Is the Mk1 vRS still the 'king'?

Featured Replies

I think the 2.0 CR engine is great. But it's everything it should be for a later unit.

Smoother, quieter and more refined.

Better engine, but less fun and less tunable.

Nice that a simple remap sees you between 200 and 210bhp though and you also get some of the "wham" factor back that the mk1 VRS had due to the torque.

On a Common rail?!

Yeh!

The CR also lacks torque compared to the PD for whatever reason.

I think my main worry with the Mark 2 Furbys are safety, I saw one in a crash recently. Jam and sponge everywhere!

I'll get my coat.

:D

I would definitely have a mk2 octy vrs (facelift) over a mk1 octy vrs..... But'if i could buy a new mk1 furby vrs i'd probaly take that over the mk2.... but if they did a diesel in the mk2, then i could possibly be swayed to a mk2. Mk1 is still a great looking car though, i can see me having another one after this one, maybe an SE. The money tree in the back garden has bugger all on it anyway, so that rules out a mk2 for quite a while!

2.0 common rail is a better more refined engine and alot smoother/ quieter... but not as tuneable as the pd + alot more complicated with around 4 times as many sensors.. dpf.. egr cooler.. etc...

doesn't the CR140 map to similar numbers as the PD130 and after that CR seems more tuneable than PD due to being a more modern design? and the PD is certainly not without it's built-in flaws, although a PD140 with a big turbo does hold a certain appeal

Err, the real king was the golf MKIV TDI 150 anniversary wasn't it?

And the prince was was the 150 Gti TDI I believe....

I still miss my MK1 vRS even tho I've had a Leon FR and now own an Octavia vRS TDi, there was just something about the Fabia that made it a special car for me

The CR is restricted by the fuel pump..

U can put alot bigger injectors in a PD coupled with a bigger turbo etc.. and u can get big number bhp aswell as alot more torque than the CR..

I was refering to 2.0 PD140 compared to 2.0 CR140..

Obviously the pd has flywheel issues etc.. but they are such a simple engine compared to the CR when they go wrong its so much easier to diag.. i replaced a 2.0 CR head at work last week n took me at least twice as long as the PD used to with the DPF etc.. :( too many bloody sensors etc aswell lol :D

Dunno about you lot, but i STILL get favourable comments from people when they see my Fabia, telling ME how good they are. :o

PD160 Ibiza

Ermmm....

Good call!

I think from what I have heard the issues with the CR engines are pretty few and far between.

As far as the engine characteristics go, i`d say Bossfox is spot on, my mate has a CR170 Octavia, drives so lovely. Its no flying machine but then neither is a stock fabia. They might well be less tunable now, but who knows in a few years? His getting it mapped in a few weeks so looking forward to seeing what kinda gains it makes.

Personally I was really dissapointed with the mk2 fabia vrs, took it out or an extended test drive and something just didn't feel right about it, i can't put my finger on what it wa tbh, just didn't feel right..

I loved the original fabia vrs but i just think it's a shame nobody has put a real engine in one yet, I'd like to see an r32 lump in there personally.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 2.0 fabia?

Anyone want to say summat about the Fabia 2.0 btw? ;)

You know what actually made the Fabia vRS look so good IMO?

Simply, the bumpers.

Lol ^^ :D wouldn't a r32 lump completly miss the point of the mk1 fabia vrs :S... a great all rounder with decent insurance.. mpg.. torque.. tunability.. reliability.. value for money + cheapness to run..

Putting a r32 or even a 20vt in would ruin at least 4 of those good point of the vrs :D;)

Nobody seriously thinks the 2.0 mk1 fabia was in anyway better than the vrs?? :S really :D!?

yes but to be fair people dont buy them for those reason anymore, if i ever bought another fabia i would shoe horn in the biggest engine i could lay my grubby hands on and then abuse it to within an inch of its life...

p.s i used to own a 2.0 fabia and it was actually quite a good car,, theres no real world difference in acceleration between the 2.0 and the vrs model

And the 2 litre could over take m3s and everything like a king :D

If i was guna put a daft engine in a small car id just get a 9n polo (3 door) with a blown 1.2 petrol engine (lots of those about lol :D)

The 1.9tdi lump was bar far the best thing about the fabia vrs.. its the reason most people bought them + why they sold so many.. the 2.0 was just an old mk3 golf engine that for a 2.0 petrol was pretty slow.. being a petrol it obviously was abit faster from the lights than the tdi.. but it was hardly a major seller (for good reason) aswell as the hight tax/ insurance + low mpg etc.. not really worth it for the power + lack of tuning potential u got..

yeh, your probably right, use something cheap and plentiful.. if i was going to a daft engine conversion i would use a battered felicia which is totally rotten http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/209180-felicia-18t-transplant-thread/ :wall:

MK1 all the way... Alot better looking :)

MK1 all the way... Alot better looking :)

Like that post^^. simple and straight to the point.

Funny how some manufacturers seem to lose their way with new models as i think Skoda did to a certain degree with the Fabia.

It's not a complete and utter munter, but it really doesn't look as well balanced as the mk1 in any guise imo.

Another example, only this time in the complete munter catergory is the Ford Ka.

Just been sitting behind a mk1 and a mk2 at the traffic lights. They were side by side.

Now love 'em or hate them...i actually quite liked the mk1....the mk 2 looks such an idiotic tool against the earlier model.

Tall and narrow and bland, against a car that did look wild and different, inside and out.

No wonder the mk 2 isn't selling well.Must be due for the chop soon, against the 12 year production run of the, mk1. Sez it all really
