Top selling SUV's for 2012

Featured Replies

Following on from this post I made in the General section there is now an SUV only list for 2012. The Yeti came 50th:

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/2013/03/23/world-full-year-2012-discover-the-top-60-best-selling-suvs/

I don't quite get it......... It's the best baby SUV out there as the awards show but they only managed to make 87,400 beasties and KIA managed to make and sell 387,142 Sportages?! I realise they sell these in the USA too (which add to the numbers of course) but heck that is a huge difference in sales! THREE HUNDRED thousand more Sportages sold!!!

But all in all I'd much rather drive something scarce to be honest than something as common as a Sportage or heaven forbid a 3-series BMW.

And there is your answer. The US market is more than 3 times the size of the UK market, so that alone pretty much accounts for the difference in sales.

It accounts for much else that we might not like much. It's why Jaguar and other saloons now look like American cars: they are ungainly when seen in Europe, but they look perfectly at home on the streets in California.

Yeh but you would be say that 9000 you drive a Yeti, it goes without saying lets look at the figures though....

All the SUV's below the yeti are sold in the states apart from the Q3 i think.

Couple are pretty borderline SUV at all.

I didn't even know they made a 4x4 Kia Soul?

The fastest growing car market is the far east; China obviously, but also South Korea and the rest of what were called the 'asian tiger' economies. Kia's local presence will help them sell in those markets. In the first 9 months of 2012 Kia sold about 350000 cars in South Korea alone (Hyundai sold nearly half a million)..

I see the ford kuga came 5th thats good i have just ordered a mk2 titanium x, in black after looking at all the other makes this seemed the best buy.

nice looking car and the other half like it.the dash and controls inside made my superb look quite dated when i got back in after the test drive

The Yeti came 50th:

I prefer it that way. I dont want the same car as my Neighbour...or if you live in South Korea...Neighbours !

I see the ford kuga came 5th thats good

I'm not convinced that high sales figures are good? Good luck with your Kuga, modern fords are well made and good vehicles -although I have chosen to order another Yeti, The first time I have ever considered a repeat purchase in 43 years driving.

have you tried the new kuga if not you should its a very nice place too be.

Maybe, but according to the Ford configurator I'd be looking at paying about £28k to match the equipment level of my Yeti L&K, which is several k cheaper!

That may be the case but the Kuga is in size from the class above. Officially the Yeti falls into the Nissan Puke/MINI Countryman class due it being so short. The Kuga is in the Tiguan/Honda CR-V class so should in theory cost more.

a mistake.

Let's not get hung up on high sales relating to anything else about how good the Yeti is.

We all know what the delays to get one built were like.

Skoda were building them as fast as they could IMO, with long delays for customers.

If you can't built them, you can't sell them.

I'm glad it's not common because I don't like having the same car as everyone else.

BUT Škoda also does ZERO advertising for the Yeti. And I'm sorry if there is demand for 200,000 Yetis a year then they can build another factory to satisfy this demand - which they would because they will make more money the more they sell. Why is there not a 200,000 a year demand? They don't promote the car at all... Chicken and egg alas.

But as per your last statement I prefer the status quo and to NOT see another Yeti for weeks on end!

BUT Škoda also does ZERO advertising for the Yeti. ....

Is this true? (of course it is - Johann is an honest chap!) I would confirm that personally I've only seen adverts for the Yeti for the Emergency Services.

There was an ad on TV for the Yeti last time in 2010 - the one with the Yeti creature chasing the family as they drove their Yeti. And the Yeti sponsored a crime show on C4 or something once for a season. Apart from that on the tv ZERO advertising. And in magazines? I can't remember a Yeti ad for at least 2 or even 3 years now. It's fine for their marketing budget for sure (it's zero) but heck it really does not sell cars.

EDIT: it was channel 5 and also in 2010: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/171316-just-saw-a-new-yeti-ad-on-tv/

Loads of billboard adverts for the Yeti here in France......but strangely hardly any Yeti on the roads.

Yes, on my frequent trips to France I have also seen much more advertising for the Yeti than in the UK, but fewer actual cars!

I think Clarkson and co. did all the advertising the Yeti needed on Top Gear.

I agree with driving a model which is not seen all over the place, I hope they keep the trend as is, and please, please don't start making Yeti's in Bl**dy China !!! (or if they do, just sell those in China )

I've just changed the air,oil and pollen (cabin)filters on the wife's Ibiza, and could not believe it when taking the filters out of the boxes festooned with VW AUDI logo's, to find stamped on the actual item, made in China.

Skoda Ireland ran this on TV last year when launchung the Urban and have run others too ove rpast three years

I'm still looking for Sienna Miller in the glove box, but at least I don't have Alan Carr rattling in there :giggle:

+1.

Well I certainly see a lot more Yeti's around than I did three years ago :-)

Thankfully the comparitive rariety of the Yeti is doing wonders for used values (at least I hope it still is, as ours goes up sale in a few weeks  )
