Fabia VRS Engine knocking

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

yet another noise related topic. I have started to notice there is a knocking noice coming from the engine. It’s hard to pick up but I have two videos attached. Engine runs fine and no lights. If it’s normal then all good but just wanted to check. It’s the faint thud thud in the background 👍

You may need to put headphones on 😂 I will try and take a better video but it’s the thud thud noise.

I suppose the title Auto corrected and is 'Engine Knocking'.

Link not available to me.

Knocking is not normal.

So there is a TPI that cover the CTHE 1.4 TSI Twincharger for the Timing chain.

Do you have good spark plugs in, & running it on Super Unleaded E5 97 or 99 ron & not E10 95 Unleaded?

This is a ratttle so different, but gives an idea where Skoda Main Dealers might be no help.

No idea.

Best you tell the people, cars age, miles done.

What service and warranty history has it, has it had Warranty or service work on the system showing on the timing chain.

Best look at those spark plugs.

Has the Water Pump been replaced?        All maybe OT, but the more info you give the less people need to ask to maybe help you.

Someone less Mutt & Jeff than me will be along and maybe tell you exactly what the noise is.

Having noticed similar a while back and to be honest did not think much to it, it then developed into a more metaillic noise over time......after stripping it down to investigate , it was clear the culprit was the water pump.

Was this an expensive fix?

I have read others having this problem so you could be right!

It all depends on what you class as expensive, and who's doing it.

I have seen one post that says the job was done in under 2 hours................don't believe it for a mintue having just done mine AND

most importantly off all, it really depends on the parts used.

You can get a water pump for about £90..............how good will it be and how long will it last is a lottery "imo".

I just done mine with ALL genuine parts and the water pump alone is £240 approx (retail), it's pricey, but I want it to last, had to much experience over the years of cheap parts failing and having to do the job twice, can be less hassle if your doing it yourself

and like me the car is not a daily driver, but if it is and it needs a garage.....then having a pattern part fail can be a nightmare..............and it DOES happen.................

I rest my case

I replaced :-

Aux Belt

Super charger belt

Main Aux belt tensioner

Water pump

Water pump / super charger tensioner

Coolant.

Overall the parts with the discount the local VW dealer kindly gave me, was about £360 inc vat.

Labour was a good few hours, would be quicker next time and is def quicker putting back as you know the pitfalls etc, but I would expect any garage to charge 4 - 6 hours labour minimum, more so a dealer for sure.

If less is quoted then they know some superb shortcuts or they have not done it before and dont know whats involved.

If I had to give it a spanner rating out of 5 for difficulty (like old haynes manual), I would say 4 or 4/12 and if you have "limited" tools / tool kit, then forget it. There is some specific lock pins for the tensioners, you can buy them, use drill bits

or as I did make my own, and then there is a cranked / bent 16mm spanner for releasing the tensioners, did not buy that as I used a crowsfoot as I have a good tool kit., I am just trying to show the big picture because doing this DIY will not be for all.

When done, the engine is a LOT quieter with all the new parts (especially water pump obviously), just goes to show it was getting noisy / wearing over time until you notice it one day. The little 1.4 should be very quiet when idling.

If you listen here to my video, you will see the striking resemblence to the "knocking" when my pump spins, add that to the engine noise and magnify it by the belts, it's highly likely yours IS the water pump "imo"

  • 2 weeks later...

It'll be the bearing on the water pump that's failed, Simple way to check is to take a deck at both belts and watch how they're spinning. As its been quoted above you can pay anything from £60 to £200 for the pump, I paid £62 for mine and its done 25k in 3 year without a hitch(2 of  years being remapped at stage 2). I'm pretty set on my opinion with the cheaper one but I also understand people might have issues in the past.

As for fitting -  If you've never changed one before its tight and a learning process however its pretty simple if using the right methods and tools, First time I changed one I had to fabricate the t10241 tool myself, I later purchased the tool from Poland and when changing the pump for a mate I hammered it in 2 hours(contrary to the comments above).

Tons of videos on youtube if you need help and I also have the proper work manual if you need it, If not  youshould be about £100-150 about to have it fitted if you avoid Skoda.

I was £30 for 2 belts and £62 for the pump so for us cheapo's out there it can be done for under a £100 if moneys tight.

Sorry............ just do not see it's possible to change the water pump and both belts on this engine in 2 hours so I'm pretty sure a garage quoting £150 for this job would have never done it before or made a big mistake and under quoted.

With ref to parts, you have not mentioned replacing / cost of the coolant either.

Drain the clean coolant into a pan, pour it back in at the end of the job.

You may not be a very experienced fitter, it's possible to get a LOT done in two hours, I bet the book says two hours as well which is what the quote would have been based on.

How do you drain clean coolant into a pan when it runs all over the bottom of the vehicle because of where the bottom hose is ?? and why would you re-use it ?.....

Is 25 years experience enough ?? and I do the job right first time every time.

I would be interested to see what the book says.

I can see where this will head, so that's it for me on this topic.

Choose what you want believe buddy that's you choice, I'm not going to sit here and argue about something that took you longer than me.  No need to lose too much coolant if its fresh apart from what's left in the pump when you drain it from the lower rad pipe while having the motor running,

I'm not arguing, I have an opinion and as you correctly state it's a choice we all have.

Book time is 1.9 hours.

Mick is right with the correct bent spanner which is on eBay it can be done in no time probably even faster for a garage with all impact wrenches and ramp, some non dealer garages just don’t rip customers off so £150 for the job when they probably get the pump & belt at trader prices is a fair deal

Well just an update. The car is going into Skoda on Wednesday as I am not mechanically savvy.
I have noticed that the fan is now coming on when you start the car and the garage seemed to think that could be linked with the water pump but could just be a fuse.

Will keep you updated

Update: car still in at Skoda. Water pump checked and all okay. The fan keeps turning on and they can’t seem to find out why ….. they have emailed their “gurus” to see if there is any known issues.

I have seen a few things on here to say the wiring loom can sometimes be damaged going to the fan but they haven’t mentioned that …… so we shall see.

Have they checked any thermostats/temp gauge is the car getting upto temp really fast maybe the thermostat isn’t opening letting water into the full engine , also might need bleeding

Sorry for double posting but the sound doesn’t sound like a knocking it sounds like something trying to open and close unsuccessfully

No the temp is fine and not getting up to temp too quickly. They have also had it plugged in and nothing. So asking the top dogs at Skoda if they have any ideas. I bet they won’t be able to fix it knowing my luck haha
