entry level nilfisk pressure washer. look at my poor alloys :(

Featured Replies

How close where you holding the lance to the alloys.

What wheel cleaner do you use ??

That shouldn't normally happen.

Probably decaying anyway. Just highlighted an underlying problem is all.

When My car goes in the dealers are Instructed " Do not wash my car "

They use a pressure washer and what looks like Industrial Strength Truck Wash . It'll remove anything

think you're right. prev owner kurbed them and generally treated the wheels as a way to know when to stop when parallel parking. think the washer just took off the loose paint. looks crap now though. anyone know if I could respray with the tyres on? thought maybe taking off, letting air out and then putting a mask between rim and tyre?

I know it sounds a bit steptoe and son, but I have a list of stuff to do and cash is short. I hope you would agree that tyres, shocks and brakes take priority on scuffed alloys.

what colour looks good with race blue. seen some chrome spray, quite like the idea of chrome shiny colour alloys, or matt colours, like dary grey. black is too much for me....

even if the diy lasts six months until I can get a pro job. I just think plastidip won't do the mileage I throw at it...

Used a Nilfisk this morning did not even get all the dirt off the alloys let alone do anything like that.

Perhaps the wheel has been poorly refurbished in the past. You can indeed spray the wheel with tyre on, but it will end up a slightly different shade to the rest.

If money is tight, buy a silver touch up kit and paint over the damage and then laquer over the top. It will not look perfect, but will be a million times better than what you have now. Then when money is better get the wheel refurbished properly.

Jet washer shouldn't do that. I jet mine every week and they look as good as new.

Seriously, get them powder coated.

I got all 4 of mine done in black for £280,which included tyres off and on with rebalancing.

Finish is spot on, and you can have any colour you want!

No need to remove tyres. Get some stiff card, about 350gsm cut into 5" squares and insert along tyre bead overlapping the previous one. No masking, no over spray, sorted.

Just get an old bed sheet and put on the inner alloy to stop over spray on the inner alloy and a rim of masking tape near the face on the inside.

Get a good powder coating and that will protect them much better.

As soon as you start to Kerb the wheels and expose the underlying metals you are open to all sorts of problems.

I does look like the alloy is already irroding, think that's the word alloy rusting.

did you use the dirt blaster lance on the alloys ? Jet washer doesnt normally do this must have been starting to peel and avery little and the force of the water has got under and fetched it off

There's no way a pokey little consumer-level pressure washer is going to strip paint from an alloy wheel unless something is wrong to begin with.

For what it's worth, Mike Brewer showed how to re-paint a wheel without taking the tyre off on his new show Wheeler Dealers Trading Up. It's the third episode, from Sweden.

Get a cheap pack of cards and place them around the rim overlapping slightly.

I wonder if they have had a poor refurb in the past and this has taken the paint off?

this is exactly whats happened, i have the entry level PW too never had issue.

you will probably find the expensive jet washers will take paint off as it will be much higher pressure than standard jet washers

Powder coating would be best as has already been said. If you are going to DIY it I have seen masking kits on ebay. Essentially pre cut templates that fit between the tyre and rim to help mask the tyre. They do most wheel sizes and its much quicker than cutting paper and trying to stick it down masking tape!

I had a similar problem to you on a BMW. Once the paint was damaged damp seemed to get between the paint and alloy, the jet wash just accelerated the process lifting the paint off.

Somebody did a cheap refurb thread on here . I think it was pasty boy. Have a search or pm him.
