Lost oil temperature and heating

Featured Replies

I had done over 100 miles and then noticed my temperature going down in my skoda superb 2.0l 170bhp DSG. By the time I finished my journey I had no heating either. Any ideas please. I am supposed to be taking someone to the airport at 0400. So am concerned.

Check coolant levels first to see if you are losing any.

As Danny57 says, loss of coolant was the main cause of this problem.

Why when you noticed your problem starting did you not stop?

If you have lost coolant possibly the sensor in the expansion chamber is faulty, if you have lost enough coolant you might well have ruined your water pump.

Take vehicle to a Dealer ASAP.

I hope you did not do your trip without checking coolant and water pump/generator belt first.

`Spectrum`, I find your last sentence very interesting. Do you mean that you check those things every time you go on a 100 mile trip?

Personally, while I know how to check the coolant level, I wouldn't have a clue where this belt is situated or what I should be looking for if I did!

I did check the levels this morning before going off. They were fine. I did have a water pump go last year and the levels did drop substantially. As for Generator belt. Not a clue where I should look for that.

As levels were fine I did go to stansted this morning. Temperature got up to 75. But then dropped again to 58 by the time I got home. I do a lot of miles a year it's a 60 plate and I have done 223k in it. So know my car pretty well. And this has never happened before. Not even when the water pump went last year. Any other ideas. Or we saying main dealer on a bank holiday weekend :-(. Got no chance have I.

Sounds like a thermostat stuck open to me. All coolant is being diverted through the radiator, air temperatures are low and the engine is not getting a chance to heat up. Remember a diesel engine wastes less energy as heat than a petrol one, and therefore too much cooling can lead to the engine not achieving the 90 degrees or so that it should sit around. This was a very common fault on the Ford Duratorq tdci diesel fitted to Mk3 Mondeo's -(they had two thermostats and they would often both end up stuck open, leading to an engine running way too cool) - maybe a similar thing is happening with your car?

I agree that it looks like a thermostat problem.

Thanks for your help all. Much appreciated

No warning lights? Had it been loss of coolant you'd definitely have got one. But surprised you didn't get one anyway. Thought the super sensitive system would pick up a failure like this.
