Pop said the... turbo!

Featured Replies

Was merrily on my way to overtake a couple of cars and then all of a sudden the car jolted as if someone hit the brakes... I pulled back into the traffic and feared the worst. As I was not too far from MK I phoned Unit 18 and Alistair agreed to have a look.

As I got closer, the smoke increased and the verdict was easy to make... turbo failure; the 2nd one to fail on the car already!

To be continued...

Mileage? How many miles had each turbo covered? Do you warm up and cool down? Drive hard or easy?

Personally i dont know if this helps in theory it should after long run i come to stop and let the car sit there for a good minute or two helps with carbonisation in the seals. I also dont boot car until after the first 5/10 minutes from cold start up.

1st turbo went (according to history) at around 110K, car is now on 125K. This is not the 1st turbo'd car I've had, so I know all about the importance of letting it idle after a run, and warming the engine up before even consider booting it...

Have only had the car for less than 2K miles and 2 months :(

Ouch.

Sorry to hear that.

Hearing of a lot of kaput turbos on PD130s recently.

You got warranty on it?

Bought it from a Brisky member, so no. We'll find out the finer details tomorrow when Unit 18 has inspected it...

Definitely not a pipe?

ouch 2 turbos in 2 months ownership.

Well, 1 turbo in my ownership; the previous owner replaced it as well... and no, it's definitely not a pipe. I wish!

Feel your pain Quniten

Unfortunately it does seem like a lottery with the KKK turbos.

my red car has pushed on through 126k on the original turbo and has been remapped for 80k of those.

my black car went pop at 48k and upon removing the dead turbo looked like it wasn't the first either.

I think it's just that time in the mk1 Fabia's life cycle.

Even the youngest cars are now 5 years old with the first ones pushing a decade.

That kind of age usually means a mileage north of 100k which seems to be the magic number where a majority of turbo's start to call it a day.

My Turbo is still plodding along at 184k

Steady away from cold but not excessively so - as for cool down = no. Pull up and switch off :giggle:

The Garrett GT1749 turbo is much stronger and more reliable - why didn't they fit this to the Fabia/Ibiza - it was fitted to the Golf/Leon/Toledo etc. I sold one on after it had done 184k, was in amazing condition still.

I also share your pain with a blown turbo, but was probably my own doing :(

That's probably what it is. Glad to be getting rid of the Cordoba and pulling out of the turbo going pop lottery (it's currently got 111,000 miles on it!).

And fitted to the polo as well :) so, hopefully no turbo worries for me!

Maybe an oil feed issue if its only done 15k

Get a pd150 whacked on :)

x2!

Sorry to hear about your turbo(s) as above maybe get a Garret or see what Darkside have in stock. Break an egg, make an omelette!

What did you do to contribute?

Have not heard back yet from unit 18... more news tomorrow hopefully :(

Nearly 220k miles and still on its original turbo and dual mass flywheel, clutch changed once.

It's a taxi so gets pre mot checks regularly and services twice as often as it should.

Also gets a lot of preventative maintenance, gearbox oil changed for the sake of it not because the gears are crunching so 'worth a shot'

Thats some good miles fair play.

New turbo time... a little over £1K for a Garrett replacement (and all gubbins etc that go with it) as they do not like to replace it with the K03 again. Should be ready for me end of next week

Exact cause and issue will be diagnosed once they start the work and remove all the pipeworks etc, but it hints at a incorrect fitting by the previous garage (who was not a specialist and may not know the exact ins and outs of these turbos).

Price sounds about right for fitting as its quite a long job to do. I take it you mean KKK and not K03? k03's are on the 1.8T petrol lumps i believe?

Anyway, glad its at least being fixed. The Garret turbo will be rock solid and outlast the car :)

I thought K03 and KKK where the same :giggle:

I mean the Fabia OEM turbo obviously ;)
