Any one has a number of how many 2.0 and how many 1.8 have failed, at least among forum members?

Scary stuff.

Interesting that the 1.8's with the chain issue have had oil problems just before they jumped and not like so many vrs' where they just... went!

On startup after being left to cool. E.g overnight.

not on mine. i was cruising on a dual carraigeway at about 70mph in top, about 20 mins into my journey. engine just stopped running and i coasted to a halt.

Edited to add some more detail:

My first vrs was an eary 2010 car, one of the first FL TSI vRS's - the car was only 2.5 yrs old but at 76k miles it was out of warranty when i had the failure. i had to make a contribution but most of the cost was picked up by skoda under goodwill - the car had a new engine which came will all new ancilliaries so i also ended up with a new turbo etc. Tensioner failure was the cause as far as i know. Dealer was fantastic and the car was only off the road for a total of two weeks, zero hassle and no quibbling.

I'd had a metallic rattle on cold start for a couple of months prior to the failure and reported it to the dealer but they couldn't recreate the problem andi thought it was prob just a rattly wastegate at the time. In hindsight i know now that this was the tensioner slackening off but at the time i didn't realise the significance - i think only one failure had been mentioned on the forum at that time and I hadn't made the connection..

I hope that the more information that is published on this and other sites the more likely it is that VAG/SUK will deal more honorably with victims.

As far as i can see Skoda DO appear to already be doing just that.   Mine was out of warranty but they still forked out for almost the full value of a brand new engine - sure it would have been nice to get a bunch of flowers and an argos voucher but tbh i was more than happy with the six grands worth of new engine and the 2 week turnaround.  :)

Had a scare tonight: turned over my engine and nothing happened...

...but I just simply hadn't left the key on the starter motor long enough to let it actually turn over though as my hand slipped off! :giggle:  That second turn had me raise an eyebrow though. :)

Octavia 1.8TSI registered 17/09/2009 Engine plate dated 24/08/2009.

4 SKODA services including 2 MOTs last one 27/08/2013.

4 new tyres and 2 dip beam bulbs (nothing else!)

10/10/13-exhaust management light appears, booked into Litecliffe Skoda/Pentraeth VW, Abergele. Earliest appointment 18/10/2013.

13/10/2013-drove 1 mile for the Sunday paper and car would not restart. Rescued by Skoda Assist  and left at above dealer who also do VW. 38700 miles.

17/10/2013- it is confirmed that timing chain tensioner has failed and they had done a Golf with the same engine with the same fault the previous week. £2500 for a new engine with discount but contact SkodaUK for compensation payment.

18/10/2013-details taken by SkodaUK.

21/10/2013-25/10/2013-couple of phone calls to check progress.

28/10/2013-voicemail stating no payment will be due at dealers!!

29/10/2013-call to SkodaUK who confirmed this. Called at dealers who are ordering engine 30/10/2013 to fit early next week.

06/11/2013-call to dealer, a slight delay on the order of the engine……courtesy car offered due to the delay.

08/11/2013-picked up VW  UP 1.O as a courtesy  car………60bhp, the power was endless!

12/11/2013-picked up car with the new engine, plate dated 23/06/2013.

Overall, I wish the fault had never occurred but it did and managed to stay calm until it was confirmed that the chain tensioner was at fault. Not having to pay anything was an added bonus for a car 13 months out of warranty.

Happy with the dealer and I am glad that I had a 4th service with them(the undertray put me off to do an oil change for the first time in my life!)

I have now collected my car from the dealer, Hughes at Farnham Common, and paid £399 as a contribution.

They have been fine throughout but it seems that the dealers are in the hands of SUK with regard to what offer is made to the customer.

SUK apparently only offered 50% contribution until my dealer pressed them for more as the vehicle had always been serviced with Hughes, I have owned 2 vrs and was in the process of ordering a new one at the time of the offer.

If one does not have a service record then it seems Sale of goods may be the only recourse.

This is, as far as I am aware, the second vehicle that Hughes have dealt with satisfactorily.

Nice to hear Nigel, I too was more than happy with Hughes (Aylesbury) they did say mine was the first one they had had in.... luckily for Skoda mine only needed oil valve/tensioner and chain

Off to get windows tinted this morning as I now have a little bit more trust in the car and want to start on some TLC to it like my 03 plate has

Phil

Has anyone had the tensioner updated to the correct revision and at what cost? Wondering if its worth getting mine checked and updated

Hi Gents,

I have seen/had a quote somewhere (either on the forum or actually from a dealer) - and it's about £600 - includes the tensioner and water pump and other stuff that gets worn out or needs replacement due to the procedure.

Cheaper than an engine replacement (unless you are lucky enough to get SUK to pay of course!!)

But havent updated ones also failed on here? (Im sure I read that in this thread)...

I haven't noticed any of the latest iteration (mk4 I think) -- but you would be in a very strong position to beat SUK up if the chain skipped AFTER they had changed the tensioner!!

Edited by DICKEAST

Not being funny, but the mk4 part is probably so new that it's just not long enough even if it was as reliable/unreliable as the other versions.

Why you cynic

I must say I'm tempted to agree, but I think my point:-

is still valid.

Work that you pay for is usually covered by two years warranty - the only question is if that would only cover the tensioner - or included any subsequent resulting damage to the engine. This also includes any that you contribute to - which is why it is worth contributing to an Engine Change - so that you then get two years warranty on the Engine change.

Yowsers. More expensive than a cambelt change! That would throw a spanner into my figures of derv vs petrol

Difference is diesel must have cambelt changed at set intervals. Changing the tensioner is a not a requirement , just precautionary if your worried about it. I have a tsi and whilst I would hate for this to happen to mine I have no intention of changing it. Some people will say this is the wrong decision...hopefully I won't regret it. Way I view it is given the amount of tsi engines in production worldwide in all vag products this failure is still small. Everyone posts on forums about things going wrong. Would put you off most makes of cars if you read all the forums.

I suspect that you are thinking about the 1.8T engine where the water pump is driven by the toothed cambelt.  The coolant pump on the 1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engines is integrated in a common housing with the temperature sensor and coolant thermostat.  That housing is attached to the cylinder block below the intake manifold.  A drive gear at the end of the balance shaft drives the coolant pump via a toothed belt.

I haven't seen a dealer quote for replacing the TSI engine tensioner - along with the timing chain and some associated other parts - but would expect the cost to be £750+.

Has anyone heard of a longlife conti cambelt break on a CR diesel ?

anyone know the part number for updated tensioner for 2.0 tsi

I suggest that you ring TPS and ask for the part number and price. That will get you the latest update.

In fact why don't I do that tomorrow...

So own up who hit the Answered button

P.S.  When did you amend your original reply?  ;)

Anyone know how much Skoda would charge to fit this? Is there anything else that would need replaced too if being on the safe side?
