Aftermarket towbar fitting

Featured Replies

Hi, I have just bought a new Superb, 140 SE Plus Estate. It was a cancelled order so I did not have the option to add towbar prep. I need to tow a small trailer and fit a bike rack ocassionally. Is it necessary to buy the car specific electrics to go with the towbar, or is it OK to fit generic electrics when it will only be used a few times per year. The cost difference is considerable and I don't want to waste my money.

If you have experience of a generic system, please let me know.

I would strongly recommend the custom wiring kit; far better than a lash-up with a relay board. That doesn't mean you have to go through a Skoda garage, of course.

If I use the custom kit, does the car then require coding?

Yes

Agree with what is said above. The none OE kits can cause problems as the car doesn't know about them. They also beep to ondicate the trailer flashers are OK, and personally that annoys the whatsits off me. You can get the right bits from places other than the dealers.

I bought the genuine Skoda detachable toward and skoda electrics kit from Skodaparts.co.uk. Cost just over £400 including delivery.

Towbar was easy enough to fit. Did it on my driveway in about 2 hours. You will need to make a small cut in the bumper but its not visible unless you're underneath the car and Skoda mark the cut line on the bumper for you, so it's easy. It's also really neat.

Fitting the electrics kit is a bit more tricky and time consuming as quite a lot of trim has to be removed to run the loom through to the body control module under the dash board. I got a technician to make the final connections into the BCM and do the coding for me. It's not cheap and takes a while, but as its the proper kit it all goes together easily and works perfectly.

I did all the work (including the electrics and the coding) myself, but must agree that it's a lot of work (it took me a whole weekend to do everything according to my (high) standards). It does give you a lot of knowledge about your own car though.
