MOT Failures

Featured Replies

Took my seven year old 70,000 mile V6 manual for it's MOT today and it's getting about the time when you kinda think that they just might find something nasty with a large bill attached, so that long wait now starts to become a bit more nervous.

But it sailed through fine, with no advisories at all ..... which got me thinking .....

Has anyone ever had a Superb fail an MOT for anything other than the normal "wear and tear" items like tyres or blown bulbs?

Normal wear and tear I suppose, but mine failed on the rear brake pads being below 1.5mm. Serves me right for not checking, but I was hoping to have left new discs and pads 'til the weather was a bit more amenable.

My old MK1 L&K now my son's failed on cv boots.

Yeah CV boots several times. Could be worse I guess though.

My 02 V6 diesel usually runs about 150-200 worth of repairs each MOT. Suspension arms, track rod ends, that sort of stuff. That said, the steering rack needed to be replaced once, and that wasn't cheap, but that wasn't at MOT time - it was just when we were buying our house. :(

Overall I've no real complaints, it's no more expensive in repairs than my previous passats. It does have a tendancy to eat tyres mind you, perhaps something to do with heavy right foot driving.

They seem pretty good and rust doesn't seem to an issue.

I fitted front mudflaps to mine last week, which only involves undoing four screws on the plastic guard, but while I was in there, I pulled the plastic out to see what was behind it. Was quite shocked at how much crud had got behind the guard and was sitting on a ledge at the bottom of the wing.

But, I was really impressed after cleaning it off to see that there was no rust at all, and the ledge looked bright and shiny as if galvanised?

A quick cover up with some Waxoyl hopefully prolonged it for a good few years yet.

In 7 years / 123k miles only failed once on CV boots. Can't be bad!

In 6 years / 190,000 miles no failures, 1 advisory on front brake pads.

Track rod end boots - due to garage not attaching them correctly when they changed the track rods... not the car's fault really!

Apart from that no failures.

Half of what I test fails.

Half of what I test fails.

what's the top five failures, John? Bushes, emissions, some **** who doesn't check the bulbs beforehand?

Not even an oil pump?

I know it is not an mot item.
