Add additional Carplay/Android Auto USB to armrest cubbyhole - How to do it?

Featured Replies

Hi,
I've got the original wired CarPlay/Android Auto USB Charger / Connector in the normal place. My phone is on the large side and I'd like to be able to close the cover and not have phone/wires poking out. To do this, I'd like to ideally add an additional compatible port in the storage area under the arm rest. I've had a quick Google and couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to achieve this please?

Why not just enable wireless Android Auto (link below), then you can charge your phone under the arm rest. The AAWireless dongle should fit in the front cubby hole with a right-angled connector enabling you to close it

Cheers. I've had poor experience with Wireless Android Auto/CarPlay. Borrowed a mate's and it was unreliable. Is the model you linked to solid? I see there's a 2025 model coming out.

The AAWireless 2 is only a few months old, I think the upcoming version adds CarPlay.

We have had 2 AAWireless 1's since they came out and they've been fine. Don't get the Motorola version, it's rubbish

I'm on Android and SHMBO is on Apple, so something that does both is a must. I've just signed up for the release mailing list.

I was thinking that but it must have been a facelift update.

@SomeOfTheGear it does give you the option of sourcing the parts from the facelist model to hook up the USB in the box

@SomeOfTheGear - it is possible to retrofit an additional USB data port in the storage under the armrest, however it's no easy task.

it was available as a factory fit option in some markets, even on pre-facelift Superb.

I contemplated doing, did all the research and figured all the bits and bobs needed - but i didn't end up doing it cause too much effort.

Instead I went down the much easier route and got an AAWireless device (been flawless, no issues, and no lag), as well as converting my rear 12v port to a USB QC port.  this way I can connect wirelessly and charge my phone if I need to.

if u do want the actual additional USB port, then u will need a USB Hub, USB socket, and wiring.

Part numbers:-

  1. 5G0035953C - USB HUB to 2 ports
  2. 3G0035643 - holder of the HUB
  3. 5G0035222E - MIB2 Carplay USB/AUX Port Audio Input with Socket Harness
  4. 8E0973754 - Connector for USB HUB

The HUB itself is powered by a separate power supply, which u'll need to source/tap from somewhere.

u'll need to remove the glovebox headunit so u can access behind it.

u'll need to remove the centre console, plus centre arm storage area to fit the USB hub and additional socket.

This is how it looks when fitted from factory...

The wiring.......

this is my setup in my Superb MY17.

the AAWireless is connected to the existing USB port.  Fits nicely as i can still close that lid.

the 12v socket at the rear is now a dual quick charge USB ports.  i've connected one wire to it and routed it in and up into the centre storage area.  again, the rear compartment can b closed as the USB cable and socket are small/flat enough.

the second QC port is free so the kids can charge their phone or tablet, if needed.

That's very helpful. Thanks.

The Gen2 version of AAWireless 1 did have CarPlay, might be worth getting a 2nd hand one of those whilst you wait for the new model.

The cause for a return of the original AAWireless is unclear especially as it was fully removed from Amazon for a while, but it does come with a noteworthy benefit. AAWireless TWO lacks CarPlay support entirely, as a “Plus” version will be coming with that functionality sometime early this year, but the original adapter does support CarPlay in beta.
