VRS mpg? 30mile trip at 60ish on an empty road? What can I expect?

Featured Replies

Before anyone says : "use a search function", i have and asking the question as I'm interested in specific trips and not the overall all time average mpg!!!!

Looking at ordering a Vrs.

Currently have a Mk1 Vrs TDi.

I do not expect the Tsi to be anywhere near as economical as my current Tdi, neither will i particularly care what mpg id does when i'm going for a spirited run.

However I do a 60 - 70 mile round trip for work so the economy does matter. Going to work at 5am on an empty A road with a few roundabouts cruising at 60-70mph, return trip is on the same road with some traffic but cruising at 40-50 most of the journey. Can I expect to see low 40's mpg wise?

Any info appreciated!!

  • Easily see 40 mpg. Unless you use sport mode at every roundabout like I do lol It'll do less in traffic but expect an average of 38-42 on tht sort of run.

How the hell do you guys get this kind of MPG return. I don't have a particularly heavy foot.... ( only on occasions ) and I'm getting 25MPG (30 MPG Best average). The only thing I have mine poor ret

  • I don't know either. Two possibilities. I either drive in a fuel consuming way or car is faulty/not loosened up yet. However, Semka above drove one with almost the same mileage and was getting 40mpg.

I averaged 42 mpg on my commute at the legal speed limit, not trying to drive particulalry economically.

I'd expect you to do better.

I average about 45 mpg on my 19 mile A-road commute at 60 mph... (driving normally.... if I try hard, and don't brake, backing off early, using the ovverun, I can get into the 50's... 58 mpg ish is my best)

Sorry for seeming thick but what's overrun? The best I've had is 41 mpg driving like the driver driving Miss Daisy :-)

Seriously, with these cold mornings now after 10 miles the trip computer is still only in the high 20s. My car has only done 3,600 miles but I can't see it improving that much.

58 mpg!!!! I think I can hear Karl Pilkington swooshing in to say something :-))))

You should easily get over 40 mpg at 70 mph & 50 mpg at a steady 60 -65 mph.

It requires sticking at around 2400 rpm or below.

At ambient temperature of around 7 degrees or even less it takes at least 5 miles to get the oil to 50*C & around 15 miles to get to 80*C.

I get over 40 mpg after 10 miles at 60 mph & after 20 miles and at 60 mph plus its above 50 mpg

At freezing or around there its 20 miles untill my oil is at 86*C.

When the engine is up to heat its much easier to get good MPG when the Air is cold, more oxygen & better running engine,

just like having 'Performance Air Intakes & Larger Intercoolers' etc but running standard on 99 RON petrol..

george

And a true 60 mpg is possible with a heated up engine, eg running through a 40 mph Average speed camera works,

or as i have done it, when just taking it easy on back roads.

Not just instant Average, over 20 miles or more distances.

when you back of the accelerator, the ECU cuts fuel to the engine.... (overun) so you are using nothing to travel at speed...you can back off WAY earlier than you think approaching roundabouts / hazzards, ect ... the car will still carry decent speed without holding people up... I tend not to brake for roundabouts if I can , assuming I'm soing for fuel efficiancy, (obviously traffic dictates) BUT if you can back off so your approach speed is enough to zip round the roundabout, you will find you do wonders for your fuel efficiancy...

try it, and keep practicing... same theory goes for red lights ect....... you can back off at least 40% earlier than you may think.....

dont be afraid to accelerate, an engine is most efficiant on full throttle, and this is the important bit!

**** every time you brake you waste the fuel that was used to get up to hat speed*****

have fun :) (then wring its neck to have fun at the weekend :p )

edit: like George, I have seen over 60 mpg... but i had to bloody try,and the roads were more 40-50 mph than 50-70....

Most I've seen is 45 on a mix of motorway and a road driving while heading to Oulton Park...

Driving with economy in mind I'd expect about 40-44mpg from the car over that kind of round-trip.

As others say between 40 and 45.

Another vote for low 40's.

yep low fortys o well not to bad i suppose :giggle:

Best I've had is 46 (that was trying quite hard though, with a mostly downhill trip). Average about 36ish overall. 6K on the clock, so maybe it'll get better.

I'd be expecting to get around 6L/100km doing the OP's journey as described.

That's around 47MPG, I believe, and isn't particularly exceptional given the vRS is rated at 6L/100km in the combined city/country cycle in Australia. In other words, it should be getting into the 5's on that sort of journey, but I think VW (and other manufacturers) know how to produce cars that perform well on the official testing procedures. Not that I'm complaining: I'm still getting better numbers than the 4speed auto Focus I had, which was a 10 second 0-100 performer and rated at 8L/100km.

A very boring journey lol

Cheers all for the replies and info.

Certainly gives me a lot more confidence. Booked a second test drive for Monday so will se what happens! Nearly bought a diesel mini a month ago, glad I didn't as a vrs is far more exiting although not sure how I feel about the DSG , used to driving what most people would call "automatic" lorries so thought it would be appealing but may be still prefer using the good ol stick to select the gears so will see!

Have fun with the test drive.

The stick is there to change gear if you wish & the paddles, or just in Auto.

Combination of all or any.

The only thing missing is a clutch pedal.

So many choices & if your press that fast pedal down, not much time to think about Minis.

They are fun & practical.

george

dont try to drive quick in auto matey, on your next test drive use the paddles for a "brisk" drive, changing down through the gears approching corners (or leave in sport if you want an approximation ;) )

use D for cruising , commuting ect ;)

How the hell do you guys get this kind of MPG return. I don't have a particularly heavy foot.... ( only on occasions ) and I'm getting 25MPG (30 MPG Best average). The only thing I have mine poor return is that its still fairly new with 1.5K on the clock.

it will improve with miles... needs about 7,000 on it before it will be giving the best... best I could do in mine when it was new was 35mpg.... got 47 on the way to work yesterday without even trying.....

The best I've seen, and that was trying, was 38mpg over 18 miles trip in normally moving traffic i.e. 30mph in 30 mph zones and 50 mph in 60 mph bits with fair number of round abouts and hills.

Motorway drive was worse and returned circa 37mpg (maxidot was saying one thing and calculated full fill to full fill was shwoing something different).

If I see average 50mpg on ANY trip I will start humping my car!

I also confirm 40 mpg is easily do-able when travelling calmly at around 110-120 kmh (~ 74 mph). Opposed to Jabo's findings (engine maybe still young I guess), highway has always done wonders for me, with as high as 45 mpg over a 200 KM trip. If it has lots of down and uphills I'd imagine that could drop slightly. But honestly, it all depends on how long you can endure waiting behind others... :giggle:

I got 48mpg or so (calculated) our run down to Cornwall from Kent last summer. Car had done circa 600-800 miles.

On the way back we hit bad traffic and got 39mpg (calculated).

Normal driving around town and odd weekend drives further afield give me 35 ish mpg on average.

With the latest cold weather though this drops to 28-32mpg. Heaters on full blast and warm up takes a lot longer.

Engine has 1700 miles so barely broke in. And yes, heaters and heated seats on full blast not helping combined with cold weather...

Managed 40mpg on the commute yesterday (15miles mixed driving in 5 degrees weather). Have managed 42mpg max though in the month I have owned it. Car has nearly 10k miles on it.
