You were week 42 as well, right?

As I say, without being able to comapre Dunlops to any other rubber yet I cannot fault it...

I also pay attention to german reviews of tyres, tend to be really good :)

OK I'll reserve judgement, I find tyre choices difficult. There seem to be so many car forum tyre discussions and reviews yet most seem conflicting, not comparing like for like, etc.Perhaps these new standards will bring something new to the picture?

Yes, week 42...looking forward to tomorrow,it's been a long wait.

  • So he hasn been online for the previous 13 days. How many oil checks do you reckon Jabo has carried out during that time...... At least 13, thats for sure lol

  • meh... if its not over 100 you're not trying hard enough

  • Abit odd he went from posting about 500 times per day to zero. They must have searched his cell and the contraband laptop was seized by the warden.... ;-)

Added some (crappy iPhone) front right brake photos.

Looks very nice and glad your enjoying it.

Do give it a proper running using full rev range a points in the running in period.

Only negative you didnt get the climatronic system - makes the dash area look a lot nicer :)

Great write up. Keep us posted how it continues to perform.

Check up the firs post for updates in Engine and Handling sections.

Managed to get the oil temp to 107C and burn almost quarter of a tank in 10-15 minuts

My temps were up to 108 cruising on the motorway back in August

Must have been hell of cruise then ;)

your not trying until you've had the oil temps above 130degrees ;)

Exactly, but not able to drive any faster on public roads (my risk treshold is to low for that) and private" ones are crap for that so I need some track time!

OIL USAGE UPDATE

Last night I checked the oil for the first time.

Car was stationary or more or less flat surface (just road camber). It was done two hours after a spirited drive back from work.

I drove 380 miles from 7 delivery miles in 4 days. This included mostly B-roads driving, some dual carriageway driving and one 100 mile trip up and down M25. So combination of my low revs wide open throttle running in regime with now daily redline blast through at least two lower gears in S drive and steady two hours motorway driving with constant revs and start stop traffic.

Max oil temp was 107C (@9C ext temp) , normal 92C (between 4-14C) and 96C (@12C) M25 driving.

The oil level on the dipstick was in the dead middle of the "A" zone as shown in the manual i.e. perfect.

When oil was checked

Two days before oil check

Dry soot present (finger test performed ;) ) and absolutely no any kind of "greasy spots" or any other tell tale signs of oil usage. Engine bay checked thoroughly for any oil leaks and none found.

I was looking for quite a while at the packaging of the iar delivery pathways and I consider it be rather dubious to say the least. It could do with some very cheap but very effective heat shielding in some key places. I will take some photos tomorrow.

Tomorrow I will be cleaning it for the first time, applying multiple layers of wax, taking off all wheels, cleaning them and applying protective coating and copper grease to wheel/hub mating surfaces to prevent galvanic corrosion from happening as reported elsewhere on briskie.

You know the issues I have with oil usage, but my tail pipes are also full of dry soot, it even sticks to the tailgate after a good run, that is probably less noticeable on your black beastie

Let's hope you are lucky, I guess you should be with the new engine code.

Just looked at my engine number, picked it up end of Sept (think it was week 36 or 38 build) and it's the CTHE engine, I'm nearing 1000 miles, have put in about 250ml at 500 so I'll report back at 1000.

I have greasy spots on the back of my car all the time, especially after a fast blast (i.e the hill climb at the last weston meet) and sooty pipes, and puffs of black smoke, but my car doesn't use a drop of oil, so i wouldn't atribute these things to oil usage :whew:

From the above 3 posts it seems that there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to anything any more... rather depressing as I thought CTHE motors were a sure bet...

I will have 500 miles probably by Monday/Tuesday and will check the oil again. In the meantime I decided not to worry about it and enjoy the car :).

Today lunch time I packed her with 3 largish chaps from the office and we went for a pub lunch. On a way back I gave her a bit of a blast and noticed no problems whatsoever, just they were a bit pale when they stumbled out, wonder why?!

She spun her wheels a bit more on one run after going over a really nasty speed bump but picked up really nicely as soon as the grip was re-established.

I am putting few updates to the original post following her first encounter with M25 at morning rush hour and then around mid day on our way back.

To be fair, I'm not bothered about this small oil consumption, both the Pug 207's I had before this used more than that!

Yes,let's all not lose sight of this.My Octy mk2 petrol vRS consistently used 1 litre of oil per 2000 miles, engine always ran perfectly,no black smoke. If a Fabia vRs uses oil fairly moderately like this then nothing to worry about IMO.

