was a second hand car dealer, not main dealer, should have been more clear...

If I plant my foot at say 1500 rpm, it feels like all the torque is suddenly there by the time I hit 2k, it then seems to pull strongly and smoothly up to about 3750 when it doesnt stop pulling, but the torque curve certainly flattens off... its still accellerating but not quite at the same rate as in the previously described rev band (2k-3.75k)

I'm temped to be on the side that it isnt remapped... which is great because when I do eventually remap it it must really feel like a total animal!

Thanks for your replies!

Alex

Just a tip Alex, try and keep your revs above 2000 before you

plant your foot.

1500 is off boost and you are doing the dmf no good at all

flooring it at low revs, particularly in higher gears.

I know, the kick in the back sensation is addictive but

even in standard tune this technique will quickly knacker the dual mass flywheel.

If it is mapped then this is doubly important to avoid as the enhanced

torque will wreck a flywheel in half the time.

Not teaching you how to suck eggs or anything just trying to

keep you from a £600+ repair bill. Which is what it cost to replace my

clutch and flywheel when mine went kaput and I got it done cheaper than average.

As an aside, If it's remapped properly and responsibly it should make

the cars power delivery smoother rather than more savage.

Log group 8. Boost doesn't have to be increased for more power but furling does.

Easiest way to be certain about your cars condition is to pay £40 an get it rolling roaded. You will quickly be able to see the power/torque of the car - circa 140bhp seems to be normal for standard cars, along with any fuelling/boost leaks/clutch slip etc.

I know it's an added cost but will be the best way to be sure.

Sounds exactly, word for word, like my car.. Which I've no reason to think is remapped.. I was the 3rd owner when it was 4.. I'm certain the owner I bought it off hadn't mapped it and I can't see any evidence of it having been modded at all.. sounds like ya on a stock map, bud..
