Help with the MDI

Featured Replies

I must be a numpty. Despite reading the manual and fiddling with the options, I still have a km/hour readout on my speedo. Everything else is in miles, apart from this one line of display. Does anyone know how to change this to miles per hour?

Apologies for the picture quality. As you can see, range is in miles, then two lines below that is says 0 km/h. I stopped to take the picture!

Thanks

You can't officially but the country of the car can be changed to Australia and then you can have a large display of Mph but you lose the other info then.

It's all down to European law supposedly that you have to have a display of kmh as well as mph

Thanks. So what do I loose if I select Australia?

Can I do that myself?

Surely this is not a European law thing. I have four other cars and none of them show km anywhere?

You have to get someone to do it via VCDS-laptop connected to obd port.

It is Skoda/VAG's reading of european legislation.

UK Construction & Use Regulations requires that any vehicle has to display both MPH and KPH speeds. Most vehicles do this by having the KPH numbers in small figures inside the speedo, however VAG (and not just Skoda) supply many models with just the MPH shown on the speedo. Therefore the Maxidot/MFDS (not MDI) display shows the KPH figure.

As has been said you can change the setting to make the car Australian, but this cancels some other displays in the Maxidot, and some people have said that newer models have not accepted the change at all.

I cannot see why people have such a problem with the KPH display.

+ five eighths :giggle:

Nor me - both the Yeti and the B Class have the same display in km/h and I largely ignore it, just like I ignored the small km/h markings around the edge of other speedometers (until I went abroad, that is).

"this cancels some other displays in the Maxidot"

Really?

None lost on mine!

+1 I've not lost anything either.

Me neither, and you can change back at the tick of a box.

My car displays outside temp there all the time. Much more useful.

Nothing is lost from the display and anyone who wants to have a foreign, and mostly French, element to their display can quickly restore it.

Can't say I find it attractive to bow to Napoleon as I go along!

If there is something on the display I don't understand or don't want I ignore it! :hi:

I can't understand why it's necessary to have a duplicate display of speed, are they not sure which is correct?

I find the large digital display is much easier to read than having to actually look and see what number the needle is pointing to.

I find the large digital display is much easier to read than having to actually look and see what number the needle is pointing to.

...which is completely at odds with conventional wisdom, which says that you have to actual READ a digital display, but can get an impression of speed from where the needle pointing is without having to actually read it, so therefore can get more information from a glance. I have had cars with needles (numerous) and with a digital speedo (RX-8) and, TBH, I just got on with whatever I had. A lot of bikes now have digital speedos.

Meh.

Agree with your first sentence.

As already said, C& U Regulations state that a UK vehicle is required to show BOTH MPH and KPH. Because VAG did not stipulate to their supplier that both speeds had to be printed on the speedo they had to find another way of showing both speeds, and did it on the Maxidot display.

I find the large digital display is much easier to read than having to actually look and see what number the needle is pointing to.

Agreed. I use the KPH reading of 48 as my 30mph designation, etc.

Perhaps it's an "age" thing! :giggle:

I find it funny that, if you look on any of the forums about Tiguan's, which have exactly the same dash set up, hardly anyone ever raises this matter!! :wall:

Not surprising as they have already established, by buying a Tiguan, an inability to appreciate a better vehicle for less outlay and brand snobbery prevents them from appreciating it. Unsurprising therefore they don't post on this imperfection which we share.

But it isn't an imperfection!!

I know we will continue to disagree about the utility or desirability of a display of kph in the UK.

The imperfection is that we cannot choose the information on the central display. We should be able to decide what information and the format of the central digital display.

For those who want a metric display choose it-I prefer to keep it as an item for use when abroad.

You believe that a very small 48 kph is useful I prefer a full size mph figure since the analogue pointer, for reasons best known to VAG, does not have marker points on its MPH dial which coincide with our most important speed limits.

I don't maintain you are wrong, merely that your preferred display is not the one I'd prefer.

Not this old chestnut again. (How many times have we discussed this? -I've lost count)

Hits head against wall followed by poking eye with pencil.

I feel better now.

I agree Graham, us youngsters are perfectly happy with the arrangement we're given whereas 'old farts' like JCP can't cope. Where's my evidence he's an old fart you might ask? Just take a look at his profile picture/avatar/ID picture or whatever it's called on here.

Hi

I change mine all the time while travelling from home here in Belgium to the UK.

With the engine off, but the ignition on,go into your "set up menu" and you will find a square by the words "Travel Mode" if you have this square ticked your lights will adjust to driving on the opposite side of the road. Untick it should sort out your problem, hopefully, good luck. MarkL

Mark,

The discussion isn't about changing the headlights to "tourist" mode, but to the Maxidot display of KPH.

Down with down. Very British debate this. If you want a display only showing MPH....buy a Rover or a milk float !!! Apart from the UK, Bermuda, Liberia and America, everyone else works in Metric. The UK is a multinational country, there are many people who live in the UK who prefer (or have grown up with) this most universally used form of measurement and therefore may need/prefer it.

Our road signs give distances and speed limits in miles and MPH, what help do you suggest a very small digital KPH indicator may give to those who suffer the disadvantage of not understanding imperial measurements?

I'm afraid the problem here is that those who can only relate to meaurements directly related to the number of toes they have have persuaded themselves their preferred system is in some way better(a view they are entitled to)and wish it inflicted on those who disagree.
