When I was looking for new wheels Corsa VRX Nurburgring Edition was almost purchased, was really close...

I nearly bought a VXR Burg too! I'm hoping I will prove to myself i've done the sensible deal and for much less money too!

Very good thread you've got here and as you say it sometimes worries me with all the negative feedback compared to good. But with around 3 weeks left now I can't wait!!

  • So he hasn been online for the previous 13 days. How many oil checks do you reckon Jabo has carried out during that time...... At least 13, thats for sure lol

  • meh... if its not over 100 you're not trying hard enough

  • Abit odd he went from posting about 500 times per day to zero. They must have searched his cell and the contraband laptop was seized by the warden.... ;-)

Dex, I see you made yourself some reg plates already :D

I hope your motor will be as enjoyable and trouble free (touch wood!) as mine is so far!

Dreading oil check later on today...

Hmm.. Maybe  I have bought quite a few things for her to be honest. :giggle:

I hope so too! Just awaiting the phone call from the dealer.. the days are going by so slowly!!

OK,

I've just checked the oil and there is a problem. There is more oil then there was there the last time I checked and it stinks of petrol.

What are the reasons and cures for bore wash?

Would giving it a good trashing cure it?

Was the oil temperature well up above 50 degrees celsius before you dipped it?

I would just run it tomorrow and if you can when you get to work dip it.

12 miles is not really very far to get the oil to normal running temperature at this time of year.

I did 25 miles today at 70 mph and the oil was only at 86 degrees when i stopped.

It was a cold day 5.5 degrees celsius..

Just to do what you said before,

i dipped it an hour later and the oil was at the top orange marker.

I have the correct quantity of oil and it is at the top of the hatch when dipped when hot.oil.

Well, I checked it roughly two hours after I turned the engine off. When I popped the hood it well toasty in there still. I did not turn the ignition to check oil temp.

The same thing I did last time and oil level was in the middle of area marked "A" in the manual. Today it was way above having followed the same procedure and paper I wiped the stick with stank of petrol.

I am worried as bore wash leads to insufficient lubrication of bores and destroys the pistons after a time. lso, oil thinned with petrol is not as good a lubricant as without this unwelcome additive... I will try driving it differently tomorow, i.e. low revs with full open throttle and check the oil again when ai arrive at work. I will also call the dealers first thing and see what they have to say.

People with oil problem were usually replenishing it as it was disappearing and I seem to be having too much of it lol.

BTW, by the end of my journey oil is at full temp 92C. I drop kids off at breakfast club in the morning so engine has more time to soak up some heat on the way to work. I the way back tonight I went to the gym and drove home so motor was pretty toasty.

I just hope some fuel in the oil is not going to spell any disasters and will burn off quickly through oil breather...

I am going to hit the sack now. If you still up see what you can find on having too much oil and having wafting petrol fumes...

Coolant level looked ok

My advice would be put it in 'D' and drive to work, just like a normal drive.

no high revs, low gears etc. Just automatic and have a wee rev if you like, but do not use manual or 'S;.

It is in 2nd just crawling and in 6th or 7th before 50 mph.

stop at work

& 5 minutes later dip the oil.

Sniff it if you like.

No idea how you are getting a proper reading 2 hours after parking,

the oil is too cold all back in the sump and it is a false reading as you are finding out.

If i dip after 2 hours the oil is at the same place as first thing in the morning, up at the top orange marker.

If coolant level is at 'Min' that is fine.

I do not top it to Max.

Jabo, it is under warranty, drive normally and leave the bonnet shut, oil dipping and so on is a Sunday pass time. I am sure it is just a running in thing, everything is brand new and needs a good long run to bed in, maybe have a run out at the weekend.

If possible, try to be consistent with your oil checks, ie do the same mileage, have the oil temp up to at least 90 degrees, and leave it the same length of time. I found mine had apparently dropped from the top to the middle of the cross-hatched section over just 600km, and got concerned.

I'd been leaving it 5-10 minutes after stopping for a check. The next time I left it fifteen minutes, and the level was 3/4 of the way up the cross-hatched section. If 5 minutes can make such a difference, then I can only imagine your two hours, probably not identical oil temperature runs might be varied as well.

I guess we're all a little paranoid that we look for evidence of something that may not be occurring.

Says it all......................

Cheers chaps! Thanks for your advice :) I do think I am overreacting a little bit with forum reading induced paranoia turning me into some freak car hypochondriac :S .

I did what you advised, drove the car normally to work on my circa 23 miles trip (including school run) and dipped that stick of evil precisely 5 mins after the motor was turned off. Oil level was in the middle of area "A" i.e. perfect. It stank with petrol to high heavens but perhaps with petrol engines it is normal? For the past 10 years I owned diesels so perhaps my sneezer is too sensitive for petrol fumes or something...

I am actually cross with myself for acting like a hysterical bride to be :swear: , I'd better STFU and enjoy the car as it should be enjoyed :swear: . Oil dip stick is out of bounds from now on!

I will wait for that yellow oil warning light to come on before I take any further interest with oil on that car.

I realised last night if I keep doing it will spoil the whole pleasure of owning a brand new and excellent vehicle, so I say this to oil checks :moon: !

lol... last time I intentionally checked my oil was just before 4 laps of the nurburgring.... even I couldn't resist the urge to make sure it was alright before that! not checked it since :p

Way to go buddy. I am joining your club as of today!

I never ever checked oil in any of my cars and none of them had any problems. Only once I had the oil light go on i one car but to be fair I really was trashig it so no surprise there...

As for my vRS I was driving without stereo on and with windows down to keep my ears open for any funny noises, was monitoring how it run at idle, paying attention to pick-up and power delivery at acceleration and listening to the engine with windows down - all perfect! :whew: I think it was a fluke and a bit of knee jerk reaction really...

you are thinking way to much into everything.

This is why i dont bother reading any of the oil usage threads.

I think I am beginning to see your point of view :)

What is you mpg at the moment?

  • Author

Overall average over circa 550 miles is 28 mpg. On my normal, mpg concious but not hypermiling drive to work I managed to get 38 mpg on a hilly, bendy "B" roads/town 36-40 miles run. The total mpg is not really a good indication as this includes my running in when I was driving in manual in high gears with full open throttle. It also includes 100 miles on M25 in rush hours.

Just drive the car. Stop worrying and get on with it. I drive how I want, stick fuel and oil in when it needs it and carry on. If you keep worrying you won't enjoy it half as much.

+1.

Nobody wants oil consumption issues because the worst thing about it is the worrying and constant checking of the dipstick etc. No need to go there unless an issue actually arises otherwise you're no better off than if you did have oil problems!!

+1 aswell,

I agree with MartynVRS couldn't have put it better.

Just enjoy your new toy and thrash it...............you know it makes sense.

Jabozumo its a brand new engine it will take a while and before u know it it will be getting better mpg, but as said before dont mother it drive it enthusiastically when it's arrived at the optimum temperature, but most of all enjoy it ;)
