Just had a measure up and the mounting points are roughly 30cm with the bonnet shut and you need an extended length of 56cm, based on the angle of the bonnet when supported on the prop strut. As the maximum stroke from a 30cm fully closed strut will probably be about 26cm or less (taking into account the fittings on each end and piston size internally etc) these seem to be the dimensions to look for: 56cm extended length +/-1cm with a 26cm stroke +/-1cm (2012 Octy).

Middle of the page, look at the fitting instructions.

Thanks, didn't spot it due to the name, Liftomat for engine hood.

Very smooth on so many levels. Well done & thanks

Do you have a kit of parts ? I can see this http://www.sgs-engineering.com/nl2396-volkswagen-golf-tailgate-strut

but what are the ball sockets called . Any VAG part nos?

Have a look at post 5 mate, I found the golf bonnet strut and 10mm ball adapters.

Skud,

Did you mount to the existing bonnet prop hole or onto the hinges via a plate mounted ball?

Some pictures I found of my Milotec damper.

the Milotec one seems interesting but also a bit of a pain to do if you need to undo the bonnet.

Better do that with a second person. I did it alone and it worked. Bit tricky, but if you do it slowly it will work without dealigning the bonnet.

I've found a bonnet strut that will give the 300mm closed length - Audi A3 97-03. It has a 200mm stroke and an extended length of 500mm. It is suitable if you want to use the same mounting points as the Milotec kit or as used in the video post but I'm uncertain about the slightly reduced bonnet angle vs using the existing stay and whether it will be strong enough to support the bonnet at this angle. Using the strut supplier listed above and getting the ball studs off e-bay the job can be done for about £25 so I suppose it isn't the end of the world if it doesn't work out, here goes.....

So, I'm going for it, not a substantial investment, might just work out .. However need help from you guys ...

I'm calling for a gas strut from MK5 golf and a M8 threaded ball extension 10mm from sgs engineering. Only thing I need to know now is which bracket will I need to fit the Octavia's engine bay ? Here's a link of the list of available brackets ( I'm thinking the 90deg one should probably do the trick).

Anyone ?

I'd say a 90 degree angle, probably best to try and work out the clearance you'll have though and how you're fitting it.

Scrap that, the video on page 1 seems the best, do that!

PZ, have a look at this range.

Fatbloke, Thanks for your research, I'd thought along the same lines. Be interested in the result and your observations (with photos?)

I think 2 x threaded ball extensions should do the trick having seen the video. A bracket might need extra drilling.

The items are on order, I'll fit and post obs and pics as soon as. If the fit is good and it does the job I plan to reinforce the bonnet bracket quite simply by sandwiching it between 2 90degree brackets.

Fatbloke, what strut did you order? Same as Skuds, a MK5 golf jobby?

Skud, did your strut come with the ball already attached at the top? Is the one at the bottom (and top??) a 10mm x M8 ball stud?

It's whatever the M5 Golf one is, I think off memory it is the M8 x 10mm, been a while since I fitted it so excuse the vagueness :hi:

Just to help those trying to source a non VAG strut the VAG one is 400 x 330 extension.

Where is your battery cover, or have you taken it off recently as your battery looks very clean to be without a cover

Received the strut today and did a trial fit. The strut is ideal and has the correct force to support the bonnet. The ball studs I purchased are these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111012024248?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 and is the correct thread to replace the bolt at the lower mount. However, mounting the stud in this way doesn't allow enough of an angle so I mounted the stud on a L shaped bracket with the stud horizontal. This seems to be the best set up and worked perfectly. This lower bracket does need to be quite strong though as the temporary bracket bent immediately. So to fabricating a lower bracket and upper reinforcing brackets.

Is there a suitable bracket from this range for the lower mounting? http://www.sgs-engin...l_stud_bracket/#

Would probably have to adapt the mounting face for a central single bolt fixing - would it be rigid enough?
