The psychology behind the useage of fog lights.

Featured Replies

In my opinion the only people that have fog lights on in good visibility are posers.

They should only be used (without headlights) in seriously reduced visibility to stop the headlight beam shining back, improving visibility but only at much reduced speeds.

No cars I've owned with fog lights make any difference in fog, they've never added anything in my experience. They have always been fitted to cards for cosmetic model differentiation, the jewellery of affluence, which would explain why do many people used to leave them on. Today almost every car has them fitted so it's no longer a badge, in fact to leave them off is closer to the new luxury model indicator of hid or led lights.

Urrell,

Thats what to do if you want then if it works for you, and others see you,  drive with Sidelights & Fog lights only on,

but maybe get out and see if the sidelights are both working, because many seem not to.

(Obviously the Highway Code advices Dipped Lights and Fog Lights where Visibility is less than 100 Meter, or is that Yard,

then off when Visibility improves.)

Skoda never bothered fitting Front Fog lights as Standard in 2010 to 2014 on the Mk2 Fabia vRS or even offered them as an option.

They list them in the Spec though as Standard, they appear in the Skoda Dealers Spec as fitted,

and some sales people even argue they are fitted.

Some members on Briskoda have even been stopped by the Police for Driving with them on,

& it is actually the Sidelights or DRL's they had on.

Yep every now and then I experience the odd **** flashing me because they think I've got my fogs on in the vRS.

They look nice and smart on a car, but let's face it how much use do they get, and are they any use? I tried mine once in fog and they didn't really do anything, only as good as the headlights were, not very good.

Is it the French who have yellow tinted fogs? supposed to be better than a white light.

My 2014 vrs wagon had DRLs and front fogs.

Just realised you're referring to the Fabia....

I agree theyre rarely actually needed. I havent got front fogs on the fabia and i dont miss them.

The rear fog. If im out on the country roads travelling at below 30mph (in an NSL) I'll pop the back fog on. As soon as somebody catches up or i drop into town, I'll turn them off again.

Cant see why people keep the rear fog on when somebodys following. Its serving no purpose..

A lot more daylight front-fogs switched on drivers about these days. I'm sure it is the proliferation of DRLs that is a major factor. People who don't have DRLs feeling left out and so they switch 'em on to pretend like they have....

I think you've hit the nail on the head Tom.

Saw one on the M1 last night after dark. Sidelights on, no headlights, and ONE working fog light. Looking in the mirror, it was difficult to pick them out among the correctly lit car, but it did occur to me that once they got off the motorway onto an unlit road, they weren't going to be able to see very far. I don't know if the headlights were off by design or by malfunction.

Should have been stopped and given a prohibition notice, in my opinion.

The thing that really annoys me is when, yes, there is some fog/mist around but the visibility is still obviously many 100s of metres, and idiots put rear fog lights on. Front fogs used to annoy me, 20 years or so ago, but they don't seem to nowadays. It's the rears that get me, following a blinding red light for mile after mile. I had one in front of me the other day. Visibility could have been measured in miles, and yet because of a bit of mist the rear fogs were on.

I read the manual but it baffles me (I am old), only had the car 3 weeks so...............how do the cornering fog lights work? :notme:

Must add, they are enabled so I am lead to believe. It was all in the sales blurb when I bought the car.

Excuse my ignorance.

When you're headlights are on, you're doing a slow speed and turn the wheel, that side fog should illuminate to light up the curb.

I think thats all there is to it mate

When there is any amount of fog, the following applies

x% will be lit up like Christmas trees, with every light their car has turned on.

y% will be appropriately lit for the conditions.

z% will have no lights on whatsoever.

The numbers are typically x=25, y=60, z=15 but shift slightly as conditions change.

What is always intriguing is the amount of people in the X category who, with all fog lights blazing (indicating that they think visibility has been severely reduced) then proceed to drive like an utter ****; speeding, tailgating etc.

My current favourite is.

Winter time, maybe frosty or rainy,

Basically Lighting up time,  morning or afternoon, going to work or heading home,

Sidelights and Dipped lights should be on.

So you see the lovely new Polo, Golf or some other VW coming towards you,  DRL's Only on to the front,

they go left or right, maybe enter a Roundabout, mini roundabout or wait to cross your lane,

but do not indicate,

so no orange indicator goes on,  all that happens is, 1 DRL goes out,  so there they sit maybe in the middle of the road,

total lighting is 1 DRL to the front until they do the maneuver, when it is done, and their steering is straight then they have 2 DRL's again.

Then there are all these Faulty lit Prestige Cars, one or other light not working,

then the car is still switching off lights or dimming them when the Indicator is or is not working.

What is it with Audi that so many Prestige cars have faulty lights,

surely there could be a warning comes up, have your car fixed within 24 hours or it will be disabled until recovered and repaired.

Yes I've sussed it now thanks. they do work.

Of course you never know sitting from the drivers seat if they are on, that's if you try to see them working in a well lit area as I did the other night. Stationary, indicators or steering full lock they switch on, headlights on of course.  Not sure about the usefulness of them though.

Good stuff.

I think some are better than others tbf.

You see many cars driving with no lights on at all these days as the instrument clocks on modern cars are illuminated 24/7 so they think they have lights on

Hmm

About half an hour ago i saw a lorry out of town, driving on just sidelights.

I thought they were supposed to know better

Cant see why people keep the rear fog on when somebodys following.

Because they're stupid....

Because they're stupid....

Thats that explained then ;) haha.

Never managed to get dazzled by front fogs in my life... although now I feel really inclined to drive round with mine on, just to upset the Victor Meldrew crew. Because I'm like that.

Very considerate of you mate.

I'll thank you with a prolonged blast of full beam as you approach.