How about this for running an engine in Jabo, forgive the american's and the fact they are running in kilometres and we know the USA are imperial, but anyway, see what you think.

I read a mobil one test , for much lower miles... a BMW engine that had done 100,000 miles (the million kilometers is approx 621,000 miles), with oil changes when recomended, and they took it apart and examined it, and they could have sold it as a new engine, as it was still within factory tolerances.......

so does that answer the question of running an engine in on synthetic oil? Or changing oil after 2000 miles or less? Looks to me like it would be unnecessary.

  • Author

Nice Mobil 1 commercial ;)

With early oil change the only way of knowing is to do it and check the oil and filter for particulate metal matter.

When I took that dipstick out oil looked like new on it.

I think you are right guys, the paranoia is reaching its heights lol.

But just for the experimental value of it it would be good to drop that oil and see what's in it.

On another subject.

Did any of you notice your car being a little bit "nervous" on direction change at very high speeds?

I'd describe it as being a little bit too sensitive for my liking.

Also, throttle pedal is "very loosely connected" to the operation of the throttle butterfly. On heavy'ish acceleration in "D" it doesn't react when I ease off the angle a little bit, it keeps going. Only substantial release of the pedal caused the car to lower the revs a bit. Perhaps I have not "mapped the throttle" in my head yet and do not know that sweet spot yet?

Chill,

the DSG has a memory. It will adapt to your driving.

(If someone else drives a bit, you may need to get it back to how you like it.

I can thrash mine and the next day after parking up, it takes a wee while to settle down again.)

If you could now drive normally most of the time, just today, in 'D', start off and drive like it is just a car, no wheel spins, no spirited driving,

later on you will notice a difference.

Less hesitation at junctions etc. Change in the gearbox change points etc.

Then when you next drive with manual changes again it will not just be different, but in 'D' & 'S' you might notice a difference.

Remember you are on Supercharger to 2400 rpm, then Turbo & Super till 3500 rpm.

The revs & gear make a big difference to that & pedal position.

Run it in normally, let the gearbox adjust & get used to it, tyre pressures with passengers and different tyre pressures without,

* Then when you get to know he car,

you can have the electronic steering & then the electronic diff changed in the settings.*

Maybe a slight change to the steering,

You can go heavier, lighter disabled driver setting etc.

I find that easier to just change between the standard 205 or go to the slightly wider 215 tyres for going away out doing a different style of driving,

rather than needing the 'Magic Box plugged in'

(The new Audis RS 3 etc have this adjustable by the driver, almost the same set up as on the vRS)

IMO The Alfa Romeo Mito with TCT gearbox is great for the 'DNA' switch that changes steering and throttle

I got the Electrics fiddled with,

steering and diff and like my TV settings, i forget what it felt like at 'Factory Setting'.

That is what i am back on now, 'factory settings.'.

eg

have fun.

Just out of interest,

And how the DSG works too,

  • Author

@George,

Great thread you linked to, had no idea there was adjustable setting for those parameters!

After 500 miles I already noticed a "betterment" in the pick-up speed from stationary.

However, in its place another one popped out. Having heavily accelerated and then heavily braked when I want to accelerate again the box gets really confused and takes a bit of time to give me drive again. Another learning curve there.

Anyhow, the reason for this post is my morning drive to work. I had to visit TESCO for another helping of Momentum. THen drove normally as traffic allowed and was absolutely gobsmacked when it average 38mpg by the end of my journey! And that was only 12 miles!!! Cars has 500 miles on the clock and doesn't even get the oil temp reading before half way point is reached...

Its either me perfected the mpg chasing game or the car is just fab :)

Mind you, I had two red lines from 2nd gear in "S" (nice railway tunnel just after a busy roundabout and sharp right turn so you are in low gear), some D7 downhill off gas running, engine braking but otherwise normal, 30mph-50mph (people do not tend to understand NSL on single carriageway B-roads :notme: ) and I wasn't really trying so super hard...

@James

Good find, gives you an idea what is going on pretty well :)

Edited by Jabozuma

Jabozuma, I thing George and James1 have hit it on the head..... get to know the car and more than anything just enjoy your car.......youv'e only done 500 miles.

When youv'e done a few thousand miles I bet you will still love ragging the likes of Corsa's etc at the lights.

When I was looking for new wheels Corsa VRX Nurburgring Edition was almost purchased, was really close...

I hope to get one somewhere and smoke it properly!

And yes, I am very excited about the car and it shows I guess  .

I hope this thread will be useful for people deciding or waiting for their car to be delivered.

Since most foras are saturated with "negativity" or "problems" some upbeat and positive write up is of a value...
