Amunsden issue on new Blackline

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Picked up my new Blackline yesterday morning and after 300 miles I love it. So much more classy inside than my old 56 plate vRS and the only thing I don't like about it is the annoying beep when you lock/unlock it.

Got a question regarding the sat nav. As it's a brand new car, should the sat nav software not be up to date? The M74 link road in Glasgow isn't on it and it's been open for more than a year.

^^^^^ This!

I was actually going to post a similar question. I have the new Blackline too.

The Nav seems a little out of date - there is a remodelled major road in Liverpool (near Royal Liverpool Hospital) and its been remoddelled for just over a year - 18 months. and the Nav systems thinks I'm off-road. I was suprised it wasn't upto date.

How do we go about updating? is there a regular update CD each year? Is it worth raising to Skoda (esp if 2012 maps are available)?

Nope, your car will have the latest map available. The data is provided by Navteq, and until they have the road mapped it will be missing. The maps employed by all satnav systems are typically around 12 to 18 months old as new roads need to be validated and the road position mapped exactly using very expensive equipment. The road where my sister lives is still missing from Tomtom, Google Maps and the latest Columbus maps and it was built 4 years ago. IIRC it took 2 years for the M6 Toll to appear, and the same for Baldock bypass in Hertfordshire.

Maps are updated annually, and you need to purchase the updated disc from the dealer for around £100. Roads in the UK change very infrequently, and I am still able to navigate perfectly fine using a 2004 map in may Audi navigation system.

The beep on lock and unlock can be disabled using the maxidot computer screen between the instruments. Find the option for ATA confirm and disable it.

Super, many thanks

Is the last post right in saying its up to date. I dont think so, up untill a month ago i had a2yr old tom tom in my car, and as i travel the m8 regurarily through Glasgow from lancs and back i now use the new M74 link opened 12months ago. My tom tom obviously was not aware of its presence. Anyway i sold Tom Tom and bought new Garmin with traffic info cameras etc. This has the new road on it. SO SKODAS SAT NAV IS OUT OF DATE ALLREADY WHY SHOULD YOU PAY FOR A UPDATE WHEN ITS ALLREADY OUT OF DATE.? would you buy something allready out of date at a supermarket. No i think not unless they were giving it away, oh dear i forgot they are.

There are a number of competing mapping companies, and they all work at different speeds. Teleatlas is owned by Tomtom and Navteq by Google, these are the only two mapping companies for the UK and everyone else buys the data from one or the other of these. If Navteq have not yet added the road to their base map then until it is, and its converted and added to the VAG NAV data it will be missing.

The maps are copyrighted Software, so in just the same way as you buy Windows XP, 7, 8 or Microsoft Office. you have to pay for the upgrades, always have done. The maps for my Audi are £140 for just the UK, so you can see why I am still using a disc thats 5 years old.

Tom Tom have also got the M74 link on now, so i presume its Vags fault as both suppliers are now covered. So thats why they are free, perphaps this could be pointed out to the dealers when you pick up your new car and ask them to update it free as soon as Vag get off there proverbial and update,

Hmmm, think I'll send off an email stating that I expect up to date maps on my brand new sat nav, that way I'll have it in writing that I'm not happy and hopefully have some comeback should they charge me the next time they update it

I believe ESRI also map UK

I bought lifetime map updates for my Garmin unit - the last update was entitled something like 2012.3 but still doesn't include the A46 upgrade near Newark which has been sorted for a year or more.

You already have the most up to date maps available I currently have version 8 maps on my Columbus unit and that doesn't have the new m74 either. I will be upgrading to version 9 which came out recently. But my dealer is giving me free upgrades. The current version for Amundsen is v3 which u will have v4 ain't out yet but again the dealer can charge for this

My vrs as 2 sat navs in now, so they can argue with each other, actually its because the amundson did not come with bluetooth, which is stupid when its fitted standard in a citygo why?

Yes i know its the answer i have seen your handiwork brilliant, but the question is why did they not enable it in the factory,to save a very small amount of money.i have to say im a bit timid to handle it myself probably bugger the whole thing up alltogether.

A very good how to do it though.

That remodelled road first appeared on my TomTom map in the September 2012 update. TomTom's 3 monthly updates have had me driving cross-country there for about a year. So that confirms Mannyo's 12-18 month update delay. Looks like the Blacklines just missed the update.

Have to say it is one of the reasons I still reckon a £100 TomTom with £30 annual map update subscription is better value than a £500 Amundsen or a £1500 Columbus despite the trailing cable and sucker mark on the windscreen. Other massive advantage for me is ability to move it to SWMBO's car and the frequent hire cars I get for work.

V4 Amundsen maps should be out shortly I would imagine. The v9 Columbus maps now have the new m74 extension and speed camera info

I bought my new Octavia estate SE+ in October. Picked this level of trim over an elegance which I was leasing due to the inclusion of sat nav. Pretty easy sale for the salesman as I have leased 2 Octavia Estates and knew what I was wanting, not even a test drive required!

Already been back to dealer due to out of date maps - M74 extension has been open for at least 15 months. Although they sympathised they told me it was nothing to do with them - contact skoda uk. Tried that they told me it wasnt their fault, take it up with dealer when new map available :@

I understand mannyo's point re updating but why should I pay for a brand new motor which has an out of date sat nav which will need updating in a few months...

Skoda don't make the maps though they rely on them being correct from the mapping database that navteq use. Which dealer are you using. Henry's in Glasgow update my maps for free they have done so twice now. When I got my vrs with factory fitted Columbus it had v5 maps installed Henry's ordered the v7 disc and updated for free likewise with v8 maps which still did not have the m74 extension added. I now have v9 maps which now has the m74 extension so pretty much upto date. But as I posted above v4 maps ain't out yet for Amundsen as far as I know.

Is the update coded to the car or can you burn the DVD and give it to other members who need the update ?

Update is on DVD not coded to any specific car

Is it not updated off SD card which is then formatted killed after update? one time use only?

The old Amundsen used to be updated off SD card. as far as I know it's DVD now as there are places selling the dvd

Better if it is DVD.

Thanks allan - yes its henry's. Still waiting on response...

I have the plain amundsen (not plus) and it's updated with a CD/DVD. Actually it runs off the disk unless you copy the info to the SD card.
